Inspired by a recent thread on Dropship Horizon (http://dropshiphorizon.blogspot.com/2011/07/extraterrestrial-life-in-15mm-and.html) about what an alien race could or should look like I tried to create a 15mm alien from green stuff. Never having sculpted before I found this a bit more challenging than I thought it would be, so I have even more respect for those top sculptors creating our minis.
This is a work in progress that I started last night and I need to wait for the green stuff to set before tidying the figure up. The gun especially is needing work. I would love to hear your feedback, good or bad, and especially need advice on working in small detail. I have a few more picks on my blog at http://eclipsingbinaries15mm.blogspot.com/2011/08/first-attempt-at-sculpting.html

Actually looks very original and quite unique, I am liking it, would certainly make do for a native of some far flung planet to savagely decimate, or be decimated by. Reminds me of those programmes where they'd imagine these strange worlds, explain why they thought an alien world would be like that etc, with the strangest of creatures you could think of. I wouldn't mind trying a hand at sculpting. I need some 20mm aliens and there are no such specific ranges of that genre out there!

What a loverly little gent. Make a nice addition to my collection of Alien Mercs.

Unfortunately I have no intention of getting these into production. I wouldn't even know where to start. I may try and make some more, though after slicing into my finger this morning while working on this beast I have been put off slightly >:( :'(
Next job is to paint this guy. I'll post pics when he/she/it is done (After a bit of research I discovered that snails are hermaphrodites and both male and female). I've decided to call the race the Vitrinid. It's weapon is going to change a lot, and look like the calcite spine snails can secrete. Hopefully more pics later today.

Finished my Alien today, got it painted and based, and have uploaded pics on to my blog.
I'm reasonably happy with the end result. Not 100% sure I've painted it to my best. I wouldn't like to have to do too many more of them - I doubt the next would look anything like that one - but I may give it a go.
Here's the finished figure. Please leave feedback on how it looks, especially if you think it could have been improved.

This is one super cool concept and good putty work. I like this guy a lot.

Wow. I would love to have these made and in a variety of poses too!

Thanks Dan. I've no idea if this would be castable, and I've no idea how I'd go about finding out.
I'm also not happy with the head on this. I don't like the mouth and the eyes just look stuck on. I have sketches that I'd worked to but the finished alien looks completely different. I think at some point I'll make another with a different head style.

Started a new creature, this one insectoid. More pics of this and another sculpting project on my blog...

Nice stuff. I don't think the first guys eyes look stuck on. Think it's cool.

Great stuff - the marvelous thing about epoxy clays like Green Stuff and or Milliput is that when dry it can be drilled, sanded and carved etc. Thus a large amount of further detail can be added to the initial basic form. The opportunities for conversion are also endless and indeed this can be the best place to start, especially as it adheres to other materials like wood and metal so well, any beginners out there should perhaps start with pouches and the like. There are many resources available on-line giving tips on using Green Stuff and the like to make miniatures - for more see for example:

http://www.paintingclinic.com/clinic/guestarticles/sculpting.htm
For a really helpful handbook, even for experienced model makers see:

Keep up the sculpting... Would love to see more...

Those are really great figures colin_baillie. Too bad you don't plan to produce them. I'm sure there are some folks around here that can lend advise on what can or can't be cast. I am also just as certain if these where don in a manner that could be cast, someone would be happy to buy them and reproduction rights off of you.

He looks like he’s going to be interesting.
I already started following your blog a few weeks back, because I really like what you’re doing with your 15mm stuff. For some reason I can’t leave comments on blogs, so I’ve not commented on any of your blog posts, but I've enjoyed reading them.
