Title: City Table: Complete!
Post by: Warren Abox on 29 December 2011, 06:42:04 AM
It took six months of intermittent work, but Christmas weekend finally saw the completion of my dream city table.  Check it:

And because I don't really have enough room for a table like this, it all folds up into 2 of those 18-gallon plastic containers:

Most of the techniques I used are pretty well known, foamcore, The Dip, etc.  But if there's interest, I can post some work in progress pictures later.

Same here.
I'd like to see some more detailed pics.

I'm playing with levels in a city terrain layout atm (though mine is for Infinity, it could also work for Necro) as well, and am always looking for new or different ways to try stuff.

I'll be switching to 3mm foamed pvc sheet though - as it will cost me less than the same amount of foamcore and allow me to spray it with abandon, and be more durable than the foamcore.

I really like those building shapes, perfect for necromunda!

I like the way the buildings have been built purely for the mechanics of gaming, rather than looking like actual buildings (the large platforms rather than the proper, smaller buildings).  I think a lot of tables out there look stunning but lack the access that something like this table offers...I reckon it would be great fun to play a game on this table compared to having to struggle with super-accurate tables. The platforms are interesting to look at and just building-like enough to pull it off.

It is refreshing to see :)

Great stuff!
 :-*

I echo the calls for close-ups, too.

I particularly like the way that you have made it possible to pack away so small, very important, if you ask me. It allows you to build more stuff....

And welcome to the Forum- A great way to introduce yourself!

A big welcome and props for very nice work. Any shots of the individual tiles and structures?

Oh yeah, guess I should have said something about that.  I've been waiting to sign up until I had something interesting to post other than, "Cool mini, bro."  Thanks for all the kind words.

Here's a close-up of the globe fountain:

And one final shot of the hedges from a mini-perspective:

As far as the game-ability aspect goes, this was heavily inspired by Necromunda.  I was looking for a crowded board, one that didn’t have a lot of sight lines running the entire length of the board.  To do that, you have to incorporate a lot of angles at other than 90-degrees.  That’s why so many of the support arms cut off at 30 or 60 degree angles.  That’s also why the industrial board has buildings and lumber stacked at random angles as well.  That leaves just the seams along the boards as the biggest open fire lanes, and I plan on filling those with smaller moveable items like trees, utility boxes, and those sorts of odds and ends.  Also need to bang out a few bridges come to think of it.

That's an impressive set of terrain!  :o

The shapes and colours are giving me a very Genestealer Cult vibe (I consider that a good thing)...
I can't wait to see what you'll do for small "clutter" terrain.
