Title: Getting some serious wood
Post by: H.M.Stanley on 25 November 2011, 04:25:11 PM
[ahem]

Now my F&IW project has taken shape and i have enough figures painted for the moment [hint: GM - Settlers  :D], i need trees and lots of them for 28mm.

Suggestions gentlemen please for UK stockists and types?

Thanks

James

Phew  lol

I have a variety, but particularly like the Woodland Scenics ones, they bring out the old fashioned modeller in me.  :)

Yarp me too I tried the stick on bitty stuff but went for the carpet foliage to give a more layered tree effect, easier too but mine were for Brazil. Sadly all my big ones went in the bin to clear house :'( save 30 or so smallet ones though :D

Lowtardog, me too, I go for the big clumps - which tend to fall apart as I stick them on; must make some more up  ::)

Revford - thanks for that, added to my favourites now, I especially like their palm trees, not of much use round Lake George, so maybe I'd better get some pine trees instead  :D

Bulk bag of Woodland Scenics 2"-5" deciduous trees, topped up with a few tall ones. Check out my previous F&IW board build thread here...

I'd go for bags of the Woodland scenic ones. Good value for money.

The tree trunks plug into separate stumps. You could permanently mount the stumps onto some terrain bases. Then, with careful handling(impossible I hear you all cry), trees can be removed to allow the passage of troops.

You could try hairspray or matt varnish on the foliage after its on the tree armature to help prevent unwanted autumn/leaf drop. Havn't tried it myself but it may work.

We have experimented a lot the past weeks with different kinds of threes, and are using various methods. The best, is without doubt the seafoam with Noch leafes, or seafoam with for instance the armatures from Woodland Scenics is a nice combo as well, and I would still use the Noch leaves. The other threes only look good on a distance in my oppinion.

Cheap and come in different colors.

CD, twigs, pan scrubbers, paint, flock = the middle two:

Bit washed out with flash but you get the idea:

The evergreens are by Gaugemaster with CD bases and added flock.

Thanks fellas

I have to admit that i'm not a fan of the Woodland Scenics. I did a pack a while ago and found it a right royal pain in the derriere to get the clump foliage to stick to the tree and then stay on. Mind you, i did use No More Nails ...  lol

I was covered in the stuff by the time i was finished.

I may look at the plastic firs from the model tree shop. What do you reckon, 100mm in height minimum?

I've seen some nice large firs from Battlefront too

I've started a project for my trees along the lines of Silent Invader (very nice SI) and a few others, using CDs as the base. The ones (not nearly enough) I've done so far contain a single large tree (representing an area of woodland), others are intended to contain 2 or 3 smaller trees and in some cases 'clumps of birches', willows etc.

I find that representing woodland areas with groups of these CD based trees reduces the need to remove trees for access, and prevents me constantly knocking them over  ::)

Thanks Major.

CDs certainly eliminate knocking over.  I first tried individually based trees and one other consequence was that branches would sometimes catch on hands and clothes with the tree lifted skywards like some sort of helicopter extraction!

Captain Blood's terrain has the individual trees implanted into the baseboard foam which is another way - and a more aesthetically pleasing way - of dealing with this problem.

We put pins in the end of the tree trunks (just like with our palmtrees) since its much more pleaseing to the eye when the trees are "planted" on the gaming table, and it also yields the ability to move them around and replace them elsewhere if so desired.

I put mine on 30mm round discs as in jungles/forests I always assume it is wooded with clearings being mapped out with hills etc sort of the normal reverse where woods and forests are delineated with large bases.

Also note the foliage mat I used rather than the bleeding aweful clump material, a lot less hassle though makes for more layered flat canopy on branches

Strewth... those blokes have got no strides on  lol

The foliage mat seems to work well  :)

That sounds great for foam boards, especially as the idea of permanently planting trees on boards is a bit scary to me - storage nightmare.
