Title: Pulp Science Fiction project - help with spaceships needed
Post by: Bullshott on 18 December 2011, 11:56:17 PM
As a break from painting my VSF French and assorted flying machines for them, I've started work on some pulp science fiction figures for a skirmish game project I've been thinking about for a while. The style will be very 1950s, so think Dan Dare. To start with, I am working on stuff in roughly the following order:

Human astronauts
Short big headed aliens - using 'greys' from Black Cat Bases
Alien soldiers (minions/hired help for the short big headed aliens)
Assorted robots
Human security team

Now the problem - I want a suitable vehicles for these, in particular I'm looking for suitable spaceships or 'lander' type craft for both humans and aliens. Scale is 28mm and they must look pulpy. I'm happy to goe for either reasonably priced resin/kits or scratch build from suitable 'donor' items. Help!!!

You'll need to lose the figures becaue they're too small but the rocket is great.

Also great.
I'm using both these for my pulp sci fi.

Just found these too!

The rocket is perfect.

Not 100% sure about the saucer, but I like the idea of being able to light it.

I was also thinking about the 1/32 UFO:

Remove the pilot and raise the floor level to hold a number of small aliens and this could be fun - very pulpy!

More ideas please!

Not sure how much this will help, but there was some discussion about rockets for the space mouslings over at the Reaper forum - http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?/topic/43403-a-rocket-for-mouselings

I haven't found any of the novelty shaped bubble baths yet, but I'm still looking  ;D

Another couple of links courtesy of the Reaper forum, although more art and inspiration related

I use a 1/32 V2 as a 1950s space rocket in 28mm (all the cheaper movies used stock footage of V2s!).

For Flying Saucers, there have been polystyrene injection-moulded kits at one time or another of saucers from The Invaders, Lost in Space and Forbidden Planet, no doubt among others.

I've got a Peppa Pig sweet dispenser rocket that I picked up last Christmas. One day I'll get around to cleaning off the glue left from the stickers, filling the holes for the assembling screws and giving it a spray off silver paint, rather than having it sat on my kitchen window ledge waiting for step 1. :D

I'm already using the spacemen, but not sold on the saucers (or the price for what you get).

I've got a Perry Rhodan saucer that's pretty big http://www.fantastic-plastic.com/PERRY%20RHODAN%20BLUES%20SHIP%20PAGE.htm (http://www.fantastic-plastic.com/PERRY%20RHODAN%20BLUES%20SHIP%20PAGE.htm) (not my model)... that has been on the table for some 6mm games as a landing craft.
Probably not the right style for you though and may be hard to track on down anyway.

Earlier today, I uploaded some more images taken at the IPMS Scale Model World show at Telford.

They include some images of Sci-Fi rockets and space craft that may be of interest.

Agreed!

This has got me thinking about the possibilities for scratch building some spaceships. I have a nasty feeling that this project could get out of control and tak up a lot of my time  :o  :o  :o
