Hi everyone,
First post after lurking for years!
I'm wanting to war game the early war Japanese incursions against the KNIL in the Dutch East Indies in 28mm. What I need is Dutch armour. Any idea who makes a 1/56 scale model of the following?:
Cardon-Lloyd M1931, M1934, or M1936 light tanks
Alvis Straussler AC3D armoured Car
Marmon-Herrington CTLS light tank
White M3 Scout Car
I know that someone makes the scout car (I just can't remember). I'm sure that no one makes the others, but does anyone know of any good proxies for these light tanks and the armoured car? Thanks for any help.

I've seen this one but it's a M1 scout car, http://www.brigadegames.com/M1-Scout-Car-with-4-Crew-156th_p_1893.html (http://www.brigadegames.com/M1-Scout-Car-with-4-Crew-156th_p_1893.html)

Welcome to the LAF community.
Jeff of JTFM fame has the White Scout Car and you can purchase this from Brigade Games or from Jeff:

Interest is starting to pickup for this period so who knows what may happen in the future.
Cheers,

Perhaps you'll be better off doing this in 20mm? o_o
Just about everything's available really - all the vehicles and artillery pieces you'll ever need, as well as proper decals and Japanese paras.

No, I'm sticking with 28mm. I'll wait till someone makes them. Maybe by that time, I'll have convinced Helen to paint them for me. :D

Lots of photos of armour in the Dutch East Indies. May been of use or simply a frustration as few of these vehicles appear to be available although I did read some years back that a few Dutch used vehicles were available in resin, but usually in 20mm or 1/35, from Dutch modellers. Googling in Dutch might produce some results.

I've always wanted to game this area of the war. What figures are you using for the Dutch? Will you be scratchbuilding any Overvalwagens?
Please post some photos when you've painted some things! :D

Well, there are no KNIL troops available. So I will proxy them using Brigade Games Diggers with slouch hats. That's the closest I can think of in 28mm.
As for custom building overvalwagens from pre-existing trucks, that would be following the methods of the Dutch too. Sadly, I'm a poor scratch builder.

Do you know of these companies?
Tiger Miniatures do KNIL - although they are for the 1890s, and are rather poor figures. Might be something you can use there, though: http://tigerminiatures.co.uk/page5.htm
Perhaps more importantly, Outpost Wargames Services make 28mm WW2 Romanians, the uniform of which was almost identical to the Dutch. They're in helmets, but I think the KNIL wore that in combat more than the soft hat: http://www.outpostwargameservices.co.uk/

Hey Answer is 42,
Thanks for that. See, I was under the impression that the KNIL usually wore the slouch hat. Here is a nice photo of them, looking rather like the Romanians as you said:

The Outpost sculpting looks a little rough compared to the Mesoamerican and Inca ranges I have from them (are they 15mm?):

Maybe they paint up better. Thanks for the info.

Anytime! You might find this useful, too - it's a colour (colourised?) film of a KNIL parade, probably shot just before the war:

There are a fair few such videos on YouTube.
Edit: And just in case you need any more convincing that they wore helmets in combat:

Dammit, Answer is 42! I know you meant well, but now you are costing me money ;D. Well I guess the Diggers can go back to being ANZACs and I have to try the Outpost Romanians as KNIL. At least the Aussies and Kiwis will be happy (and the guys at Outpost). Looks like I'll need to add the fabric sun guard to the Outpost models to have them look like the Dutch in the photo.
I like the picture from Palembang. Unfortunately even my Japanese are wrong for that battle. I really need Japanese paratroopers. o_o
