Title: Water effect bases
Post by: Notts Gamer on 05 December 2011, 08:16:38 PM
Hi,

I have a 28mm Longship and would like to base it up on 'the water'

Has anyone any ideas for any clear drying resin materiall that I can use over a painted surface to give the effect of water
or any similar tips.

Thanks

I went for a clear base (http://www.blog.kings-sleep.me.uk/2009/12/i-see-no-bases.html) - but then again the figures where only a couple of cm long  lol

Two ways I know off:

1) Use tissue paper and coat in glue - then form waves in this - let dry and paint
2) Use a gel like material and create 'peaks'

I do have this bookmark that may help http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/magazine/2002/11/stuff_eng_tech_sea_water.htm (http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/magazine/2002/11/stuff_eng_tech_sea_water.htm) on the last one

Of these only the clear Vallejo may do what you need and I have never tried it.

I have used Vallejo Water Effects:

It's a clear drying paste that you can cover your base with and create peaks with a small tool.
I don't know if it's really clear in the picture below, but I also used it on the base of a Blight Drone of Nurgle (a Warhammer 40K model by Forgeworld) that I've painted:

Got me hooked now.

I've just found this using silicon sealer on a painted surface http://www.modellmarine.de/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=143&Itemid=4338 (http://www.modellmarine.de/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=143&Itemid=4338)

Result is cool:

That looks great, I'll have to see if I can find that stuff here to try it out.

Wow, that looks very easy to do and gives some great results.

On this the waves were painted in GW paints then I used cheap household gloss varnish. It was painted Regal Blue then washed with Chaos Black. Once this had dried it was highlighted with Hawk Turquiose then Space wolf Grey and Skull White on the very tips!
