I am playing on rather silly table tops for years now due to the lack of space for a proper gaming table. My recent move allows me to make some new plans or make some old ones come true. Some may have noticed that I am rather keen on railway models. Hence I decided to put up a mobile and foldable layout that will be used as gaming table as well (or vice versa).
As there are already many different models I will make it as generic as I can. There will be Wild West trains running as well as British and German or even colonial railways. I plan to build the appropriate typical buildings and scenery to make the set ups believable, but that is still a long way.
All started with some Roco H0 gauge curved points that I cut down to make them look like narrow gauge track by removing every second sleeper and adding the cut away pieces to their outer ends.
I removed the manual switches from the ballasted track bed and adapted them to the ballastless points. I also soldered all rails together and added wiring to make the trains run electrically.
Then I gave the rails a basic chocolate brown matt enamel coat and a lighter brown one to the sleepers.
These were drybrushed light grey twice and the rails got a leather brown acrylic wash.

I bought some H0 scale ballast today to make some tests for proper track beds.
-
The rusting on the rails works well :)
How big is the table you are doing?
cheers
James
-
That's interesting! =) it's a great start!
-
How big is the table you are doing?
120x240cm, folds to 120x120cm. I´ll probably add a static grass mat to the back and paint the upside tarmac grey, that will let me get away with a three in one gaming table - desert, city and grass.
-
Ballast, yet unpainted, unweathered, unwashed. I still have to decide to leave it as it is. Narrow gauge trains don´t run so fast that they produce a lot of brake dust, hence brown wouldn´t be appropriate. Perhaps some black for oil and soot...
The board got raised edges that will allow some space for the tracks when folded:
Actually it isn´t 4ft to 8ft as stated before, but 1metre to 2metres... This means I have to cut away some of the track ends to make the radius fit to the curve.
The board to come:
-
Aha, this is interesting, especially since you are involved, I will surely follow your work here :)
-
I painted the boards with a thick layer of resin paint to protect the plywood from moisture. The watered white glue for making the ballast track bed didn´t affect it at all. I concealed the mechanisms for the points with some wooden planks cut from coffee stirrers and added some GW badab black wash to the tracks where oily engines come to stop and where the points are greased.
Now I am thinking of adding a turntable, but am not decided on how to start that.
-
The ballast is looking good :)
Are you going to include leaves on the track (the wrong sort lol ).
Would the turntable work as a separate element that could be attached to the run off track in picture three and four?
cheers
James

Would the turntable work as a separate element that could be attached to the run off track in picture three and four?
No James, he turntable will be installed on the center board. This is how I started:
First I bought a double sided copper plated resin sheet for electronics. It had to be 10 inches square.
Then I scratchbuilt an aid to make it circular.
I scraped off the copper from the center line to separate electric polarity.
Finally I soldered some H0 scale rails on it.
The longest tender engines fit tightly, but they fit.

Looks good 8)

I love the idea of combining model railroading and mini gaming, but have always been too busy to try. I will have to keep my on on this thread...
-
Looking very good - the engine is a fascinating example of the wargame mini aesthetic applied to model railways.
So is a model railway layout used for wargaming a choo-choo terrain?
Sorry.
-
Weathering effects (for both rails and engine) are really well made ! :o

After 2 years of doing nothing on it I finally managed to finish it within two weeks and can show the photos.
This shows the board sanded and soaked in white glue:

Well done!
-
:-* :-* that is fantastic Michi! with all those rail yards and engine sheds will you have enough space for figures and gun fights? :D
-
That's brilliant :-* 8) :-*
cheers
James
-
Now that's effort! I can't believe you really went and did it!
-
Super duper! :o :o :o
-

I suppose the board is big enough... :D You haven´t seen it in build up area version yet. 7 February will see the first old west game on it, I´ll take pictures and then you can decide. ;)
-
Bravo Michi, I was wondering when are you finally going to build a workable railway gaming table :) Glad to see you did it.
-
The question is, with the train moving, and figures on the train how are you going to solve the obvious rules issues :)
Should make for an interesting game 8)
cheers

Uber-cool (don't know how to put the umlaut!)
As a long time model railroader and gamer (much longer with the railroading), this is great. Unfortunately, I game in 15 mm and railroad in N scale and they are a bit far apart. I have been adding trains to 15 mm (non-functional). On the look out for best track source - have one to check out and will see if I've found my solution.
Look forward to seeing a game in place on your train board.
-
Hmmmm. what's the best size for 15mm? HO I imagine?
-
Fram - TT is closest at 1:120 scale with 15 mm being approximately that up to 1:100 for the larger figures (the 17 and 18 mm). Challenge is that scale is very hard to find outside of eastern Europe and danged expensive.
I have used N scale trains with my 15s in years past on the smaller is better theory - but that was ACW. Passable as a "scenic" element but not if you want anything on the one-to-one skirmish level.
RIght now Peter Pig is the best source I know of - wild west and I think the armored train is in the World War One range. Maybe QRF - Freikorps? I know they have (had?) track.
-
Fortunately it was purely a curiosity question on my part - 15mm is not my scale!

Nay, not totally right now. Since Germany is reunified again the former GDR is no longer considered to be eastern Europe. Actually TT was the most popular model railway scale over there and a lot of (east) German manufacturers provided their stuff to the Warszaw Pact neighbours. The scale seems to grow more popular than ever and is easily available from German retailers on the www. Google for Tillig and Auhagen for example...

Ok Michi... its Feb 10th, where are those pictures?! ;D
Cheers
Matt
-
Very cool.
Can't wait to see a Western game on it.
-
Lovely my friend,lovely :-*
-
Ok Michi... its Feb 10th, where are those pictures?! ;D
Matt, I´m very sorry. I have no pictures of the planned battle on it due to cancellation by two opponents. However the Table Terror Team played a game anyway:
What was planned was a monumental and epic Wild West shootout, that should have been played with the Brink of Battles rules as a test for that ruleset. The appointment had been made fix for weeks and Michi even managed to finish a structured gaming board in record time...
Find the AAR with photos here: http://tableterror.blogspot.de/2014/02/frankische-tabletop-feldherren-vs-table.html
-
Oh well. A fun time you had. Use the board bedtime you can. ;)
-
excellent
I guess it was but a matter of time before You did this.... :)
-
This is fantastic. I'm really looking forward to seeing a game on this board. :o

Thank you. Next appointment for a Brink of Battle test game on it is 14 March... ;)
-
I need rails for my WWII City-Game too.
Now I´m frightened! There is a lot of work waiting.... >:(

Here they are at last:
Table Terror Team and Franconian Tabletop Warlords finally met to play a test game with "Brink of Battle" rules. I set up an old west town for the skirmish. Two posses of eight gunmen and 500 points were prepared. Values of retainers were different, but leaders were equal. We concluded that we had great expectations due to the award winning credits of that game, but were a bit disappointed. However we had fun gaming at all!

It´s friday evening, therefore the railway lays dormant for the weekend.
Employees and citizens are all in the saloons, nobody else is seen in the streets.
The sheriff got news that some outlaws just entered town at the other end of tha main street.
He assembled his posse and got ready for a fight.

The outlaw leader is on the right in front of the barn door.
He will enter the barn with a fellow who will climb up to first floor.
Two riflemen will enter the engine shed on the left.
The four ladies will work their way along main street.

The boss has moved through the barn and takes cover behind a bakery.
His female companions assemble behind some barrels.

Meanwhile the first rifleman has made it through the engine shed into the open, but the deputies are already there!
The engines provie good hard cover for the deputies.
They even take position in the church.
A daredevil deputy moves along the railroad parallel to the main street and will be shot by the rifleman in the barn.
At this point we decided to end the game without a particular winner.
Outlaws managed to shock three deputies and kill one.
The sheriffs´ people shocked one outlaw.

Brilliant Michi! :-* Love it all!!!
-
Wonderful photos! Great job getting clear shots in such tight spaces!
Great table too!
-
Man oh man that is a sharp looking layout! Great AAR too.
-
Great looking game!
-
What a great table! Excelent photography for the AAR too!
-
Michi, You are a master of many trades, and furthermost the unparalleled master of railway on the tabletop, as You clearly show us again here! Plus combined with juicy poor girls who need a bit of textile sponsoring, and whatnot else - amazing game!
but You are also insane - a turntable in a western town? ;)
-
Go-Lee, that is a fancay lay-out.
Right purty Michi, the end of the wild west is dawning in your little part of the world. Civilisation has come in a roundabout way. ;)
-
Looking mighty fine there, Sir

Cracking stuff :-* 8)

Fantastic Michi! All the work you do is phenomenal!! :o :o :o
-
Stunning! :-*
-
Those victorian era shots look fantstic, great work and I can imagine it to be a hoot to game on. Very well done indeed :)
-
Awesome! :-*
-
That's really impressive, surprised a small roundy-roundy works as a wargaming table, must be all of the work you've put in to it.
-
Fantastic combination of games table and model railway, I'm soo envious.
Your wild west and Victorian set ups are both the bees knees.
-
Greetings
my, I wonder why I gave away our HO-Scale when we moved :-[
Darn, Michi. Fantastic work.
You don't happen to play now and then in the mighty City of Karlsruhe, the Capital-city of construction sites ?
Well done
