Title: Examples of painting "negative" painting (light base, dark highlights)?
Post by: Watery Graves on 07 September 2011, 04:52:05 AM
I have a ghost figure I'd like to paint as if it were lit from within, and I thought it might work to reverse the normal method of highlighting--brightest in the deepest crevices, darker as you go out, darkest at the tips and edges. I'm having a little trouble picturing just how this would look, though--before I start, can anyone point me to photos of miniatures done this way? I've searched around but had no luck.

Games Workshops' Balrogs - because they're fire-demons, they're glowing near their core and dark at the 'edges'. This should take you to the page - http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1080185

I have seen this done for ghosts or spirits too but have no way of google-fu-ing the pictures I'm afraid, can't even remember where I saw them. Heresy-online possibly.

I paint glowing coals in this way, but I'm not sure how it will work for ghosts.

Maybe look up some sample ghosts on CMON or somewhere similar?

Thanks! The balrog is helpful.

I did hunt through the CMON and dakkadakka galleries, but didn't find anything done that way. I have a vague memory of seeing (or maybe just seeing a post about) this kind of thing, but I can't seem to find any actual pictures.

I guess I'll just give it a go and see how it looks. Thanks again!`

This (http://www.coolminiornot.com/97099?browseid=123430) is perhaps a little in the vein you are looking for.

I was really looking for a picture of a Confrontation banshee painted somewhat similarly, though not as glowing, but I cannot find it, so the gargoyle above will have to do.

Privateer Press's in-house guys have a couple examples that might help too.

Feral Geist (http://privateerpress.com/hordes/gallery/minions/solos/feralgeist)
Skarath (http://privateerpress.com/hordes/gallery/minions/solos/dahlia-hallyr-skarath) (I think this is supposed to be a phantom worm or something? Maybe he's just "glowy")
Ravagore (http://privateerpress.com/hordes/gallery/legion-of-everblight/warbeasts/ravagore) and/or Stingers (http://privateerpress.com/hordes/gallery/legion-of-everblight/warbeasts/stinger) (partials)
