Title: My Pirate Ships/WIP
Post by: War In 15MM on 22 October 2011, 09:08:57 PM
These three pirate ships obviously need a lot of work but I believe they will serve me well.  I purchased each at the swap meet.  I paid $10 the largest, $8 for the next largest and $5 for the smallest.  I believe they are all movie related toys from Disney.  The two smaller ships are versions of the Black Pearl.  The wooden sloop is one I recently purchased at the swap meet for $4; I added a tiller and cabin and converted a 25mm gunner to serve as the tillerman.

That's quite a fleet you've bought (and what great prices)!

Yep, a great start, and very good deals.

I think the bottom two large ships could serve as either warships, or armed merchants, while the top two are excellent, smaller pirate vessels.

I especially like the small wooden sloop.  I have a soft spot for those, since they were used so much by many a pirate.

I've got a few similar ships for 15mm gaming as well.  These are Black Pearl models too, and work very well with the 15mm scale Peter Pig pirates shown on the deck of one of the ships:

As you can see, I've removed the mast from one, to convert it to a Brig.

I've also got a nice Chinese Junk too, for journeys to World's End:

Mako, I've never seen the smaller (15mm compatible) Black Pearls.  They're great.  I'll start looking for them at the swap meet.  I have the Chinese junk and love it.  When I posted these pictures, I probably should have said that while I have had the two Black Pearls pictured above for a few years, it was the work of Old Coast and his Griffon version of the Black Pearl that inspired me to bring them out and begin planning their conversion for use with my 25mm/28mm pirates.  Thanks for writing and sharing those pictures.  Richard

They are very nice.

I bought a number of them locally, when I saw them in the stores.  I've never seen them again anywhere, even on eBay.

I have a few extras, if you are interested in them.  Sorry, can't sell them for the price you got for the others, but have some brand new ones for $20, which also includes 3 of the 28mm - 30mm crew figs, if you are interested in those.

Compared to many of the resin kits, and/or other models out there, with much less detail, I still think that's a pretty good deal, especially if you consider the wood texturing on the hull and decks (it's incredible for a plastic model).

I'm planning on converting some with different paintjobs, and/or other minor modifications, as well as possibly cutting a couple down a bit at the waterline, in order to make them look like they are heavily laden with goods, or treasure.

Mako, I appreciate the offer, but my pirate life is going to be limited to the 25mm/28mm.  I've kind of divided my world between military miniatures in 15mm/18mm and Pulp adventure in 25mm/28mm.   I picked up the Chinese junk because it was great looking, only a dollar, and I thought I might doing something with in terms of the Boxer Rebellion.  I have know idea what, but for a dollar it was just too good to pass up.  Actually it converted pretty nicely to a more normal looking civilian junk.  Richard

FifteensAway, you should know that on the military side my heart is pure.  I have just stocked up on the Blue Moon French and Indian War range of figures.  I have not lost my way completely.  Richard

Richard,

Look forward to seeing what you do with Blue Moon's figures for the French and Indian War.  Did you get the civilians and the villagers?  If so, I'm curious to know how they compare, sizewise, to other figures.  I have a very large collection of figures for the period but no native villagers.  I do have a good number of civilians but wouldn't mind adding more.  Most of mine are Essex and Freikorps but with lots of others tossed into the mix over the years.  Started my collection before Blue Moon discovered there is a 'proper' gaming scale.  ( o_o)

FifteensAway, I do have the Blue Moon FIW Indian villagers and colonial civilians.  I compared them with the pack of FIW French Line comd and they are perfect.  I also bought the Blue Moon war paint Indian villagers (for modification) and the pirate civilian pack and they are great size-wise as well.  Richard

I've also got the second ship in your pics.  I think it is miles better than many of the wargaming products out there, especially if you cut off the wheeled bottom section, make a few small modifications, and repaint it wargames-style.

You can see my one here:

Roly,

I didn't leave a comment on your blog but I am posting a link in mine to yours - mine is the one called Pirates of The Carob Bean Sea which you should be able to find here at LAF.  Our project is in early days but full steam ahead.  Some nice touches in your pirate setup.

Arteis, absolutely beautiful!  Thanks for sending the pictures.  I am definitely inspired to get this project going. Richard

No worries.

I initially started off with 15mm pirates and ships, since I couldn't afford the larger vessels, but now covet those too.

Looks like I will be a multi-scale gamer for pirates too.

What toy was this originally?  I have been looking for something like this.  I missed out on the 15mm size ones you show.  I saw a couple in a dollar store for $5 and passed.  Regrets.

Doomsdave, the ship pictured by Arteis is the same one I showed above (the second ship below the wooden one).  It's the Disney Black Pearl, and Arteis is right in saying that it is great with 28mm figures.  If I remember correctly its a radio controlled toy.  Should be available on ebay.  Arteis has cut the hull down.  I plan to do the same.  Richard
