This last week has been the first opportunity I've had in three months to pick up my brushes, and I've missed it!
I've been doing a lot of reading about the Haitian Revolution recently, and thought it would make a good painting subject. I have some of the Trent miniatures on order, but needed a painting fix fast, so here's a quick and dirty conversion of a Boot Hill mini I've had in the pile for some time.

The dress style is possibly a teensy bit ahead of time, but I've tried to adapt to the 1790s by lengthening his coat and widening his lapels. The mini originally carried a shotgun, now replaced by a pistol. On the hat is a revolutionary rosette.

He looks a bit dressy for a revolting slave, so I've decided that in fact he's a gen de couleur - a free black. When the French Revolution took places, a delegation of free blacks and mulattos went to Paris and said 'Liberté, egalité and fraternité? Yes, we'll have some of that please...'

Superb conversion, I really like what you have done with him and a great paint job ;D
Incidentally the Trent Miniatures figures were also sculpted by Matt Bickley, so he should blend in very well.

excellent springs to mind...really well done sir

Nice conversion and painting? Have you ever listened to the Napoleon Podcast? They did a three-part talk on the revolution in Haiti a while back. http://napoleon.thepodcastnetwork.com/2010/07/23/the-napoleon-bonaparte-podcast-55-nicholas-stark-on-napoleon-and-haiti-part-one/ (http://napoleon.thepodcastnetwork.com/2010/07/23/the-napoleon-bonaparte-podcast-55-nicholas-stark-on-napoleon-and-haiti-part-one/)

That's some damn fine work, excellent converting and a beautiful paintjob. :-*
One wee thing, I would have had to hollow his hat out a bit more while I had the tools out. No way his head's gonna fit in that tiny hole!

Trying to build up a Haitian revolution army myself, and this figure is simply fantastic. Great job Oxiana!
If only we could persuade Matt to tell us how many figures he made for Trent.
Nick has already let me know there's a lot more in some of the ranges than the random 8 in each blister.

Wow! :o :o :o
I am working on the same thing. I was happy to see that the Haiti troops from Trent miniatures, unlike the other packs, has loose heads which makes conversions easier.

Great work!

Nice coincidence. I discovered these a few days ago and have downloaded them. I've got a long train trip next week, so I'll listen then. I read the article he wrote on his blog about the Haitian revolution and didn't entirely agree with with some of his conclusions, so it'll be interesting to see how he expands on things on the audio—I think there are about five hours' worth!
