Don't know why, but there are already a few gladiator-themed topics floating around these days. Adding to the confusion, here's my take on the first of a few couples of gladiators from Crusader Miniatures (excellent range!).

Painted just for fun, they might appear in the odd game of Red Sand, Blue Sky. See more of them and a bit of background on my blog (http://lead-mountain.blogspot.com/2011/10/pollice-verso.html). Comments very welcome! :)

Great looking figures.
Many years ago had a gladiator campaign with friends.
Thanks for reminder of the fun we had.

Okay, it's been a while since I last posted something on this project. However, if you followed the APC so far you may have seen the latest additions to my collection of gladiators (spot them in the gallery (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?action=gallery;cat=57)). This recent revival came about by the appearance of the "ludus in a tin" approach here on the board. That got me really excited and so I bought this…

… to turn it into this:

And here it is with a bit more action going on.

Nothing fancy I could add to the great advice available on the LAF already.
I must say, I'm happy with this first trial. And since these pieces are dirt cheap, I might even get a 2.0 done.
If you're after some additional blurp, visitors to our blog (http://mountainsoflead.com/2013/06/12/incipiant-ludi/) are always very welcome! :)

Looks good to me and the figures are wonderful :-*
cheers

Boy, every time I see that "tin posts", I'm tempted to start building on my own one..Looking damn good!
-
That is really nice! :-* :-*

Great PJs and nice biscuit tin!

Brilliant MDM - I intend to use that Roman red ring around my arena as well. It will help with concealing the blood. ;)

Is that true? It sounds plausible although I alway thought the Romans were a rather blood thirsty lot and would appreciate the sight of the blood on the walls.

I have no idea if there is any truth to that - talking straight from my arse. :D
I have seen a lot of Roman models depicted with a red section of wall though - it certainly looks the part.
-
Impressive painting - the Crusader miniatures look quite horrible on their site. Your paintwork has made me reconsider them as an option.
-
Great work, Doc!
That is another lovely example of 'game in a tin'.
:-*
Kudos for your Ludus!

Thanks for the great response! Hopefully it inspires a few more lanistae out there to invest in a tin like fellow LAFers did it for me.

To be honest, I have no idea if and how actual arena walls were painted. Like Furt said, Romans preferred to paint the bottom of outer walls in red or brown which absorbs splashes of mud quite nicely, so you don't have to repaint it all the time. Obviously, my ragtag arena is owned by a tightwad who's avoiding additional cost for paint as hell.
Okay, honest, I was just too lazy to copy the extensive murals as, for example, seen in Connolly's account on Pompeii. Would be great, but maybe next time – if we get closer to the capitol. ;)

Just a teaser (hopefully of no offense ;)): with construction work finished, training has finally started. As I'm trying to get used to the rules (by fellow LAFer Furt), I scribbled down a few notes during one of the test matches. That's now up on the blog (http://mountainsoflead.com/2013/07/06/first-blood-on-the-sands/).

As you can see, that particular training saw my latest acquisitions locking horns. In case you've missed them on the APC, here's a wrap-up.
First addition to the team was a Thraex named Satornilos, he's said to be from Hispania (but who's to believe slave traders?).
Regularly Satornilos is facing Lascivus, a Murmillo from Egypt.

Thanks for watching everyone!

What a great AAR and so visually amazing. :-* :-* :-*
Never have 3 miniatures in a tin looked SO good!! This is my Nirvana right here...

Sweet! I've been keeping an eye on your thread for painting inspiration (hopefully starting my arena during the summer holidays). Out of interest, how did you make your Arena dice? I just used stickers on blank insert dice, but yours look like 'proper' dice - see through transfers? Or did you paint the symbols on?

Agreed - how did you pimp your dice?
-
Cheers, guys. :)
Regarding the dice: just label paper with symbols (colours reversed & resized) printed on, cut out and stuck on blank black dice.
-
Well, they look spiffing however simply you did it!
-
I have enjoyed reading your AAR!! Lovely painting jobs!! And the tin-arena is great!!
Love that octopus design on the murmillo's shield :o :o
-
First class reading and show as usual, Doc, hope to play with them soon!
-
Gorgeous work on those Crusader minis! I really like how you've dirtied them up a bit on their greaves, the bottoms of their shields, etc. Gives me plenty of ideas for how to spruce up my own gladiator minis.
Freehand on the shields is very impressive!
