Finally painted a unit of roman auxilia I had bought eons ago... I think around 2003 or 2004. Like the way the have turned out!

I have finished my old basing grit. I am now using the new basing material from army painter but I am not 100% happy. Anyone has experiences with it?
Of course more pictures and some comments on my blog.

Looks pretty good mate.

very nice - what rules are you planning to use?

Thanks,
as I mentions in the blog the basic idea is to have them on a "generic" basing system. I like the 4x4cm ones because gave me two ranks for infantry (much better appearance). They are intended for DBA (one base one unit) impetus (two bases one unit) and clash of empires and crusader rules (variable size units). Can use them also for Lost Battles, even if the scenarios included end with pharsalus and recently me and Phil had a discussion on how much the rules can adapt to EIR romans and roman vs roman battles.
I have reached the conclusion that one rule does not fit all and every rule give me one or two points I like so prefer to have flexibilty. DBA requires small armies and can be useful if you have few figures. Impetus, I like Impetus but sometime in 28mm I like the more skirmish feel of other rules and the ability to change formations.

Good idea - they are also based just right for Hail Ceasar ;)

Forgot Hail Caesar... opted for Clash of Empire when they were both out due to Stuart very good explanations...
at the moment HC is on the back burner, like the idea but:
1) being in saving mode I prefer to hsill my shillings for wargames, miniatures and research books (plus there is Mitsuo Uchida performing Beethoven 5th Piano Concerto next month at the barbican...) rather than with the nth ancient ruleset.
2) I feel HC will be better for larger battles and I really cannot afford to buy large 28mm armies and to be quite honest I prefer smaller ones at the moment. I can paint them in reasonable times and do not "wander" around.

Yes, I like CoE too. With no re-rolls, I find units (and armies) can be quick fragile making for quick games. Even 2500 pt games seem to be over in a couple of hours, which make it great to both club nights and tournaments.
I haven't played HC yet, but am busy doing preparing a Sammy clan for a HC game at Salute next year.
Shame that I'm now a little too far away for the Barbican :(

Oh,
I will be nice to see the samurai game next year at salute, looking forwardo to it. I have opted to scale down my samurai to 15mm. With Peter Pig and Dixon (former 2 dragons) I think the market is well covered and the quality is good, plus it is more affordable both for terrain and prices.

We prefer the Peter Pig ones because of the built in sashimonos, our old Dixon figures were ok but the sashimonos were always falling off.
Also have a look at Museum Miniatures - they have some very nice samurai pieces (but bigger than both Dixon and Peter Pig, although not a problem if they are not in the same unit) including a very good palanquin and some pavises etc.

LBMS the best invention for 28mm painters! :-*
Thanks for the tip on the dixons.
