Title: BrushOff! 2011
Post by: LidlessEye on 01 November 2011, 07:33:07 PM
It's November, which means... time for another painting contest!  The rules remain the same: paint any one pack of Strange Aeons miniatures (yup, that includes singles like the Formless Thing or Godling - heck, painting a Godling may score you bonus points!) and send us a picture by November 30.  We'll pick our three favourites and hand out some prizes:

3rd Place - Miniature pack of your choice
2nd Place - Two miniature packs of your choice
1st Place - The Grand Prize: a top-secret yet-to-be-released monster kit

The grand prize kit will be previewed in a few weeks, and will not be available for purchase until Spring 2012.  You can be the first to have this hideous beast, but you'll have to impress us with your fancy brushwork to get your hands on it!  Pictures can be sent to contests@strange-aeons.ca, or posted on this thread.  JPG, GIF or PNG format are preferred, with a resolution no greater than 1024x768.  We'll also be adding all entries to our BrushOff! Gallery (http://www.strange-aeons.ca/photo/brushoff-2011/) as they come in.

Now, get painting!

Only one week down and three entrants already.  Keep them coming!

I should note, as we do have one individual with multiple entries, that you're welcome to submit as many painted packs as you like.  All entries will be posted to the gallery, but we'll select the one we feel represents your best effort to participate in the final competition.

I would like to join the competition, but I only have a Mad Scientist that came with one of the Shocking Tales of Madness and Mayhem books. The Mad Scientist is now part of the Madmen set, so I'm wondering if I can still enter the competition with only this model. If not, then better luck for me next time.

I'm afraid the technicalities have you this time Sir. A full pack is required...still time to wrangle up a pack thou... ;)

And when you see what the first place prize is... :o. At least I think it's pretty cool. Just finishing the painting on mine. Always the first thing I do once I get on out of the mold.

Pictures to follow...at some point...tentacles...eyes...so many eyes... ;D

I have ordered the formless spawn and fishmen pack 1 today, so if the postal services won't let me down, I might be able to enter as well! 8) The formless spawn does count as an official entry on it's own I presume?

EDIT: D'OH! Just noticed my question is already answered in the first post... :-X

Entries posted to the gallery - thanks gents!  And don't sell yourself short there Hombre.  I quite like your Formless Thing - understated yet effective.

Now, about that grand prize kit....

I guess we did a decent job of tapping into the group consciousness of the player base if you guys can successfully identify a model that never even had artwork from a heavily cropped photo!  :D

Here's the Dark Puppeteer in all his hideous glory, based on concept art created for us by comic artist Nat Jones.  I don't have the model here right now to measure precisely, but it stands over 6" / 15cm tall assembled, and includes the scenic base (with horrified agent) and clear acrylic post for mounting.  We'll be releasing this either next Spring or Summer, depending on how the schedule works out, so the contest winner will be getting one well in advance of public availability.

You don't know the half of it. The best part about it is that it bobbles! That is to say, when you move it around on the table it bobbles around on the rod and kinda...bobbles...I don't know how else to describe it...there are no human words to describe the horror!

So, get painting and you could win your very own...way before anyone else. A then you may experience the bobbling! The horrific bobbling!

 ???

Very nice model...definitely one that I'll buy. I especially love the base with the man squirming on the ground.

Nice.. is its brain in its mouth? how dose it eat? :o Oh and what will it cost?

When you can devour the minds of your victims telepathically, who really needs a mouth?  :P

The price isn't set yet, but based on the material costs you can probably expect it to be similar to the Crypt of Cthulhu ($30).

Two more entries arrived yesterday - the field of competitors is growing!

Oh I get it, so the mind in mouth is symbolic. :p

Am I the only one who sees the "mouth"  on the first picture, it looks small and sad. Like something from Spongebob Squarepants  lol Really awesome monster though!

Just sent in my submission at the end of the evening!

Sadly, my "Cultists III" pack didn't get finished, so Scrawny Ones it had to be!
I was thinking about sending in my Werewolf as well, but he's been done for almost a year now...didn't feel quite proper.

Wow, 28 entries this year!  That made for some tough choices sorting out our winners, but a victorious three have been sorted out of the pack:

In Third Place, LAF's own Jim Cockburn (fairoaks024), with some very spiffy looking Threshold Agents III
(http://www.strange-aeons.ca/photo/albums/brushoff-2011/j_cockburn_1.jpg)

Our Second Place finisher, Dana's especially demented looking Madmen
(http://www.strange-aeons.ca/photo/albums/brushoff-2011/dana_1.jpg)

And in First, winner of the Grand Prize Dark Puppeteer kit, with an argyle sweater that completely blew us away, Chris Smith's Threshold Agents II
(http://www.strange-aeons.ca/photo/albums/brushoff-2011/c_smith_1.jpg)

Thanks to everyone who entered.  This contest has been (in our minds, at least) a phenomenal success, and we'll be looking forward to running it again next November!

The pentagram bag, the glow effect and the sweater are all fantastic. Congrats to the winners  :)
