Title: Gesso – which brand, which consistency?

With winter's coming I won't be able to go out side and use spray primer. I was thinking about using Gesso to prime the figures instead. The problem, though, is that the local Craft store only carry  Liquitex "Super Heavy" Gesso. Would this work for priming the figures or is it too thick? What brand and what "consistency" would you recommend?

As a gesso proponent in general, and a Liquitex proponent in particular, I don't think I'd recomment their Super Heavy gesso.  It's meant for thick application and sculptural or textural work.  You apply it heavily, and it stays in the form that you apply it.  You want ordinary gesso which which snuggle right down in a thin, even layer even if applied thickly.  The current Liquitex packaging is either "Gesso" if white or "Colored Gesso" if otherwise.  I use black, gray, and white.

If a craft store can obtain Liquitex Super Heavy gesso, which is sort of a niche product, surely they can order ordinary gesso from the same supplier.  Good luck!

if you can get this (http://www.choiceful.com/ebay/image/56965.jpg) in the USA it's bestest primer ever.

waterbased, quickdrying, virtually odourless, a little bit goes a long long way, no more chips, actually stronger than enmel primers (yes, really, I was bloody amazed when I started using it) apply briskly and thinly with a flat headed paintbrush.
