Title: Battle of Mons, 1914
Post by: dominic on 10 November 2007, 09:25:21 AM
I was just reading an account of the Battle of Mons, the first clash between British and German troops in WW1.  It seems to offer some interesting small unit actions for early WW1 - like the defence of a bridge against advancing Germans, the lone British MG against hordes of Germans (for which 2 VCs were awarded) and the "Miracle of Mons" or "Angel of Mons" which offers some interesting possibilities!

Yes, a fascinating part of the war, and a thrilling story. I must admit that I am more drawn to this period of the war than industrial slaughter amongst mud, blood and gas of later on. It still has some vestige of humanity left to it, somehow.

Some would say one of the British Army's finest hours (Though I would say that First Ypres was the BEF's greatest feat, an even more hopelessly uneven fight, yet one where they hardly gave an inch, and were destroyed as a force in the process, even though they succeeded in stopping the Germans).

Maybe when I'm done slugging it out between the Boche and Les Pantalons Rouges in Lorraine I'll get some BEF for my 1914 Germans to fight.

It would make a great scenario book for the Skirmish Campaign guys I know the book Polynikes is following is good but this could have so much in it.

The first phase of the Great War has had me interested since boyhood. Now with the availability of figures and the wide range of options I have taken the plunge.

My plan is to involve the Belgians as much as possible. I will include the possibility of what at the time was reported , even if it is stretching it a bit! I have started work on refugees and civilians , sone of which are armed.

My chosen scale is 28mm and for the BEF I am using Mutton Chop miniatures and Great War miniatures too. But first I have to finish my Tan Wars project.....
