Dear diary,
As some of you know I've been hooked on this weird war stuff,
(well obsessing really!).
Anyway, I suppose I want to get some ultra modern/parallel universe stuff in there too. I've had a few thoughts:
i) Tanhausser kinda way, (WWI never ended), Germany dabbling in the occult, world domination, technological terrors added with demonic and religious articifacts playing a part and no nazis (but nasty buggers none the less).
ii) WWII still ranges on into an alt present day. Nuclear power never fully harnessed for some reason, (i dunno periodic table one short) but other tech advances made on both sides. (Allowing use of command and conquer style hi tech weapons, telsas, gauss guns, lasguns mechs jets etc... mixed with conventional stuff).
iii) Neo earth, (kinda in a Rogue Trooper fashion) old habits die hard, the planet is split between Tuetonic Imperialists and the Free peoples of the sovereignty, (allied forces) (borrowing a little from well everwhere here, stay with me!). Mankind left the planet in pieces and found another one to contine the worlds war on.
So hi tech sci-fi mixed with nods/references back to the good old days of WWII on the first earth before they blew it up!
I suppose I've not the disposable funds to launch into a massive figure buying fest (and my wife would kill me as I have enough lead and plastic apparently) and would like to use as much as I have and I suppose make sure its use seems workable:
so...
pigiron kolony guys; mecha greatcoat yanks
GW steel legion; mecha greatcoat germans lt and heavy weapons teams.
I-Kore colonial shock marines; german super soldat
Kyromek striders german scout walkers
E4M powered armour troopers american powered armoured marines.
I know I want and need some westwind zombies and want to get some basic troops either SHS system WW or artizan/later WW B0B figures and do some head swops etc.
I know it's up to me totally but does what I'm thinking about sound like it could be doable?
Yours

Yes, it does.
Might I also recommend the Warzone trenchers? great figs IMO.
And Copplestone-Neo soviets and old GW Valhallans work really well for Russans.

Cheers o' fist of Khonshu ;), I do have the 80 plastic warzone mini pack kicking about somewhere, blood berrets are on order for a british para/commando feel the metal trenchers are just a little too static IMO and limited castings are now available.
I was looking at the copplestone soviets, interesting..... never liked the valhallans, until I did a few for a mate and added respirators, (a la cadians).
And ok which joker said back to the drawing board without quantifying their rationale! ;)
EDIT: If you do vote cheers, do me a favour and 'add some meat to the bones', like to hear your comments positive and negative.

I have been thinking about weird WW II for a while. I think I would go for a stalemate option. Western Allies get as far as the Rhine, Eastern allies as far as the Oder maybe. Central Germany becomes the domain of dark forces as Germany attempts to halt the Allied advances. Possible German insurrection against the use of the dark arts (Austria, being essentially a Catholic country declaring independance from the Reich and leading this with Rome's support).
Play it from 1944 and see where it ends up. Nuclear technology should possible, but would the Western Allies really have sanctioned its use in the West? (a racist argument I know, but in line with 40s thinking in my opinion). Plus think of all those corpses that could be zombiefied...

Very nice Tad Portly, idea like this alot.
My own thoughts were to keep 'shiva the destroyer of worlds' out of the equation, linked to the reasons why the German 'Empire' would head into the occult.
Unless of course the allies had it but were unwilling and unable to effectively utilise the bomb, (maybe linked to the occult practices of the Germans), the nuclear blast would generate enough raw power to open a rift in space and time that would mean a merging of the realms the material with the immaterial, chaos would ensue, this rent would be uncontrollable, (even the warlocks of the SS could not survive this hell on earth: human sacrifices, dogs and cats living together mass hysteria! lol) hence a stalemate in that respect.
This wouldn't stop other technologies being developed, the fall of Japan could still occur, the absorption of Japanese technological advances matching the germans occult advances move for move.
Yummy!!!
More I hunger for more!!!!

I could then include my ideas around that Gorehound nazi zombie film:
In the latter stages of the occult wars Himmler ordered the development of the V3 Ballongrausigkeiten ultimate sanction.
Where the V1 and V2 programmes delivered instant shock and terror. The V3 gyroscopically controlled Ballongrausigkeiten would be dropped over allied controlled territories to drift on the wind, pressure valves automatically begin to release the helium from the balloons at 2000 feet, slowing the descent and bringing their deadly cargo of undeath to the ground safely, a slowing drifting tide of infection and disease...swelling their ranks with the newly infected.
Alternatively, ground launching sites have been spotted, mobile holding pens and launch facilities, moved into areas of contested control, launched from the ground into dense urban areas, this is almost akin razing the ground, instead of ash and flame slash and burn, death and stench.... a literal no man's land..... an ultimate sanction.

Rogue Trooper for me, it was always my favourite 2000AD strip. More along modern lines of Blue and Grey but it does open the door for all possiblities.
I once played a game on PS2 called WW3 which was a play on extending WW1, it having never ended and it would suit your Colony and Warzone stuff, but I think more mordern figures would ably fit in with each district/country having their own technologies or basing them on your favourite period of history without too much trouble
e.g.
Germans - either WW2 or ww1 uniforms
Brits - either colonial or WW1 for my taste
French - Napoleonic style
Russians - Imperial or Soviet
US - I ould go rough riders or advance technology
the worlds your oyster

I think TadPortly's got it about right. Prolly the biggest difference from many "other" Weird War ideas, though, would be the absolute, utter and total lack of walkers- NONE WHATSOEVER... I just can't get the concept to fit.
I'd just go with adding many of the paper Panzers- the E-10, E-25, E-50, E-75 and E-100, variants of the Hetzer chassis and so on.

You should really have included "Colonel Marbles is a tosser" or are you now denying your origins?

Totally agree - I really can't match walkers with 40s technology. However, as a thought you could have Golems. No reason why they couldn't be metalic rather than made of clay. However, being of Jewish origin I would suggest Allied use rather than Nazi. But then again could the dark forces bind demons in a similar way?

I like the idea of walkers myself, from mechs through to AT-ST based stuff, I think quite naturally suspension of disbelief has to play a massive part in it too, (well you can have possessed SS officers and zombies but no to walkers! ;)) This is all good stuff though keep it coming.
Also....Warmachine Cryx scrap thralls will be used as the basis for Projekt X style genetically engineered abominations.

I prefer a more subtle take on the whole Weird War II thing, there would be powered armour suits (in the experimental stage), the search for ancient artifacts,V2 rockets and experimental aircraft and the resurgence of some European myths and legends. I've got some ideas I've just got to put them into practice!

And for the six miscreants who want me to go back to the drawing board, again please elaborate as your comments are of use.
Cheers

I voted Aardvark because, well...
Anyway.
Nukes
1. When it comes to nukes a few possibilities. Perhaps the Germans build but due to Operation Valkyrie working it is in the hands of the Junkers who aren't willing to use their weapons because if they do the allies will also.
2. Limited materials mean that its only sufficent for one or two strikes. Wipe a city or two off the map like in SoTR and continue.
3. Commando raids destroy Los Alamos, Heavy Water Plants or similar.
I always quite liked the Project X idea where all the super science exists in the real world, its just secret. So the armies don't know about it, only the highest leaders (and mabye Rooselvelt was 'struck down' not by age but by US Agents when he tried to expose the secret program to the US public...)
Alternatively there is the 'Werwolf' idea where a National Redoubt does exist and is packed full of Jerry goodies. The war drags on whilst the Western Allies and the Soviets stare menacingly at each other.
Or perhaps the Germans have lost but as a last gasp they release all their horrors and beasts meaning the Allies have to hunt them down and clear up Europe.
Maybe the Americans did get their way in 1943 for an invasion of Europe- which flops spectacuarly. The Normandy Panzers go to Kursk and lead to a draw. War continues.
A little seen idea if that the Germans are unsuccfessful in 1940. Fifth Column rumours are squashed, the attack at Arras is reinforced. The French join in and a new war version of WW1 begins with both sides resting in trenches and defensive networks. Now new weapons are needed to break the deadlock...
I can do this forever by the way.
Oh, Colonel Marbles is a tosser and the Rev is a gormless ginger beast. [/i][/u]

I am thinking along the lines of tannhauser for myself, so thats where i voted. with an extra thirty years of constant warfare, you can play fast and loose with your technology and weapons. You are less constrained by the real weapons and their variants of WWII, and thus your kolony mechamarines are more viable. Also, try these sci-fi prussians, obviously aimed at the Evil Empires SciFi game, but would make great Weird Great War models. Hey, i like the sound of that, Weird Great War, cool, or maybe the Great Weird War, WGW or GWW.
http://www.zinnfiguren-martin-hille.de/shop/show.php?main_kat=1&kategorie=6&nr=
Also, something i have been planning for a german troop type, is the stosstruppen. One of the unit types from tannhauser, the evil dude in the greatcoat with the wicked knife is a stosstruppen, some sort of demonically empowered stormtrooper. Using the kolony rebel head sprue here
http://www.pig-iron-productions.com/hd_1_window.htm
put them on late war germans like west winds berling or bust, and voila you have a unit of stosstruppen.

Guys,
This is all really great thanks so much for your imput.
The stalemate idea is nice, as is the possibility of the continuation of the great war. Occult wars and OSA are in. I think the neu earth (option III) can be laid to rest with the Rogue Trooper franchise, (but I have plans for a nort sniper and Rogue himself at a later stage, may be able to shoe horn them in).
So elements of option i & ii, just need to decide whether that's WWII with nazis or GWW with Imperial Germans.
Unless anyone ahs any other ideas?

Here is the storyline of my Battleground Weird War II. Let me know what you think.
The world as we when it ended at Midnight on January 1, 1945 when for 27 minutes every creature on Earth fell still. This included every human, animal, bird, fish and insect. This lapse in consciousness resulted in a massive and devastating extinction of most sea life. This calamity also killed off a large portion of the world’s birds as they plummeted to the ground. Hundreds of thousands of humans would suffer from this lapse in time when their aircraft crashed, surgical patients went unattended, car wrecks and every other possibility that 27 minutes of inactivity would cause. Those unharmed would awaken to a scene of total chaos. In addition to massive death to the world’s creatures, all electronic communications ceased never to be re-established causing the world to be in a complete and total information blackout. With no communication from loved ones, civilian and military leadership the world’s populace began to fear for the worst. And if these circumstances weren’t enough the world’s dead rose up and sought out the flesh of the living and consumed. Huge numbers of war dead rose and attacked any and all living mammals that could be found. Because of the massive casualties on the war fronts whole armies and cities were consumed in a supernatural feeding frenzy. Any control was replaced with chaos as people fled for their very lives from an unnatural predator that was next to impossible to kill. Other supernatural creatures were also witnessed across the globe. Creatures from all of Earth’s religions, myths, folklore and superstitions suddenly appeared and took root in those areas that had spawned them. Religious leaders across the globe decreed a biblical calamity was at hand and the already devastated world populations gave in to hopelessness and total terror at the thought of the ending of all. It is from this period that we find ourselves trying to survive in a world that has truly gone mad. This is the time of Weird War II…

Well that's one way to ensure everyone turns up to the party! ;) Ok so how in this carnage do the allies and axis continue to wage war...I'm curious?

Well it is up to you. I purposely made all the rules in a manner so that the player decides what is going to happen next. Basically up to 1/1/45 is historically accurate with the addition of comic book heroes, pulp heroes and a few supernatural beings but after 1/1/45 anything goes.
The storyline is up to you. This allows gamers to do what they want to do with their own motivations. It can be as bad as Road Warrior or a Earth who's populations have learned to deal with and accept their new lives as not always on the top of the food chain.
Maybe you choose to enslave a small town to work at a near by refinery so your platoon of Sherman tanks can get the fuel it needs to make it to the coast and help trying to obtain a ship that will take them back to the US. Maybe you decide use your panzergrenadiers to fortify and defend your home town from the undead, supernatural creatures and anyone else who would see it harmed. Maybe you are a madman with a General's ranks and you decide to continue to wage a war that has no meaning until all your fuel, food, ammo and men are used up. Or not, it's up to you.
I think allow the gamer to choose the degree of Hell that they are subject to helps for better gaming as you have a vested interest in winning and continuing your new mission on the table top.

Nice, loads of flexibility there so the decision is the gamers...have to look into this.

I must confess I surf Frothers most days, but I never got around to joining*, and always post under silly Frotherguest Nom-de-plumes.
Now you've got me. What's a WIP'er? That one's lost on me.
*Well, I did, but my memberships kept vanishing, so I gave up. Maybe they were trying to tell me something...

Frothers seem to be first with a lot of new miniature news so I go there a few times a week. I feel, however, that every thread quickly detoriorates along these lines:
"dogshagger245:A few well meaning words of critisism: Your insights in anatomy are f**ing rubbish, mate. Work on it."
"lleadpornaddict: Who asked for your f***ing opinion anyway, c**t. Thanks for the input."
The predictability of it gets a bit old. :-)

I get most of the Olleys Armies previews from Bob's posts on Frothers and then repost them on TGN. He tends to post there a lot more than he posts on his own site.
Tales of War and some other smaller European manufacturers also post there a lot.
