If you're like me, a lazy bum with no particular concerns about the environment, may I suggest the Terracotta effect spray way of creating rust effects?
This product is used to spray various gardening items for a terracotta effect. The paint, beside the iron oxide colour, has a slightly grainy texture which makes it very suitable as rust. In Sweden it can be found at Clas Ohlsson, I am sure there are equivalents in your country to.
I apply this over a black base coat and top off with a few moderate spurts of a another can of Terracotta spray containing a redder nuance. This method is particularly suitable for large items or if you want to undercoat a whole object in rust, like when you employ the Maskol peel-off method (described in other threads).
I am currently using this method for a tugboat, which paining I will be posting about shortly. Previous to that I have used it for a LPL armoured school bus.

Hmmm.. schoolgirls in bowlers and miniskirts... with guns... :)
Actually, spraypaints with some texture can be used for many purposes, I think. If a white one was available, it would be good for snow/frost effects on terrain/structures.

You know, when I read this I thought another calamity had befallen your tug lol
Glad to see this isn't the case :)
Great little tip there and I think we have Clas Ohlsson shop over here now (they seem to have taken the place of Woolworths, at least in Kingston anyway).
cheers

First IKEA, then Clas Ohlsson. The Swedes are taking over the world.... :o

I've used a red/brown Hammerite (a little ironic maybe?) metal primer for exactly the same effect. If you base the model in the spray then spray it with hairspray add salt to the places you want rust then paint the final layer of paint. Once it's dry take a toothbrush and brush off the salt you get a truly fantastic rust effect. It leaves the paint a little bubbled around the rust and you get a great random rust effect showing through under the final paint layer.
Unfortunately I don't have any photos of anything I've done with it to show it off. But Fichtenfoo has a great tutorial here:

I, for one, welcome our new nordic Overlords and -ladies.

lol
But as for topic, that does look very effective, if a bit unwieldy if you only want to do spots - but if you have a whole car rusting in a lot or something, it will certainly produce a more even effect than my preferred method of rust-tone acrylic and quartz sand. Have to try it when I get back to working on my Fallout stuff.

So I've heard. It's not a bad thing you know, they supply me with a lot of stuff for my hobby needs.

That's the other way of doing it. There has been at least a couple of threads about both the Maskol and hairspray/salt methods.

Never been in yet but I think that will change at the weekend :D

I had forgotten those legs... ::)
I shall have to see if I can find some of that stuff here in my little duck-pond. Should come in handy for both pulp (remote farm machinery/stills and the likes), and post apocalyptic (nearly everything).
I take it, that the second, more red-ish colour could be stippled/stricken on with a fairly large old brush, too?

Surely they can. Some people like to top off their rust-jobs with a smidgen of cadmium orange to. Don't think you'll find that in a can.

Hammers, Biltema has oxide red aswell, i think that one works rather nicely :)

Thanks for the great tip.
Will have to look for something like it here in the U.S.
Westfalia Chris, did you paint those four figures in the photo?
They look so lifelike. lol

Yeah they sort of remind me of someone too, can't quite place them though ;)

I saw a guy doing the do with jam instead of hairspray. Worked well! I think the jam holds the salt on easier....

Aw, come on... the poses are awful, and the proportions! Look at the guy to the left! :D
