Hi Folks, I'm looking for some nice Foreign Legionnaires for my new colonial French based GASLIGHT army. I can't seem to find anything I like locally so I thought I's put some feelers out to see what's available out in the big wide world.
Cheers

Artizan has several references, some might help.

Askari Miniatures has a great range: http://www.askari-minis.com/ (http://www.askari-minis.com/)
They sell both late 1890s - early 1900s (Beu Geste types) and 1930s and there are painting guides on the site to help as well.
Castaway Arts here in Australia also make some http://www.castawayarts.com.au/ (http://www.castawayarts.com.au/)
Redoubt Miniatures in the UK also has a range: http://www.redoubtenterprises.com/shop/?page=shop/browse&category_id=417b8d1be00b06eff6f00c3729f541bd&ps_session=1bb43237e38469e5877982ab58f9cdeb (http://www.redoubtenterprises.com/shop/?page=shop/browse&category_id=417b8d1be00b06eff6f00c3729f541bd&ps_session=1bb43237e38469e5877982ab58f9cdeb)
I have a number of these minis, and I think the Askari Miniatures have some of the best minis for the period.
Also, have a gander at this site as it is chock full of FFL goodies: http://www.warflag.com/shadow/ (http://www.warflag.com/shadow/)

Since you're in Oz, be sure to check out Castaway Arts:

I've always had wonderful service from Castaway Arts, and the figures are very nice. ps - look for the Chasseurs d'Afrique on the Franco-Prussian war page!
Old Glory's Sons of the Desert is an extensive range for la Legion Etrangere:

And as already mentioned, Askari produces a great range of Legion, plus other French colonial troops. Al is a joy to order from!

Foundry have some nice ones.
I quite like the FFL filibusters in their Old West range, who are attired as for the Mexican adventure. They are real characterful figures. Apart from the occasional sombrero or shawl, they would suit for GASLIGHT, methinks.
I suspect Gringo 40 will produce them soon too, as they are just launching a new 28mm Maximillian Adventure range.

I think Artizan has the best followed by Askaris, Castaway, Old Glory and Redoubt.
Redoubt is quite large compared to the other ranges.

Hi Folks, thanks for the help.
I have a preference for the Foundry FFL filibusters but the price is pretty steep and I don't need the ones in sombreros.
Any ideas on how the Old Glory paint up? I can get these easily but I saw them and I wasn't impressed. Having said that I painted up a few battalions of their Napoleonic French a few years ago. They didnt look great in bare metal but they painted up great.
Otherwise, I think I'll go for Artizan.

A lot of people don't like Old Glory figures, and I'll admit there are some lines that are not good. Having said that, the Sons of the desert FFL paint up nice. I painted some for my dad's colonial French force and like you I wasn't too impressed with them until they had some paint on them. I just checked and I don't have any pictures of them right now but I can get some pictures of them posted soon.

I have some of the Dixon French Foreign Legion figures from their Dahomey line. They painted up well.

And finally, an Old Glory FFL in between an Askari Zouave and Saphis

Like I said before, I think if you put some time into them then they dont look bad at all. Plus you cant beet the price. I have also mix match some Askari French Officers in with my FFL.
Hope this helps,
Justin

Justin,
Thanks for the pics. I can see there are better out there but they do come up nice with some paint on them. So my decision is made - Old Glory.
Thanks for all the help folks.

I think they (the miniatures and paint jobs) look great and serve the Legion well!
