Yes, a very nice publication full of luvely b/w illustrations. A must-have! There is another one about ACW. The Africa book was available from Foundry, you can see it here http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/books/books.asp
but if you click on "wargames rules", it's gone. :?  Funny site ...

Anyway, highly recommended!

Foundry sent me one of these that I didn't order and they didn't bill me for it.

I love Foundry, they're always doing things like that to me. I've had loads of free stuff off them over the years. All the bad Foundry Voodoo seems to happen to other people.

It is a great book. I had no idea it was written by old Squinty from TMP.

I had good experiences with Foundry too, had got lots of goodies and fast service. But the 2000AD stuff is definitely too expensive

Glad you liked the book, Polynikes. Old Squinty is a man of many parts, although some of them are defective.

I'm assuming that's the same Peter Dennis that does work for Osprey?

I was just looking at his pictures in the Campaign book on Assaye yesterday.

Peter's a terrific artist, and a nice guy. I've known him since he published the first edition of my 'Science versus Pluck' back in 1987, whne dinosaurs yet roamed the earth. He continues to live in Mansfield, which I find incomprehensible.

I've had some good times in Mansfield, getting drunk on Peach Schnapps and hurling abuse at a particularly useless Third Division goalkeeper. Good way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

But you're right, I wouldn't want to live there.

I love this book fpr all the great line drawings and the way it breaks down the Battle of Tamai into a series of chronological sections.

The ACW book is even better.

Tactful, Boggler, tactful ---

No, the ACW book is great. Paddy Griffith stayed at my house in Georgia and we went round battlefields together. He's quite controversial in ACW circles, because he doesn't buy into a lot of the very jingoist mythology about the waugh.

That's how they say it down there.

The Africa book is one of the most useful supps. I've ever come across for any game period. Highly recommended.

I bought it when it was first published & I still dip into it for campaign info on logistics etc.

The perfect beginner's guide, in that it never stops being of use, even when you own dozens of other [more expensive] books on the subject.

It would seem that these books are available from the Perry twins from their site, though I havn't found the listing yet..but here's their news from a few days ago..

http://theminiaturespage.com/news/719867/

sometimes they release the news before they have fully updated their site so it may be up by now. I'll certainly be getting them.

Cheers

Apologies for the thread necromany but I thought i'd say there is a box load of these sitting on the side at our club in Southend.  They belong to Dave Ryan at Caliver Books and are ready to be shipped out to Dave's new premesis in Nottingham.  He may already have some in stock there too.  If he doesn't, tell him I said there's some in storage at SSWG.  It's a great little book, I think I paid a £5 for mine, which is an absolute bargain.

all the best,

Trev

Cavilier has it here:  http://www.caliverbooks.com/catviewer.php?cat=19th&subcat=50&subcode=N

Apparently you can get it free if you subscribe to one of their magazines.

Show regular and Foundy/Perry peddler Dave Thomas carries it and I picked up a copy at Forfar @ SKELP (it's north of the antonine wall if you haven't hear of it!) on Saturday last. £4 for mine.

No, it's a well known fact that when you are travelling abroad, the only way to make foreigners understand you is to SHOUT VERY LOUDLY  lol

No worries, it's an easy mistake to make.

I did not mean to upset anybody, I just jump back ½ meter when I suddenly come across a post in all capitals (or fat, btw.)  lol

My eyesight is deteriorating a bit these days, and I sit a bit too close to the screen....

It's a nice intro book for colonial African warfare but I found the Portuguese part to be too superficial and erroneous.

"Portuguese attempts to take 'effective occupation' of Angola led to the campaigns of Artur de Piava in the Cubango region (1885-8), and a series of risings, of which the Bailundo War(1902) is the best remembered [Very poor research]. Not until 1915, when 7,000 metropolitan troops were sent against the Cuanhama, did Portugal have real authority over all Angola [Not true. There were several rebellions after that]. In Mozambique the Portuguese drive inland met repeated defeats at the hands of the Chikunda in the Zambezi valley [before defeating them in the 18880s], but more success in the coastal region where Gungunyane's rising (which had captured Lourenço Marques in 1894) [Wrong. Again, very poor research] was put down by the end of 1896."

Wow, THAT was an old thread.  :o

Nevertheless - Howard is as nice an internet acquaintance as can be found, and his commitment to gaming, be it historical. VSF, SF, or Pulp, is a rare one. And I'm sure this publication still has a lot to offer to anyone interested in the period, and having it surface again here on LAF is not the worst that could happen  ;)

Remember to check his latest work on the Defiance Games website: http://defiancegames.com/

Apart from these I still recommend it as a good colonial gaming book. I have nothing against Howard, au contraire, he's a pilar of the hobby and a nice bloke.

I agree with Gringo.  I especially found the line drawings of the charging Hademdowah at various distances to be a very useful visual aid when reading about colonial battles.

yes the drawings were made by my good friend Peter Dennis.
unfortunately he's now more involved in other periods than colonial.
