Title: Hinterland Leibhusaren company
Post by: Dr Mathias on 27 September 2011, 11:04:25 PM
Hello,
I've finally manged to complete the Hinterland figures in my possession, at least until the next group arrives in a couple days :)

I've already posted pics of the Husarenwagens in another thread.

Wonderful little army.  Great concept, excellent painting, clever conversions on the tanks.  All around winner.

Oh, my...  :o

I need to get some of those cake wagons at some point, I think... The muster works extremely well with the Hussar-theme, I say!

I'm picking up a box of WF Shock Troops tonight (along with a huge pile of zombies), and some of those are actually meant for a future WWWII project for which I'll also employ some of those nice hussars, along with some Pulp Figures. Come time, come time...  :)

That is a great army :-* :-* :-*
Very imaginative.
Where did you manage to get five sets of components for the tanks?
Does it not need some heavy support though, big guns?

WOW!!! Those look great!
I might have to steal this idea  :)
Just wondering, what colors did you use for the black?  Mine always comes out looking grey or dark of space black with no highlights.
Again, those look awesome!

Thanks for the comments all, it feels good to complete a force and then show it off to people that appreciate VSF and the the aesthetic of the period. One of my co-workers saw the carriages and said they were 'cute'  :-X. I've never been one to post pictures on forums, but participation in the LPL made me kind of miss it.

To those that suggested heavy support and aero- definitely on the big picture plan, although the hussarettes probably wont get much more attention other than cavalry when it becomes available, as I picture them as a rapid strike/scouting/harassment army. Actually, who am I kidding... I'll buy whatever Hinterland puts out :)

The upcoming and highly anticipated sailors will probably get land and aero contraptions, and maybe a quick fire field gun.

You make me want to completely redo my force to copy yours...

That's funny, I've been looking at yours and thinking I needed to use some of your ideas to add some VSF weaponry and riding creatures to the ladies!

Just wondering, what colors did you use for the black?  Mine always comes out looking grey or dark of space black with no highlights.

I tried something totally new on these- I airbrushed the black (a thin mix of india ink, a drop or two of blue ink, and black acrylic) over a gray primer. I never use black primer as I think it really dulls the overall mini, even if it is overall going to be black anyway. I highlight using a dark gray (GW Adeptus Battlegray I think?) followed by a Battlegray/Astronomican gray mix. Then a wash with Badab Black, followed by a slight highlighting of edges. IMO it helps to use a black and a gray that is slightly toned blue to avoid a 'plain gray' dullness. These were the first figures I ever basecoated with an airbrush and I'm kicking myself for not trying it sooner. It didn't impart any special effects (I was in fact hoping it would be slightly transparent, allowing the gray primer to peek through), but I find it really tedious and boring to basecoat... it is my least favorite stage of the process. In effect I reserved 'pure black' for the places that need it- underside of belts, deep crevices in folds, etc.

Normally I would prime gray and base with a thinned black, that allows folds to show through as dark gray, followed by highlighting. To tell the truth every time I sit down to paint I have a different approach... sometimes I use washes, sometimes not... its a pain if I want to match figures I painted a year ago :P

Thanks again guys, I appreciate the comments.

I love this army!  Disagreeing with what an earlier contributor said, I think the most effective conversions are among the group of lieutenants.  I especially love the one aiming the pistol while resting her hand on the hilt of her sword.  I know where the parts came from, but I can't figure out how you put them together.   :)

As for the next releases; whenever my caster can complete the job.  He's had them for at least two months now, but apparently the heat and humidity of summer prevented him from working on them.   :(

Now that Mancha has released the Hinterland automaton, I can reveal some images :)

Here's the final version of the concept art I provided. There was quite a bit of alteration and fine tuning in the early stages, and it was a lot of fun developing this figure. I think he'll be versatile. The separate head will be great for people that want to personalize their merciless army of robots.

I've set myself the goal of finishing everything I have primed and prepped before the end of the year. I've painted quite a lot of things over the last two months, from an astonishing array of subjects. Some of the figures were primed a couple years ago and were awaiting attention. One of those was the miniature of Tatiana Romanov in her honorary regimental uniform, from Hinterland Miniatures.

Also, I think I neglected to post this relevant photo here, although it was on my blog.

I've never even used them in a game! Criminal, isn't it?

I have long been a fan of Paul Hicks' Hinterland figures and yours are by far some of the best I've seen. I use them for VSF, but a AVBCW seems to be very popular too. If you really have no use for them, I'd gladly relieve you of your guilt. Please send them to me and I will put them to good use!  lol

Lovely work  :)

My own Hinterland ladies (and not painted by me I have to admit) are currently involved in some VSF battling, using TMWWBK (The Men Who Would Be King) rules by Osprey, with some slight additions and quirks included. Good rules that provide a handy toolkit to design scenarios and situations within your own VSF narrative. (I really must get myself sorted, and start a blog on all my stuff!)
