I plan to get underway with this as soon as 2012 begins and funds are available after Christmas. I've decided on the figures to buy, written the rules and, since it doesn't cost me anything, commenced building.
Here then, sans thatching which will be done later en masse, is the hospital building from the mission at Rorke's Drift. Commissariat store to follow in a day or two.

This looks great, thanks for sharing, I think I will have a go and see if I can make some buildings like this.
Thanks.
-
Lovely work Paul. Look forward in seeing this project in 2012.
Cheers,
Helen
-
Great start, the building on the site looks nice and simple. :-*
Must make some of your buildings in 2012, I bought some cork tiles in 2010 and they are still sitting there glowering at me.................. :'(
-
Brilliant! I'm looking forward to this 8)
-
marvellous.
-
Brilliant as always! I hope to get into Zulu war next year as well and I'll definitely give your 'building system' a go.
-
It's the last week of term and so things are hectic at work. I've been too tired to want to play around with knives when I get home so the second Rorke's Drift build will be delayed until the weekend. I have posted the project buying list and I'll be writing up The Natives Are Restless Tonight version 2 (for multi based figures) asap so anyone who wants to can join in the fun.

Cracking work
-
Cork's Drift then, Paul? :D
It had to happen eventually.
I'm really looking forward to following this one.
-
Cork's Drift lol
I have my title!
-
lol Brilliant! Wish I'd thought of that one lol
-
Fantastic!
A word of caution before you commence with the commisariat store though, if you have a copy of Rorke's drift by Adrian Greaves check out the photograph of rorkes drift pre-battle.
The common belief holds that the west side of the store was straight edged (as drawn up by Chard) but the photograph shows there was an extension, much like the one on the rear of the hospital, with the roof slightly lower than the main building.
Cheers
Matt

Thanks for the info but I'm having straight walls so it fits into my building size templates. Luckily I'm making a wargames building not a scale model so I can happily ignore any difficult or inconvenient features like this :)
-
Hurrah! More British colonials on the horizon!
Interesting choice of minis. Redoubt minis take a lot of heat because they are somewhat larger than your standard 28mm, but they have lots of poses, are very well priced and IMO, a lot easier to paint than most.
I'll be starting a British army in the near future for my VSF gang and I have to admit because I am a cavalry nut, Empress won me over. Nevertheless, they are sooo detailed they will take me 3 times more time to paint than the Redoubt ones.
So I'm really looking forward to see your progress. It will probably be finished before mine has even got off the ground! :)

I've paraphrased a little but you've hit the nail on the head :)
-
I've posted the rules, no diagrams or pictures yet but the basics are all present.

-
Looks like you have a good start on this project. I'm also looking at a Zulu project for 2012 with a few friends inspired by Warlord Games and Empresses excellent figures. We will have to give your rules a try.
-
Matakishi,
Forgive my previous post, I have it on good authority that the photo I spoke of earlier has now been confirmed as post-battle and as such my post was incorrect.
My apologies for the misinformation, I look forward to seeing the fruition of your fine work.
Matt

Research is always a good thing and if I thought an annex to the stores was a good thing I'd have used it regardless :)
-
I ahve to admire your single-mindedness when you do a period. Costing it down to an exact amount. I imagine most of us just buy loads of shinies...............
-
If I don't plan I don't know when I've finished :)
I have to start with a set of rules so I can work out the sizes of the forces involved. This lets me know how many figures I need and of what type so I can then spend some happy hours scouring the internet to see who makes suitable miniatures and what poses etc are available. I can then amend the number and composition of units, depending on the pack sizes the figures come in, if necessary to cut down wastage and finally I can hit the 'buy now' button.
After a short wait a parcel or two will arrive and I can spread everything out on the worktop to see the true size of the undertaking. It's at this point that I decide what to paint and when. Usually I'll try to do simple bulk troops first; I'll definitely be doing the Zulus first with this project. This will take a big chunk of the pile away very quickly and start to fill up the 'finished' drawer, I find this helps to keep me motivated.
Eventually everything that arrived will be finished, I try to keep the original planned sizes down to something I can comfortably complete in a month or two so that newer shiny stuff doesn't distract me too much. I may have bought some extras as I went along too, this does happen as ideas occur, but since they are extras I don't fret if they never get painted and more often than not they get done without becoming a chore simply because there's no pressure on me to do them.
At any rate the table is clear so I'm finished. I can sit back secure in the knowledge that I have a 'complete' usable set of matched wargames armies and suitable terrain to use them on. No uncertainty, no niggling doubts and I can immediately turn my attention to the next 'best idea ever' with a clear conscience.
Stress-free wargaming the Matakishi way :)

Not THAT is very sound reasoning!
I will be following your mantra in future, to the best of my abilities.
Having decided to embark on VSF, I was quite orderly at the start; I knew what I wanted and slowly got things together, scouring the net for the exact things I was after, and then it all went to pot!
I started with the idea of doing the Japanese, was then seduced by the Brits, and have now started accumalating CSA, FSA and a few Ottaman Empire pieces....Grrrrrrr!
I need more structure!

Stress-free wargaming the Matakishi way :)
lol
One of the reasons we love your projects! :-*
Where I always fall down is on the terrain side, something you really excel at!
-
Here's the store building. Write up tomorrow and hopefully the thatching too.

I have a set of outside steps to make to give access to the top door but they won't take long.
-
I've posted the write up so full instructions for both buildings are complete. I'm off to paint and thatch them now so the final part will follow shortly.

It happens I'm in South Africa now and was in KwaZulu Natal not that long ago. The thatched roofing in this country, including in KZN, is very much darker than one expects or usually sees in gaming models and it gets dark quite quickly. When installed the grass starts a typical straw colour but after a season or so it is ends up a very dark grey-brown. I'm not up on the history of Rorke's mission but if those buildings were more than a few months old at the time of the battle I suggest a dark colour with only a medium highlight on the roof thatch.
I've not yet been to the site but it is on my list of 'must see before I leave'.
An unsolicited tip you may take or leave as you will.
-
Dark thatch it is.
WIP shot obviously, highlighting to follow once the roofs are dry and trimmed to size.

Here they are, all done. Copplestone Waziri warriors standing in for Zulus for now.

WOW! Beautiful buildings and I really like the roofs. They look perfect. Very nice work!!!!
-
Yes the rooves have come out really lovely. Nice work allround.
-
Looking good, Maestro.
-
Lovely. Are you using terrycloth for the roof?
-
Toweling so I suppose it's the same.
-
Great looking buildings and brilliant tutorial. Thanks!
Cheers,
Barry

These look good. :D
-
Looking good!!

:-* Theres lovely
-
Very nice, indeed!
-
Yep! Top roofs 8) Excellent work :-*
-
:-* Stunning work! Also a bit fan of the roofs!
-
You make it look so easy (until I try it...). Looks great!
-
what can I more say then the predecessors
-
Great looking and brilliant walkthrough of how to make them.
I think the great speed and high quality of the end product can be blamed on experience :)
-
Another outstanding project.
Always enjoy following what you do.
Thanks.
-
I got paid today so I ordered my figures from Redoubt Enterprises :)
I've also designed some action cards for the rules if anybody wants to use them.
http://www.matakishi.com/zuluwarrules.htm
(http://www.matakishi.com/Zulu%20native%203%20action%20card.jpg)
My own are a little different from these, I've added some quotes to aid the atmosphere during play. I'll put them into a pdf sometime soon for those that want them.
-
A full set of action cards are available for download here:
http://www.matakishi.com/apps/documents/
for a limited amount of time. It's a 7mb file because I've kept the picture quality high. If my bandwidth starts taking too much of a strain I'm taking it down so if you really want a copy take one and if you don't care then leave it :)
Merry Christmas.
EDIT: Swapped it out for a smaller file size version now.

Mealie bags!

Not in the final position, just checking for length (ooh-eer)
-
Is that all you plan to do, stand behind a few feet of mealie bags? ;)
-
Looking real good! :-*
-
:o It looks so good!
-
Its coming along nicely! :D
Just curious though, why would the mealie bags walls have grass (flock) on them if they were hastily erected in a couple of hours from bags in the storehouse??? ???
Just the OCD in me coming out ;)
Cheers
Fuzzy
-
The grass is on the ground, perhaps it's not clear in the photos.
-
Absolutely brilliant work. Thanks for sharing. You've inspired me to go out and buy some Zulus, thaaasands of em! Well 32 for now!
-
No figures yet but I painted some shields (from Northstar) to be 'shaken' markers :)
And my Pegasus sandbags arrived for my final redoubt.
-
I like those markers, there's something poignant about them 8)
-
Yes, good aren't they? I'm going to do some T&T ones like that, if I can ever be bothered.
-
They were surprisingly quick to do, sometimes things like this seem to take forever and you wonder why you ever bothered but these were started and finished while I listened to the battle of Helm's Deep (LotR audio book).
Still no figures... :'(
-
Do you always start with the terrain and misc. stuff and then finish with the figures?
-
No but on this occasion I have no figures to start on. Usually everything is done at the same time.
-
Thanks!
Wish I could say the same thing. :-[
-
The figures have arrived :D

And a guide on how I painted them here:

-
really impressive, how long did they take you? probaly done in a day lol
-
Very nice.
That's a lot of minis!
-
Nice one chap!!!!, really nice :)
Judging by the white patches on the lower half of the black shields and the missing headrings I assume you're painting the iNdluwengye?
I tip my hat to you mate, really well done, you certainly know how to hit a project and follow it through.
Matt
-
yes indeed, a very fine job.
-
Very nice, indeed!
:-*
-
Looks great!
-
"At one hundred yards...volley...fire!"
They're a pain to do but it is fantastic to have them lined up on the table :)
Bases over the next two days if the weather improves, meanwhile I'll be starting on the next five units of Zulus. Everything was delayed by the LPL but this will be one of my BLAM games and must be finished!

Very impressive. particularly like how you do the Zulu basing.
-
Splendid!
-
Love them all, excellent work :-*
-
Lovelly ;D
-
All done! (except the 4 Induna figures which I'm painting now but they're not needed for the siege game).
Here are the last of the defenders, Adendorf and some Natal police and a stand of British in shirtsleeves to represent the engineer working party. I also did some tents.
The five married regiments:
And a quick shot of all the figures so far.
I might have a game of this on monday so maybe there'll be some photos of the game in progress :)
More and bigger pics on my site: http://www.matakishi.com/zuluproject.htm
I've already ordered more Zulus and some British cavalry and artillery to expand the scope of the game onto the veldt. After that it's just wagons and a Zulu kraal for the final touches.
-
Looking great Paul ;D
-
They look cracking all based up :-* :-* :-*
-
:-*
Very nice, indeed!
They look super, especially the group shot!
-
Just finished Zulu on blu ray :)
-
I really like the look of this Paul, hopefully someday I'll get the opportunity of a game.
-
Nice work Paul, very well done.
Cheers,
Helen
-
Just finished Zulu on blu ray :)
I'm curious - what possible benefit could an age old film have of blu ray? o_o
-
It's a noticeably better picture than the dvd. Colours, detail, sharpness are all improved. I wasn't expecting much but the reviews were positive and I gave it a try, I'm glad I did. £7.00 well spent.
-
We had three games on Monday but I don't have pictures yet, hopefully soon.
Anyway, the Zulus suffered from a lack of rifle armed troops (they haven't arrived yet) but did a sterling job of making the British players sweat regardless. Rules amendments have been written to reflect the flavour of the encounter and the finished rules will be available as soon as I have so 'action' photos to pepper them with. more games coming this Saturday too.
in the meantime, a pair of Zulu command stands and some status markers for the British.

wonderful !!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Nice!
I much prefer markers that blend in on the tabletop and you are one of the best sources of inspiration in that regard.
Thank you!
:)
-
I shall resist the obvious comment this time ;)
Very nice indeed. :)
-
Redoubt gun and Tiger miniatures wagon.
-
Again, great stuff, looking forward to seeing an AAR or two.
-
Just waiting on Giles' photos from the first one (I didn't take any of course). Unfortunately the game tomorrow has been cancelled because I have another commitment but it will be rescheduled no doubt.
-
Got a package from Redoubt today, you'd think I'd be happy, but you'd be wrong. Mis-packed so I'm missing my artillery piece and the order I placed before this one hasn't arrived at all so that'll be lost.
To cap it all the figures look like recasts they're so shitty. Durnford's horse is quartered by mold lines and has a chunk of its head missing, so much for a showpiece personality model.
I thought the appalling casting on the gun crew above was as bad as it could get but I was wrong.
I've no idea why I give these people money. They used to make such lovely figures :(
-
Loving all your work Paul! Keep up the good work!
-
I think their moulds are knackered, the last batch of Zulu Wars figures I got were poor castings and that must be three or four years ago. They really should renew the moulds. >:(
-
Fantasic stuff.
Thats the trouble with the Zulu War - you start off with a little Rorke's Drift set up, then all of sudden, its NNMC, Gatlings, rockets, FLH, NMP, styrene Isandlwanas and half of Ulundi ;)
-
Some firepower for the Zulus.
The mounted infantry are underway and Trevor from Redoubt has phoned me to say my replacement figures are in the post. I hope to have the final rules sorted in a week or so once I get some photos for them.
-
My replacement lancers arrived today. Ack! What dire castings, they're going in a pile until I get to a show where I'll be getting a refund for this shit. No right hands ffs! And the figures are the wrong size for the rest of the range as they've been taken from the Sudan range as well. I really can't be bothered any more. No more Redoubt for me.
-
Sad to hear how the figures have fallen in quality. Fortunately was never on my buying list.
Hope you find better priced replacement figures.
Gracias,
Glenn
-
I've just ordered some Empress lancers, I'll see how they match up size wise, should be ok as they'll be a distinct unit. Here's hoping...
-
One photo from the game Paul/Matakashi was talking about
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/reverseshot.jpg)
I should apologise but I got so wrapped up in these great games I only took a few photos - I'll leave Paul to post some more
-

Super project.
Sorry to hear about the bad casting though...

I do hope Paul that you get back to Redoubt and tell them that these castings are unacceptable not only to you but for any customer who maybe unaware of this issue. Surly they must be aware when they pack these miniatures just what state they are in!
Nice work on your project.
Cheers,
Helen
-
Paul, I'm sorry to see that you've had issues with the Redoubt castings, but those Lancers do look very poor.
I've recently painted a load of their F&IW figures, which were mostly very good, crisp and clean. The one or two exceptions were dire though I'd have to say, notably a Ranger with only half a face. I agree with Helen, you need to press this with the Company or others might have the same experience.
-
I've written to them about it but without redoing the moulds which is expensive I don't see a solution for them.
I have/had extensive Redoubt collections, Zulu, FFL, FIW, Boxer Rebellion, Napoleonic Naval, ACW, Sudan and more and I'm very disappointed with the current state of the Zulu line.
Hopefully things will improve.
-
A sort of game reports but mostly some waffle about the hows and whys of the rules. Plenty of nice pictures though.

Fine looking setup.
The buildings look great.
-
It looks great!
How well do the cork walls stand up? Did you use standard cork tiles, or something a bit thicker and more durable?
-
Thank you Paul for your report on the game mechanics. They read well and it seems from your report that it can be a very surprising contest.
Cheers,
Helen

The treadmill continues...
Mounted infantry, Durnford and some Natal Carbineers and a few Frontier Light Horse. (They're not varnished yet because the cats are sleeping on my varnishing table so the horses are shiny.)

@Rob cork stands up very well, I use standard 4mm floor tiles, not noticeboard cork, it doesn't work.
-
Those have turned out very well Paul :)
-
what a blast,
they are great
-
Really great stuff!
-
Superb looking collection!
-
Empress lancers arrived today, I hope to start them tomorrow. They're considerably smaller than the Redoubt figures (but beautifully formed) so it'll be interesting to see if they look too odd on the table.
-
Some artillery and Dalton and Reynolds as another command stand for the British. I included Dalton in my Zulu War set at my brother-in-law's insistence, he served in the Logistics Corps and they go on about Dalton's VC a lot :)

More Zulus, this time in full regalia. I'm planning on doing another four units of these.
and the second wagon from Tiger miniatures.
Only the lancers and some pack mules on the painting table now then it'll be time for some group shots.

All basing is a compromise, my bases are the same for everything except jungle, works for me and is ok as a general approximation of groundwork. Other people do it differently of course, many do it better.
-
I do it exactly the same way these days.
-
I am loving this thread and looking forward to more. p.s. also loved your French and Indian War posts on your site, your terrain is terriffic
-
Well, here they are, the last figures for my Zulu project, 17th Lancers from Empress Miniatures.
I also did some Britannia mules because you always need mules (I did 3 sets, one is having its base repaired).
I hope to take some shots of everything together tomorrow.
I also hope to buy some more Zulus at Colours in a week's time, enough for another two, possibly four units but these are extra to what I'd originally planned for. I might buy a rocket battery too. Anyway, no matter hwat extras I decide on, the project is officially complete!

Cracking setup up and I love the whole 'a game in a box' type set up of a project like this with a definite ending.
