Title: Super miniature line?
Post by: hendybadger on December 17, 2011, 11:12:01 PM
I know of Pulp City, Chronoscope, Superfigs, Crossover and Heroclix ranges.
But are there any other Superhero mini ranges out there?

Thanks in advance

Lance and Laser used to do the Villains & Vigilantes series. While Armorcast has picked up the fantasy stuff from L&L, I don't know if they have the superheroes yet.

If you want some key phrases for some ebay searches, Champions minis were made by three different companies over the years: Heritage, Grenadier, and (I believe) Soldiers & Swords.  Other out of print options include GW's Golden Heroes (2 box sets, I believe), TSR's Marvel Super Heroes (3 sets), and Grenadier's DC Heroes minis (5 sets).

There was a Silver Age Sentinels range 5-7 years back. I still have several of them sealed in blister in the "for trade" pile, should perhaps list them one of these days.

Black Hat miniatures has a few Superheroes in their Mutants and Madmen SF line:

The Citadel Golden Heroes line included blisters as well as the two boxed sets, and there were many variant sculpts of the various figures (alternate heads/costumes/etc.):

With the ranges you 're speaking about you've got enough super minis for massive battles...and years of painting ;)

Mention to Heroclix, their figures (style and sculpture) are often underestimated in my opinion. Especially the old marvel sets (Infinity challenge set, Cloberrin time, etc...) wich I like a lot.

Im just not keen on the Heroclix models myself. And they arnt easy to get hold of in my corner of the world.
Not too impressed by the Superfigs either.
I have 75% of the Pulp City models and all the Chronoscope ones I like.
Thats why Im looking for other options.

That line was picked up by Team Frog.  I have them all and they tend to be kind of small.  Maybe closer to 25mm.

There were two eras of V&V/Living Legends minis. The first era were definitely 25mm at most, but the latter ones are pretty finely sculpted 28 mm minis (by Sandra Garrity, who also sculpted the Silver Age Sentinels minis BTW, so they match well).

This might be a mix.  There are some that scale up with 28mm ok, but most seem a bit small. I know Sandra Garrity sculpted some of them.  Off the top of my head, the InterCrime Agents scaled up pretty good.

While some of the Superfigs line of sculpts aren't of the highest quality, most are really nice, dynamic sculpts. Bob Naismith sculpted a lot of the line, and they are excellent. I think that you should take another look at the line - the figs possess lots of character and paint up very nicely.

Oh yes. First post.
I will take another look at the Superfigs

Some of the Superfigs look a lot better in hand than they do in pictures too.

I have found that with afew ranges.
Might have to order 1 or 2 and see.

Is there a UK stockist for Superfigs?

Though not a superhero range there are a few minis by Hasslefree which would fit.

More than a few if you are also including supersoldiers/special agents in which case most of the adventurers and martial artists ranges fit. The fantasy range has some really nice ones for medieval and mythological heroes, like Shining Knight, Norse gods and Amazons.

Mutant Joe (http://www.hfminis.co.uk/shop?product=mutant-joe~hfz211&category=miniatures~undead-%26-mutant) is probably one that really stands out for me, then of course there is Kev in a "not-IronMan" suit from the dress-a-kev range.

Yup. I'm using Mutant Joe for a superstrong character.

And Kat (http://www.hfminis.co.uk/shop?product=kat~hfa004&category=miniatures~adventurers)/Dionne (http://www.hfminis.co.uk/shop?product=dionne-%28b%29~hfa021&category=miniatures~adventurers) for a vigilante.

And Griffon (http://www.hfminis.co.uk/shop?product=griffon~hfm011&category=miniatures~aliens%2C-animals-%26-monsters) for a mutant (converted removing the swords).

Don't forget that Iron Kev (like any mini representation of Kev) is small, very small by heroic 28mm standards.

I prefer the classic 'spandex' style heros

No UK stockist as such, BUT if you get in touch with Old Glory (UK) you *may* be able to cobble together an order that way (it may take time to come through).

Re: Superfigs - for a while they (and Heroclix) were the only real game in town in current supers minis. I find the detailing leans towards the sparse and is on softer side, and others may disagree, and they are priced accordingly. For some they are perfect for their needs, for others not so much. The line does have great depth and range so is worth a look if you enjoy the style.

Will give them a shout after the holidays and see if they can do anything.

Its not good that Im already eyeing up the largest model they do........

Course it's not helped by "heroic" actually meaning "gigantism/elephant man."

I'm a fan of more accurately scaled 28mm stuff.

That's a whole different matter however.

However saying that sometimes it's nice to have some variation as, well, people are varied.
Wolverine is only about 5' 3".

OK, its been a while since this topic was last used but it thought it was a good thing to bring back for people to reference and ask ....

Has anybody found any other super minis lines in the last few months?

I picked up some Superfigs from the local shop today and they are good for the price. I'll paint these up before I decide if I'll be getting any more of them.

I've been told the FINAL production molds will be ready "early next week" so as soon as I get the word, I will take approximately 5-7 seconds to put in my order.  Then, they cast it and ship it.  I'll take a day or two getting stuff out the door to the original backers, then open the store.  I would hope by mid July, but the more I learn about this process, the less I would hold my breath.  lol

The Mighty MONGO!
He not Mighty Mongo!

This Mighty Mongo!

Mighty Mongo SMASH!

Ahem. That is to say, I should think some of the Dark Age games minis would work for Superheroes, at least of the grittier not-spandex variety. Some even have capes (and there are a couple of spandex clad ones too now that I think of it) :P

Be adviced that if Hasslefree is at the small end of the 28mm spectrum, then these tend to be more @ the opposite end.

...and since I already stepped off the "beaten path" (that is, outside of the lines of minis that are actually meant to represent superheroes per se) and an add at the Beasts of War caught my eye - there's Taban Miniature's Eden with it's rather whacky postapocalyptic stuff, including killer klowns and S/M folksies among others. Might be more suitable for supervillains I suppose (as would many of the Dark Age minis) but all the same, find them here:
