Title: Anglo-Zulu War 1879 in 15mm
Post by: Jon Suth on October 09, 2011, 04:00:22 PM
Finally getting to grips with the Anglo-Zulu War collection in 15mm.  I've built up all the Chelmsford and Dunsford columns for the first invasion, together with the whole Zulu army (comprising of 13 regiments).  The Zulu regiments range from 50/60 figures to 450 figures strong.  This is one of the new periods we're offering for the 2012 season.

First up the two Natal Native Contingent regiments.  One has three battalions, the other has two.  One regiment was attached to Chelmsford, the other to Durnsford.

Oh, my, but is this something to see.  I thought I had lots of cattle - but wow!  (Actually, I have a lot more than what is in your photo but mine are divided up into different groupings: 48 longhorns, 24 african cattle - but I plan to use them together when appropriate since they are quite similar in many ways.  I also have a couple of beef herds, a couple of dairy herds, some brahmins, and highland hairys.)  And the wagon park, very cool.  And one regiment of 450 figures?  Holy Assegai, Bat Man!  Even my megalomania doesn't stretch that far.  And I have an insane number of figures, all in 15 mm.

You are going to have some wicked games with that collection of figures.  I will look more when I have more time.  Again, wow.

Cheers FifteensAway - years ago I printed off a Chris Ferree pair of army lists for Isandlwana and decided to go with that, hence the huge regiment.  There are lots more to finish off - mostly basing which I hate, but always seem to put that off until last for everything and then have a monster task to face.
I've found another 250 unpainted Zulus which I'll probably do as local tribesmen not attached to the main field force.  Have also got lots of Zulu odds and sods which I aim to cut off their bases and use as dead markers.

New additions, managed to get 250 Zulu skirmishers based, also the new Zulu CinC command group done.  Working through some British sundries, including the Natal Native Pioneers at the moment, more soon.

Quarter of my way through another 200 Zulus, Minifigs this time.  Have finished the basing of the Natal Native Pioneers and the British command groups, plus some other specials.

Not a bad week's worth of painting considering. Managed to get 200 Zulus done this week and another 8 Zulu command groups. Have found another 300 unpainted Zulus - will do 100 as skirmishers and the rest as local Zulu impis not attached to the main field army. Once done, just down the basing of another 6 or 7 regiments ranging from 60 figures to 180 figures. Still got half a dozen wagons to paint and need to finish off the bases of some of the irregular cavalry.
After that, need to focus on the kraals and making some escarpments.

Sir,

Might I suggest you start a blog to feature this collection and link to it from here?  Not to say you shouldn't keep posting here.  However, the sheer numbers of photos takes some time to load and I think this may be dissuading some people from spending an adequate amount of time admiring your fine work.

Also, who is the lucky group that gets to play with these with you?  Hope the group has lots and lots of hands to move these beauties around.  I'm lucky enough to be in a locale where getting a half dozen gamers is easy, getting 12-16 quite doable.  Currently working on a Convention game with space for 32 players and 6 game masters (pirates).

Back to the blog idea, I think with the blog you can better organize how you display this collection and then we can all enjoy it at our leisure - and enjoy it I do!

A good idea about the blog, my problem is I never seem to have the time to devote to it, I'm rubbish at updating things like that.  I do put a lot of the pictures (when the units are finished) onto the Wargame Holidays website.
We run the Wargame Holidays centre over in Crete (www.wargameholidays.com), gamers can come over and play with an ever increasing range of periods and games.
Would love to see what you're doing with the pirates, its next on the list.

It's only when you see them in one place that I realise the madness.  Did enjoy doing these, but very pleased its over.  I'll be playtesting the rules over the next few weeks, then they get packed up and shipped to Crete.  First real games in June or July next year.  Reckon I have enough Zulus for around 3-4 players and enough British for 2-3.  Planning to run mini-campaigns over two days.
