Title: The Top Ten Halflings of All Time!!!???
Post by: Hubbynz on 02 December 2011, 06:36:41 AM
Like me have you always wondered what the top ten halflings of all time actually are??

No, well I didn't think so but rest assured the answer of this timeless question is sitting on the edge of your mouse click.

I have written a small review of what I believe to be the top ten halflings ever sculpted on my blog

http://halflinghouse.blogspot.com/ (http://halflinghouse.blogspot.com/)

So please feel free to check it and let me know what you think by commenting or following the blog. There is more halfling info there than you can poke a chicken drumstick at such as numerous past post as well as links to good halfling resources and manufacturers.

Feel free to drop me a line if you have any ideas for further content.

Cheers

Excellent set of suggestions there.

Here's a halfling (fantasy football themed) my buddy got for me recently - it's is a specially cast tournament giveaway for the Madbowl Blood Bowl taking place in Madrid later this month.  Fantastic model - and looks fairly similar to Mr. Baconbreath although he's much larger.

http://www.talkfantasyfootball.org/download/file.php?id=1031

Here's a couple of extra FF style halflings that might never see production - one-off sculpts by Pedro Ramos who's making some of the best FF models at the moment.

http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/8487/mosaico.jpg

Only other suggestion I have is the Napopleon who's in the same set as the Elvis Black Hat Miniatures model.

I may well have to join White Knight in that statement as well.

I have a couple of really characterful Halfers in my collection, none of which I have gotten around to painting yet. (I intend to paint up a Mordheim warband soon, promise!)

A couple, and only one that I do have (still after the barmaid: hint, hint to anyone that has one to sell/trade  ;)), that I think are some of the best ever are the two female 'Flings that Citadel released in the late '80's as Stigwort Facebracket and Slackjaw on this link;
http://solegends.com/citjour86a/cj86ap26c11halflings-02.htm

There is also the Ratcatcher from the same period, no link at the moment.

Of course, any 'TOP 10' is subjective and you will never get two people to agree, but I believe that you may well have started a few good natured arguements!

Good topic!

Of course, when I said it, I meant I was going to release some new ones.  ;)

I agree those female ones are great and I could almost nominate the entire C11 halfling range for this. I spose I was going for the more iconic halflings that have made a impact on the hobby as individuals.

But hey no right or wrong answer

You have some SPLENDID looking Little Guys up there. I'm relieved you were the one that had to pick out the winner...it's nice to know someone is as enthusiastic about Hobbits/Halflings as I am about Goblins.
While not up to your work, this is my current favorite Short Fellow, Gazzola the Great:

He's a Heresy mini, if you don't recognize him.

I would buy some halflings but I'm a little short at the moment.  :D

You are a man after my own heart, joroas...you have my condolences.

Oh that is the first time I have seen those Goblin factory halflings painting as they don't list them on their website. They aren't to shabby and seem to paint up reasonably well but they aren't to great either. The Calvary look useful.

All these Halflings are good to very good but despite some great paint work (Helen's pictures, especially,) for some odd reason none of them make me want to rush out and buy them.   :(

I'd like some more Halfings to support my Dwarf with Allies army but so far the only ones I have are the (?) Custom Cast (or similar era) ones I bought in the 1970's/early 1980's.  Guess I am looking for the Holy Grail of Halflings to resemble the descriptions (or more likely my perceptions of the descriptions) from the LOTR trilogy.   :'(

Perhaps just a hint of unrequited perfectionism on my part?   ::)

Gracias,

Glenn

Edit:  Here's what I have and they are fairly close in size and appearance to my images.  http://www.stunties.com/wiki/index.php/Der_Kriegspielers_-_Fantastiques

I really dig those Pippin, Merry, Sam, Frodo and Bilbo Haflings from the 80s Citadel Lord of the Rings series. And, to be honest, I think they've done a great job on the haflings of the current Lord of the Rings series as well.

I've got them except for the pack in the middle (the one with the mounted halfling)  :(. So if you feel guilty about not painting them I can help you: just give them to me! At least I've managed to paint one of the halflings the last years... ;)

There is a great overview of halfling manufacturers from the Colonel Marbles Miniatures Masterworks site:

http://doc.frothersunite.com/minis/halflings.html (http://doc.frothersunite.com/minis/halflings.html)

And - after checking my collection of halflings I reckon that I don't have the Copplestone Castings halflings but those Mark Copplestone did a long time ago for Grenadier. But both ranges have so many similarities that it's quite clear that Mark resculpted his Grenadier sculpts for the second batch of his own miniatures; for example:

You have most my favorites there and the unreleased peg leg-hafling is probably my all time favorite. Close followed by C11s and Andy's (Heresy)

But I also do have a soft spot for some of Battle Forge (http://www.thebattleforge.co.uk/) ones. Slightly comical and a bit rough, so you have to like that kind of sculpting - and then it helps having Mark (artwho9) painting them, of course.

I just bought the pack of all infantry (CF1) Copplestone Halflings on ebay for less than $5.00 including shipping, and a week later bought the Grenadier #1439 Halflings for about $8.00 including shipping.  Both still in original blisters, they are out there to be found, you just have to be patient.

Hi everyone,
I havn`t been on this site for some months but had to cime in on this topic. I think the best halflings are from Grenadier, specifically their boxed set:

and here are some close ups

I wish I had this box. I`ll be posting some cool Grenadier minis by next week, can`t wait to join in on all the fun again.

I really miss this forum,
Damien

I've still got some of those Grenadier halflings -- some of the earliest figures I painted!

Reaper has a few nice halflings. My painting doesn't do this little guy justice, but I think it's one of my favorites:

Good to see some painted pics of those Goblin Factory figures. I had emailed the owner, trying to order some, but replies just stopped & I never got a chance to get any.

I'm now thinking about some of these...

http://www.warploqueminiatures.co.uk/catalog/halflings-hobbleshire

edit: also, a little plug for the list on my blog, I've been trying to compile a list of manufacturers in several categories, one of which is a complete list of hobbit/halfling sources: http://zerotwentythree.blogspot.com/p/28mm-figure-manufacturers.html

I have alot of those Reaper halflings too and some are fantastic.Unfortunately they do not scale up to well style and size wise with most other standard halfling manufacturers.

Warpy's halflings look great don't they.

Warpy's stuff does look good, indeed. Learning fast, he is. What the young man now needs to learn is, that quality sculpts needs to be cast in a quality material aka white metal/pewter :P but who can blame "the boy", brought up in a plastic world :)

Hello,

I'll let Don know of this reply. I've only been in contact with him this last day.

More halflings will be released next year.

I've held on to two citadel halflings for year: one is running with a twohanded cleaver over his head and the other is Frodo with the ring in the palm of his hand, I can't find either on sol...

I always now have a few others I like: Lord Titch and the Ratcatcher amongst others

I also like Rotundo

Oh My!  Oh My!  Awesome!  Wow.

I don't know that it's super urgent at this moment. I've already just shot my gaming budget until after the end of the year (and probably beyond) on WWI planes (and a few accessories that I need to finish.)

Still, I'd like to see some in person at some point, they look like a good option for building rank & file units of hobbitry.

I also consider the Copplestone halflings the best.
Reaper do a few good ones and the old Hobby Products Hobbits were also pretty good.

The new hobbits coming out from Westfalia Miniatures will definately be on the list:-

Here are my hobbits. They are a mix of Copplestone, Reaper and Hobby Products.

Unfortunately i cannot remember who make these dead halflings. They are a bit fat and heads a little too big but they are funny and i dont know anyone else doing dead hobbits!

Only good Halfling is a dead Halfling - love it!

On a side note those looking for Grenadier/Copplestone/EM4 or whatever you want to call them style Halflings especially in the UK see ForlornHopeGames on ebay here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261636218736

I have dealt with them before - great service and they normally give some sort of discount deal on next purchase to first time buyers. Hope this helps.

Just also like to add Essex Miniatures - awful, well let me rephrase that ugly, but then they are Halflings, but cheap and actually do not look bad painted. The Essex ones do have a certain inbred country bumpkin charm about them - ponies are tad too small - especially when compared to others. One with two dogs looks worth while - still need to get that one.

At any rate I am going to pitch my Halflings against an army of GW Snotlings which I have painted red as some sort of evil malign Blood Imp army out for some Halfling lard.

I like this little guy from Red Box Games:

And these are surprisingly good. Originally made by Black Tree when they own the LotR license, now available through Scotia Grendel.

And I agree Coplestone's are great!

I wrote an article about best miniatures for Tolkien Hobbits in Other Minds Magazine. You won't find anything new, but you may find it interesting anyway (the magazine is devoted to RPG in Middleearth, no t miniatures so be warned!): Link (http://www.omzine.org/downloads/om-english/om-015-other-minds-magazine-eng.pdf/at_download/file)

I use 15mm Irregular Miniature skeletons as undead hobbits in my 28mm skeleton army.

But my friends say they look like undead kids.
