Today I picked up a beautiful 18-wheeler and folded wings bi-plane set (the plane is carried on a 16-wheel trailer behind the cab) at the swap meet. It appears to be about 1:43 to 1:48 scale. It was produced by the Hess Oil Company in 2002. The cab of the truck has a divided windshield and there are other features that make it appear less than modern. Is anyone familiar with this truck and plane combination in terms of what period or model year the truck represents. I didn't get the box it came in and there were no details printed on the bottom of the truck other than Amerada Hess 2002. Thanks for the help. Richard

Haven't a clue what the truck is but here's a picture of the box. It reminds me a bit of an early Mack (late 40's - 60's) but that's just an impression.

archangel1, that's it. The windshield, fenders, roof horns and headlights make me think you are right about the time period. It would be interesting to know if it is a pure creation of the Hess folks or an actual truck. Thanks for writing. Richard

Don't know for sure but White and Diamond built some similar looking prime movers over the years. You're probably talking 1950s -60s though.

Etranger or archangel1 or whomever, the pilot figure in the bi-plane is wearing very pre-W.W II head-gear. I understand that it is not clear that the Hess company is producing authentic vehicle reproductions, but would a pilot in the 50's or 60's be wearing that type of head-gear? I'm thinking that given its an open cockpit (a throwback to an earlier time) maybe a pilot of such a plane in the 50's or 60's might wear the earlier head-gear for fun rather than practical reasons. Is that too much of a stretch or is it more likely that this links the truck and plane to an earlier period? Just spitballing ideas... Richard

Marine, at present I have no plans. I didn't know the Hess line of vehicles existed until I saw this one at the swap meet last Sunday morning. But at $8 it was too nice not to buy in the hope that an idea will come along. While I didn't get the box, the truck and plane are in beautiful condition. Richard

You'll still see the odd pilot wearing similar headwear today, particularly in open cockpit biplanes. There are still plenty of Tiger Moths (a 30s design) flying today. The 'plane looks 20s-30s but the truck looks post war to me.
