It is finally done! I am very happy with it. Check out the gallery on my site with all the pictures here:

:o
Incredible work. I love all the little touches like the tableware and such.
What are the flagstones outside made of, the grey ones? is it a sheet of textured plasticard or something else?
-
Tidy.
I might even venture a "tidy on a Friday" for this lovely piece.
-
That is a thing of beauty! Now if you'll just offer it for sale like you did the tramp steamer. :o
-
Have to agree - that really is very good!
-
Thanks guys, for the positive feedback, greatly appreciated :) Yeah, I really put some extra effort into this one. It is unlikely that I would sell it, because I actually built it for myself :)

Not textured plasticard, but textured insulation foam. Here is the procedure:

thanks again!

Now THAT is praise, indeed

I have read about but never tried foam texturing. What's its durability like? You know, wear and tear on the gaming board?

It depends on the piece really. If you have lots of fiddly bits that were glued on, they tend to get knocked off without too much effort. For example, the merlons on my Castle Guinness (http://www.blackbirdmedia.org/miniatures/?view=terrain&which=guinnessCastle&thumbs=1) have to be re-glued on a semi-regular basis:

However, the rest of the castle is very durable. It is really too light to damage itself all that easily. Also, if you have the foresight of mind to actually cut the merlons rught out of the original piece of foam then they are very sturdy. For example, on my Umbar model (http://www.blackbirdmedia.org/miniatures/?view=terrain&which=umbar&thumbs=1) the merlons were actually cut from and are part of the piece that makes up the wall. Actually, Umbar is entirely foam. It has been dropped more than a few times and I have yet to have to repair it... Not the castle anyway, those damn little signs (http://www.blackbirdmedia.org/miniatures/images/articles/umbarTerrain/signPostDetails.jpg) keep getting knocked off though...

For the stuff that is on the Pony though (the stones on the front there as well as the fire place and chimney) they will never be damaged. At least, not any worse than they would be if they were made of anything else.
Hope that helps. I may do a couple of articles on working with materials like foam core and insulation foam... But we'll see :)
Thanks again for the positive feedback guys.

Neldoreth, All you terrain looks very nice. I liked seeing the progress photos of the Prancing Pony on your website.
By the way do you coat your foam terrain pieces with any glue or such to protect them before painting? I have found that a thinned down coat of pva glue helps to resist damage to foam terrain like this.
-
WOW ! :o
Incredible amount of work. Really impressive.
-
Thanks again guys!
I don't actually coat my foam terrain... I find that glue tends to smooth over the details a bit too much. Basically, I just repair the stuff as I need to when it takes little bits of damage, which isn't all that often :)
Thanks again.

I really like it.

FANNNNTASIC!!!!

It depends on the piece really. If you have lots of fiddly bits that were glued on, they tend to get knocked off without too much effort.
Next time one of them falls of, try pinning it with two pins (toothpicks, matches, whatever) while glueing it back in place. I'll bet that will keep them in place!

So, being made of insulation foam it's tough enough to not have bases left as an impression? I mean, if you impress the texture with a rock, would a larger/heavy mini leave a ring?
Curious.
Looks great, btw!
