In an effort to keep myself on track and motivated, I have decided to start a thread for my Beasts of Chaos warband before it's started rather than after it's finished for a change.
After completing my old school Realm of Chaos Khorne warband, and sourcing all the figures I'll need for the warbands of the other three Powers, I became oddly compelled to add a fifth force to the project, a Chaos Undivided group. I thought that it would be best typified by the raw and unthinking might of the beastlike denizens of the deepest forests and remotest mountain tops.
So this is what I've cobbled together:
A mixture of beastmen, centaurs, minotaurs and harpies, backed up by a Skaven sorceror and with the added might of a dragon ogre (that I managed to snag for peanuts off eBay - yay me!).
I'm hoping to tackle them in sections, and post up the results as they happen. Hopefully you guys can cajole me into getting my skinny white arse in gear and finishing this one in a reasonable amount of time, not the two years it took to complete the last lot...
-
Oh, that's looking quite promising!
Having just bought a load of Chaos stuff (albeit 40k, and far more modern ones to boot) here on the LAF myself, I'll be watching this with interest. Love the eclecticity of the model mix.
-
Cheers mate. I got a few of these from fellow LAFers too. Very generous people here. :) I love the old Realm of Chaos minis, probably my favourite range ever. Some of the sculpting may be a bit ropey by today's standards, but the individuality and imagination more than makes up for it.

Damn straight! The late 80s chaos models are pure fun! Nice selection JB, that Dragon Ogre in particular is a doozy of a model. Look forward to seeing them with some paint slap...errr, expertly applied! :) The khorne warband was a treat!
-
You've even got the Olley harpies!
.....now where on eatg did I put my dragon ogre?
-
You have been busy ;) So get painting (looks like a good start) :D
-
Nice mix of figures.
Looking forward to seeing them painted up...
Chop, chop! ;)
-
So, are the first section done yet? ;D ;D ;D
You are far too organised, I would have to make it all up as I went along but that is probably why I never finish a project.
The dragon ogre is one of my old favourites and is a hulking great lump of lead which surprisingly does not appear to have attained any value amongst collectors. It must be to do with that old EE adage "make the rules and they will pay" (or something like that)
-
I love the minotaur with the short/cutoff sword.
-
Having seen your other work with vintage Citadel Chaos minis I can only salivate profusely at the thought of what these brigands might look like when finished. Consider me an official cajoler!
-
I also would not mind seeing how these end up. I still remember your last warband :-*
So get to work! ;)

I think around 25 quid seems to be the norm for the old Dragon Ogre. It's a lovely model indeed. I'm really looking forward to seing how this develops and I hope it won't take two years! :D
-
A VERY NICE selection of minis you've accumulated there...of course they'll look SO MUCH COOLER once they're all painted up.
-
look promising mate! :-* super flavour minis selection!
lookin forward to see them painted :)

Well a few of them used to be yours buddy, so I hope I'll do 'em justice! :D
@ Svennn/Pil - I love the dragon ogre figure too, probably one of the best models GW ever made IMO. Does anyone know who sculpted it? It looks a familliar style somehow. I've seen them go for up to forty quid on "buy it now", and 25 - 30 seems average. So I was really happy to get mine for 15, including postage. It really is a whacking great lump of lead.

Wasn't it a Nick Bibby sculpt, as far as I remember?
-
Can't wait to see them finished.

I'm pretty sure it is. :)
-
BEEF!
Three minotaurs, backbone of the warband.

And the warband leader, minotaur lord Pervos the White:

And the herd in full:

Quite enjoyed playing with different fleshtones with these.
-
Cracking work, Jolly Bob!
Love the work on the flesh. Especially liking the albino Lord.
Your fur is certainly none too shabby either.
Likey, likey!
:-*
Waiting for more..... ;D
-
Lovely stuff!!
Not sure about Mr. White's studded leather tanga though. But hey, it was the eighties and all that... lol
-
Cracking stuff!
Duncan
-
Ooh, nice! Especially like Pervos, good call doing him in white!
-
Oh yeah, thats the good stuff right there!!!
-
Cheers guys! :)
Not sure about Mr. White's studded leather tanga though.
That was the most disturbing thing I've painted since I realised the Heresy werewolf is anatomically correct... lol
-
The Bovine Boys painted up WONDERFULLY...there's something suitably disturbing about the Big White Fellow. VERY WELL DONE!
I'm sure my erstwhile minis are happy to be part of your OH-SO-COOL Gang.
-
Mooooooo...
-
Only 17 left to go!
Oh yes: very nice indeed. Glorious, in fact.
-
Cowabunga - they're nice! :D
-
Cheers all.
@ DeafNala - hopefully getting a start on them next, although the dragon ogre keeps threatening me. We'll see what inclination, time and sobriety can reap. :)
-
A great start. Pervos steals the show obviously.
Thats serious wardrobe coordination for a beastlike denizen of the deepest forests. I can just imagine Pervos dropping his costume designs into the local tannery, "Pervos want to feel special. Just gloves, thong and strap".
That dragon ogre is a classic. Was it Marauder rather than Citadel? I cant remember for sure but I think that I remember the White Dwarf ad.
Cool stuff, keep it up!
-
Cheers man. :)
DO was definitely Citadel, in that incarnation anyway. Marauder did some later on, but much smaller and frankly not as nice (although I think they were direct copies of some artwork in one of the RoC books).
-
Right, it's been almost a month since you last (photographic) update so I thought I'd better get on your case viz. this glaring deficiency.
You did request cajoling re. this undertaking so cajole I shall.
-
Good god, sir, you are right! :o Most remiss of me.
I have been unfortunately waylaid by real life concerns (the impending arrival of JollyBob Junior being the foremost) but the Dragon Ogre is on the desk and is half done. I'm hoping I'll be able to make some proper progress over the next few days.
-
I have been unfortunately waylaid by real life concerns (the impending arrival of JollyBob Junior being the foremost)
I hope that's 'concerns' in the generic "oh my, life will never be the same again/will I be a good father/I hope they're healthy and bright/I hope my lady love will be fine" pre-birth sense, rather than anything specific. Good luck to you!
-
Exactly right, Rab, and thank you. :)
Of course we may end up with a Bob-ette. Which means I'll have to find a whole new way of sneaking Ospreys in between the Gruffalo and Alice in Wonderland...
-
Very nice Minotaurs. Looking forward to seeing those Bob Olley harpies painted up too, did I correctly see on of the male ones in your line up? I've had one of them floating around the lost and damned lead pile for years now, can't find it for toffee at the moment though.
-
Cheers Erny. :)

Yeah, I have all three, Ronnie, Nancy and Maggie to do.
-
:o
I hadn't noticed but there are three and in the back of my mind they may well look like that tripartite of '80s rightwingery. Are you yanking my chain or is this an actual thing!!! I'm going to have to turn the Northern Wastes, erm garage, upside down to find Ronnie. A red head harpy awesome.
I shan't comment on how appropriate or not these models are.
-
I've definitely heard them called that before, but whether they appeared under those names in catalogues I couldn't say. They really do look like them though. The pics here:
http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/olley/index.php/Citadel_-_Harpies
don't make it too obvious, but when you have them in hand it's pretty clear. ;)
-
Finally! A proper update! :o

Quite pleased, this has to be the biggest mini I've ever attempted. Hope you like it. :)
-
Fantastc job on the Big Lad, JB!
:-* :-* :-*
I particularly like the armour.
Great work!
-
What a beauty! :-*
The green face works really well.
-
Lovely stuff! I've one of those in the queue myself, now I can't wait to paint it! :D
-
Lovely! A cracking paintjob on a cracking mini!
-
VERY NICELY DONE! I love the skin tones, & the metalwork looks GREAT...a VERY impressive mini.
-
Dragon ogre is magnificent. :-* Might have to dig mine out of the lead mountain for some TLC...

Same here :) Though with the LPL at the moment I doubt I stray far from just looking at them...
-
Thanks guys, very pleased that you like him. :D
-
Darn it I really am going to have to stump up the cash for one of these. Just once can't you guys do a terrible job that makes me decide something is off the to do list? You have managed to do it in more vibrant greens than the original PJ I remember in WD but still kept the look the same.
Oh and congratulations on the little one coming, I missed that earlier in the thread. Is it the first one or a subsequent one? They really eat into painting time....(but are very worth it, my 3 year old came home to my brother and I having a game, you never saw eyes so wide and excited.)
-
Thanks Erny. :) Sorry to have cost you money. lol
This will be our first. I'm hoping our little Boblet(te) will behave in a decorous and orderly fashion, leaving me an hour or so here and there to relax with my brushes.
My spectacles are rosy, you may have noticed... ;D
-
My spectacles are rosy, you may have noticed... ;D
They certainly are! lol
-
A small update this time.
Managed to get the Harpies finished:
Shit, they've seen us...!
And the first of the Centaurs came out quite well, I thought.
(http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb155/GrunterPulpit/Chaos/Centaurchamp1.jpg) (http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb155/GrunterPulpit/Chaos/Centaurchamp2.jpg) (http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb155/GrunterPulpit/Chaos/Centaurchamp3.jpg)
I'm hoping to get a few more done in the next week or so, but not betting any money on it.
-
That middle harpy looks awfully like Ronald Reagan. Nice work, by the way! :D
-
Beautiful paintjobs on those Harpies, JollyBob!
Those Olley sculpts are some of the best around, I reckon, and you have done them justice.
The centaur is pretty sweet too!
:-*
That middle harpy looks awfully like Ronald Reagan. Nice work, by the way! :D
The one on the right must be Maggie then, with Hesseltine on the left of Ron!
Or is it the other way round? o_o
-
Cheers, lads. :)
And they're Ronnie, Nancy and Maggie, as far as I can make out.
-
Great stuff JB! I really like the theme of this thread.
lol @ Harpy faces.
-
No, the one on the right is Hesseltine.
-
Well, possibly. The hair is definitely similar, I'll grant you. Not sure about the tits, mind... ;)
-
Ron & the Bird Babes look TERRIFIC...GREAT painting & basing. The same can be said for the Centaur, plus he looks quite happy...must have something to do with being hung like a horse.
-
Looking good, JB. The Centaur is especially cool: you really do manage to make your retro miniatures actually look, er, retro. You've got most of the big stuff out of the way, which is the main thing. I'm looking forward to a complete group shot in May/June-time (unless there are any more children on the way?*)?
*Congratulations, by the way.
-
Thanks guys. :)
FF, Boblet is dragging his heels so I may get a couple more out before he arrives, but that still leaves five centaurs, a skaven and ten beastmen to finish. Might be a bit behind schedule on these...
...and thanks for the good wishes. :)
-
Great stuff - love the harpies!
Good work on the centaur - got a few of them myself for a future project - will have to stop by again for reference pics! 8)
-
That middle harpy looks awfully like Ronald Reagan. Nice work, by the way! :D
Sweet Jeezuz, it DOES look like the Gipper! Good call Joroas! lol
-
Great job JB! I dig the Centaur. I have three of them that I was ogling in my bitz box just yesterday. Keep it up and you may shame me to paint mine. ;)
-
Managed to knock one more out, probably the last I'll get done for a while.
I really dig the classical look of this Centaur, one of my favourites from the range. A bugger to photograph properly though due to the angle I attached the torso at. ::) I'd be interested to hear what you think. :)
-
the angle I attached the torso at. ::) I'd be interested to hear what you think. :)
That's some proper centaur stuff there! The angle is probably a bit awkward for gaming, but otherwise it looks good.
-
Cheers buddy! :D
-
I've got that fellow in my leadpile - excellent work by the way.
Not sure when I'll ever get round to sorting my own chaos warband out...
-
That is some fine brushwork on the Old Lad...VERY WELL DONE!
-
Cheers Al, glad you think I've done the old fellow justice! :)
