Title: LAF pirate battle royal
Post by: Captain Blood on 23 September 2011, 10:28:16 PM
Today, Malamute, Slient Invader, Jimbibbly and myself assembled chez Malamute, to try out a pirate game ahead of the BLAM later this autumn, which may well feature a large pirate extravaganza...

Twas a quiet day along the wharves in the little Caribbean port of Peurto San Antonio Del Mar (Br.)

The merchants were trading and the whores were whoring...
No, I don't know why there's a bloke playing the flute on a roof either...

In the town square, the British garrison (commanded Capt. B. Blood, huzzah) are on parade beneath a sweltering sun...

Up on the rooftops, the gun battery keeps a weather eye seawards, harr harr... And just as well as it turns out...

For all of a sudden, the harbour is teeming with boatloads, nay shiploads, of bloodthirsty scallywags... Like these rogues, from the crew of Sharp-eyed Steve...

But there's no honour amongst thieves alas... No sooner had two of the pirate brigs pulled alongside each other than they were at it, hammer and tongs... Silent Invaders round shot whistling harmlessly over the heads of Jimbibbly's second string crew, under the fearsome command of Gentleman Jim Crochet (I think that was his name... ) Whilst Gentleman Jim rather more successfully returned fire, raking his enemy's deck with a devastating storm of chainshot...

Meanwhile, further up the quay, more pirate scum teem ashore. This time, tis the crew of the despicable desperado, Fat Pete. The brave defenders of the town, including a party of jolly jack tars on shore leave (but handily armed to the teeth) scramble to the rooftops to pour fire and shot down into the invaders...

Sadly, this does not prevent Fat Pete and his gang of villains making steady headway up the jetty, especially as cannon balls from my defending battery scream uselessly overhead...  ::)

The brave soldiers of the garrison also take to the rooftops to try to drive off the swarming pirates with musketry. But, woe - oh woe - there are too many of them... But wait, what's this? Ah yes, on the far jetty, haply the villainous crews of Messrs S. Invader and J. Bibbly have fallen upon each other with cutlass and dagger... We might be in with a chance after all...

But alas, whilst townsfolk flee in all directions, Silent Invader's third gang of rapscallions, under the command of one 'Red-haired Roger' (yes, really) have made it ashore and scramble up an alleyway in pursuit of a pair of comely wenches they plan to carry off...

Oblivious of the enfilading fire from the rooftops...

Fat Pete having now attained the quayside proper, the brave bluejackets surge down from the rooftops and engage the rascals with pistol and cutlass in a desparate hand to hand encounter...

Alas though, under Fat Pete's cousin, Purple Pete (yes, all Malamute's pirates were called Pete) the next wave of Dread Pirate Malamute's hairy cutthroats seethe along the jetty towards the quay, forcing our gallant tars to abandon the unequal struggle and make a, erm.. tactical withdrawal (having already dispatched several of the dogs)...

Meanwhile, over on the far jetty, the rival pirate gangs are still hacking lumps out of each other, as Jimbibbly's crew lead by Camp Freddie (actually, it turned out 'Camp Frederica', since the figure was a girl in a large pink coat) set upon Silent Invader's crew lead by head case and hard man 'Madman McTaggart'...

Right... there will now be a short intermission, while I sort out some more pics...

No doubt some of the other fellows will be along with their pics (and their sides of the story) in due course...

Back with part two in a wee while...

Post by: Captain Blood on 23 September 2011, 11:04:23 PM
I thank'ee lads...
Ah yes.. Now where was I...

Red Haired Roger, having swarmed up the alley, manages to apprehend the wenches and drive off the townsmen...

When, lo, the merry jack tars, fresh from their bloody melee with Fat Pete, run round the corner and run straight into Red Haired Roger, about his fiendish business...

Well, what's a sailor to do? Needless to say, our brave British tars plunge into another fray with a vengeance...

Meanwhile, Purple Pete (yes, that's him in the purple hat AT THE BACK) 'encourages' his crew along the quayside...

Under the very guns of the Redcoats... Who pour down musketry through the awnings into the foolish pirates...

Meanwhile, Madman McTaggart (that's him in the middle, without any hair) is beset by enemies, as Camp Freddie has at him with her cutlass...

And finally, having dispatched the tiresome head case, she (or is it he) leads her  party of murderers aboard the Madman's barque, to clear it of the rest of the scurvy crew, and seize her as a prize, har harr!

Meanwhile, at the top of the alley, another fearsome fight is in train, as the gallant tars attempt to free the wenches from Red Haired Roger and his gang...

As Red Haired Roger is chewing Royal Naval steel, his ship meanwhile, is being seized by another of Malamute's 'Pete' gangs... That'll learn him...

Yes, that means Dread Pirate SI has lost both his ships in exchange for a pair of wenches...
Ooops. Wait a minuite... Overwhelmed by the ferocity of the jack tars, Red Haired Roger is slain and his men flee... The girls have escaped as well...

Back at the other jetty, Fat Pete and his crew are fighting a desperate rearguard action against the Redcoats, who have come down from the rooftops to give the rascals a taste of British steel...

Sadly, this does not prevent Fate Pete loading huge quantities of booty aboard his flagship - since the Redcoats are temporarily diverted by having so many other pirates running round waiting to be shot...

Meanwhile, Malamute sails off with Silent Invader's other stolen ship - leaving behind a wounded Israel hands, rowing, on his own, one measly inch at a time, trying to catch up with his comrades, who have gone off without him. Whilst Jimbibbly's uber-captain, rejoicing in the name of Dandy Nathaniel, helpfully takes pot-shots at the solitary oarsman with a brace of pistols...

(Shortly afterwards, my Redcoats heroically shot both Israel and Dandy Nathaniel, thus putting the rascals out of their misery, and saving His Majesty the price of a length of stout rope, Huzzah!

And finally, the gallant Government forces regain full control of the town, just as Fat Pete sails off into the sunset, exchanging one final and futile broadside with Camp Freddie as the two vessels pass each other...

And that's how it was, by God, and ye may lay to that... I've probably missed a few bits... The post-mortem I shall leave to my fellow capn's.

Arrr.

There be two sides to this story.......

T’was a lovely sunny morn’ in Port Tony with the not-so-gentlefolk being busy about their business.

Pondering the hard day ahead, Luscious Lucy and Well-endowed Meg were trading titbits while Alaine Murraine, the Frenchie tavern keeper, put a little too much effort into polishing his jug.  But those boats in the distance….ye gods, there be pirates!

But pirates are a rum lot, there be no honour amongst ‘em.  Sharp-eyed Steve spied Cap’n Dandy Nathaniel reach a jetty first and, having been without female companionship for nearly two whole days, was determined to have first dibs. Orders were barked.  Flagpole Phil (try saying “I like yee Flagpole Phil” with a piratical accent) and his gun crew of cripples stood-to (well, not so much stood as balanced somewhat precariously on their peg legs) then opened fire on Cap’n Dandy’s vessel.  But Sharp-eyed Steve, being new to this malarkey, didn’t know his ball from his chain and so the round shot whistled overhead.  Ho hum.  Dandy took his revenge and as chain swept their deck, Sharp-eyed Steve’s gun crew was stumped as to what to do next.

Attempting to regain the initiative, Madman McTaggert and his fellow musketeers jumped down to the jetty and raced toward the quay.

Meanwhile, their ally Red-haired Roger had slipped into the harbour and docked.  With their blood up – and, frankly, good sense having been discarded the moment that their mate Sharp-eyed Steve opened up on Dandy – his men started lobbing grenades onto the quayside, wiping out Lucy and Meg.  T’was a mighty explosion and it be shameful that two such ‘andsome and generous womenfolk be finished off in such a way.

Being determined seamen, they wasted no time with regret and burst upon the quay.  Within moments, Red-haired Roger was taking his men up the alley.

It is the truth that on this day the harbour saw a lot of action.  There were three bands of pirates that came ashore. Two, being less adventurous sorts minded to exploit the exuberances of others, contented themselves with mere looting and fisticuffs at jetty and quayside.    But Red-haired Roger and his men, they set the pace they did. Of all the bands of pirates ashore that day, Red-haired Roger’s made the deepest thrust.

Back on the jetty, Madman McTaggert and his musketeers exerted a toll on Cap’n Dandy’s men but were now down to a few versus many.  Unable to make progress to the quay and with the cowering gun crew offering no support, he was true to his name: Mad’ wasn’t happy.  But he fought on.  And on.  And on.  Then died.

With Camp Freddie flouncing ahead of them, Dandy’s men stormed aboard Sharp-eyed Steve’s flagship.  The crew didn’t have a leg to stand on (a half-truth as they actually had one each) and were cut down, with Flagpole Phil being the last to fall.

Having thrust forward to the town square, Red-haired Roger and his men had seized themselves a couple of wenches.  The loss of a ship?  Bah!  It was wenches they wanted.  But being the only souls with the vigour, the courage, the enthusiasm, the downright stupidity to enter into the town, they had received unwelcome attention from its defenders.  Withdrawing back down the alley, Roger was somewhat surprised to see that Fat Pete’s men were aboard his sloop.

Why the surprise?  Well, Red-haired Roger and Fat Pete had a history and it wasn’t such a bad one.  Back in the day, when the taverns of Olde Londone Towne were their haunt, they’d met in business (Pete would sit perched on a barrel polishing shoes while Roger was his occasional client and accountant).  They’d become good friends and shared many a “pie and a pint”, as was the habit in Londone.  Trouble was Pete liked his pies.  He liked them a lot.  Roger had remarked that a single barrel no longer accommodated Pete’s bottom and he was a bit sensitive about it, considering the nickname “Two Barrels” to be unnecessarily offensive.

To a man, Sharp-eyed Steve’s crew were positive thinkers.  Yes, they’d lost their boats and most of their shipmates but they were at the tavern with a brace of wenches: happy days!  Then the wenches escaped.  Bugger.  Trapped on the quay, redcoats to the left of them, gunner and sailors to the right, they refused an opportunity to surrender and re-entered the fray.   With cutlass and axe blade flashing in the sunlight they fought almost to the end.

The last crewman standing was one Oirish Pete, an earthy sort, fond of wearing his emerald coloured shirt.  Pete lived to tell this tale.  Well, for a bit, ‘cos shortly after they ‘ung ‘im.

Gather round lads, break open the rum and I'll tell thee a tale of treachery, betrayal, back stabbing and more. Arhhhh ha harr!  Twas a fine day when the dread pirate Malachai Mute sent his trusted buccaneer brothers Fat Pete, Purple Pete and Pistol Pete on a raid of the infamos Puerto San Antonio Del Mar.

Unfortunately those salty sea dog rival pirates Sharp Eyed Steve and Dandy Nathanial had similar ideas. No love was lost between these scallywags and I knew they would turn on each other at the first opportunity, (Game note, not realising it would be the first round..!) But little did I know that the cruel Governor Blood had anticiapted our arrival and had laid on a reception committee for us. Now I likes a good fight like the next pirate, but I lost many a good hand that day, still I walked away with a prize in Sharp Eyed Steve's brig the Salty Sue and many barrels of rum.. Fifteen hands on a dead mans chest, Yo Yo, Ho Me hearties!

Now listen 'ere laddies whilst I tells you the true tale of what 'appened on the Spanish Main and lament for our good Capn Dandy Nathaniel who's tale I be telling...

Me and my lads 'ad been coming into hove for a grand piece of rape and pillage rest and relaxing and we was just coming into dock when what should 'appen but that foul dog Sharp-eyed Steve set upon us with abandon...

'Well', says Dandy to the boys 'We can't be 'aving that can we lads!'. 'NO!' was our reply so we set to the rascally sea dogs with chain and sent a good number down to the old place...

That didn't stop Steve so, thinks I, we'll 'ave to give 'im the cold steel and set 'im rightabouts...

'Har har' says Dandy, 'Get 'im boys and we'll loot the town enjoy our brief period of down-time before 'aving away with it'. It weren't an easy scuffle, by the powers, but we managed to see 'em all off to Davey Jones and pay their dues...

We 'ad their ship and what a sorry barky she is, leaking like a wet whore on Saints day sieve but then, the worst disaster befell our good band of men...

Our good Capn, Dandy Nathaniel caught a bullett from one of Sharp-eyed Steve's foul dogs just as he was willing to talk parley with the rest of Steve's crew and offer them a place with us. As damned as fine a man as ever there was, cut down in cold blood and in 'is prime.

Well there was nought else to do 'part from take what booty souvenirs we could and high tale it back to the briney...

But even as we was leaving, the rogue Fat Pete decided to have a pop at us...

But good fortune was smiling down on us and Fat Pete got in the way of 'is marksman and ne'er a shot came close.

That be the truth of it me buckos and you may lay me to that  ;)

Excellent work all round. Gotta love those Foundry Pirates, and the FR English are very good too. (I've got a pile of WF WSS that I plan to use for Black Powder, but am going to base up one pack for skirmish work).
Great ships too.
Well Done Cap'n.

I'll keep hawl every one of you swabs, here be the truth of it!

Is that the dry land version? I imagine that hurts a wee bit more than keel hawl! ;) :D

What REALLY makes this game pop, is, to my eye, the many bits and bobs covering the table.

Beautiful terrain: Yes. Beautiful minis: Yes. But the civilians, carts, barrels, etc. makes the board come alive!

So inspiring!!!!!

I can ID most of the miniatures but is this really a Front Rank miniature:

In case, can anyone direct me to the correct code on the FR website?

Many thanks!

Yes it is, but I can't remember the code, I just bought a selection of tricorn wearing figures of different nationalities, and painted them all up as redcoats. So he's probably a French or Spanish figure or something  :)

Fantastic report(s), tho' no one will ever figure out which one is the correct rendition of what happened on that day!! Truth-stretchers and the sort will only ever tell it the way they can to sound the more victorious. Harr Harr!!

Well done, and thanks for the tale....

It looks like you did red bases for the pirates and brown for the townfolks.
I like that.  That will cut down the confusion in HTH situations...
Nicely done all around!

The figures are from different collections, the Pirates from Captain Blood and the civilians from Silent Invader.

What you mean dead simple, highly playable, totally free rules, as opposed to big, fat, glossy, overly complex rulebooks at 50 quid a pop?

I wonder why?  ;)
