I've been looking around for sources of 28mm minis to represent certain Red Shadows and Cobra characters. Close replicas would be nice, but realistically, I'll be happy if they just evoke the spirit of the original. Here's what I've got so far:
Baron Ironblood - Artizan Dr Klomp w/ mods http://artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1214 (http://artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1214)
Black Major - none (tempted to go with a WWII German officer)
Kraken- Reaper Sea Creature http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/sea%20creature/sku-down/50168 (http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/sea%20creature/sku-down/50168)
Muton - Reaper Deep Sea Diver w/ mods http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/Chronoscope/latest/50085 (http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/Chronoscope/latest/50085) (can anyone provide the proper pronunciation for Muton?)
Red Jackel - Artizan General Von Krauch http://artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1714 (http://artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1714) or Semyon http://artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1236 (http://artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1236)
Red Laser - Golgo Island Legend Col. Zanzibar http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zsITVt2KDEQ/TKtMEVHLCsI/AAAAAAAAA34/lQv0oR3DhmM/s1600/ZanzibarLegends.jpg (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zsITVt2KDEQ/TKtMEVHLCsI/AAAAAAAAA34/lQv0oR3DhmM/s1600/ZanzibarLegends.jpg)
Red Shadow - Bolt Action plastic WWII Germans
Red Vulture - Bolt Action plastic WWII Germans
Red Wolf - none
Skeletron - EM4 Robots http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/ROBOTS.html (http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/ROBOTS.html)
Escape Armor - Heavily modified original Space Hulk Terminator
Cobra Commander – Golgo Island Legend Col. Zanzibar http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zsITVt2KDEQ/TKtMEVHLCsI/AAAAAAAAA34/lQv0oR3DhmM/s1600/ZanzibarLegends.jpg (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zsITVt2KDEQ/TKtMEVHLCsI/AAAAAAAAA34/lQv0oR3DhmM/s1600/ZanzibarLegends.jpg)
Destro - Artizan General Von Krauch http://artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1714 (http://artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1714) or Semyon http://artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1236 (http://artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1236)
Baroness – Reaper Natalia http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/Chronoscope/latest/50149 (http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/Chronoscope/latest/50149)
Firefly - none
Major Blood - none
Cobra Soldier – none
Cobra Officer – none
Any suggestions appreciated, whether for missing minis or alternates. I'm really only interested in Red Shadows and Cobra, but if anyone wants to add hero suggestions, I'm sure they'll be useful to others.
Most of the above was harvested from this thread http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=30024.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=30024.0)

Like you, I went towards von Krauch as my Destro, but used this figure from Foundry Street Violence range as the Baroness:

I also went for Assault Group MVD for the Cobra troopers, due to their helmet/facemask combination, Though Victory Force do pretty good not-Cobras in their Wehrwolf selection: http://www.victoryforce.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=VFM&Category_Code=newwar (http://www.victoryforce.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=VFM&Category_Code=newwar)

I don't know too much about buying complete miniatures but here is a useful resource:

Pronunciation for Muton = Mute-on. A play on the word mutant.
Red Shadows are done by Gripping Beast as head swaps for their Germans (you can probably swap them onto others perfectly well too) as shown in soapy's blog here:

Now this idea brings back some great memories!
It (almost) ranks up there with doing a Star Wars project.
Thanks for those links, chaps. That Soapy sure know how to pull a rabbit from a hat!
:-*

I don't know whether this link would be of any interest to you, but Soapy aka Andy Dormer of Gripping Beast fame did a similar project. It might be worth trawling through the blog for some ideas and inspiration.

Hope this is of interest to you.

I've looked through soapy's blog. One of the main inspirations for this. Unfortunately it doesn't provide any info on what the base minis are if they are conversions or whether they are his own sculpts.
I also asked Gripping Beast if the Red Shadows heads were still available and they advised that they are not. :'(

Did you ask for "Red Shadows" specifically? I wonder if they may be more receptive to asking for something like "slightly unusual German WWII style heads with enclosed face-plates" since obviously no-one can produce Red Shadows stuff without a license, can they...? o_o

They are his own sculpts but they are the sculpts done through Gripping Beast as Woodbine (I think that's what it was called). I don't think the Muton figure was actually produced but the Red Shadows are the Woodbine WWII Germans with "WWII Advanced German Helmet" or something similar. The heads were available seperately, not as complete figures. It would be a real shame if they've been ditched.

@leonmallett
I quoted Soapy directly "There is even a sprue of 'experimental German helmets with clamshell face armour' available from the Beasty boys upon request for you Shadow fans."
After getting a good look at the Time lift Security minis from Crooked Dice, they might be a good start for The Black Major, Major Blood, and possibly Baron Ironblood.

This is the figure you need: ;)

I would love Cyber Zanzibar to be released. :(

For anyone thinking of doing a 40K army in Action Force style, I was thinking of using the Forgeworld Titan crew as Space Force:
I'm also thinking that the limited edition Pilot would look really good in Space Force colours.
The Forgeworld Taurus could work as one of the AF jeeps.

Hello,
Sorry for the thread-o-mancy but I have just received my Col. Zanzibar from ERM (lovely model :) I had intended to use him as Red Laser but he is scaled a little larger than the rest of my shadows which are based on Foundry and Artizan minis.
Therefore I decided to use him as Cobra Commander alongside “Storm Shadow” from Reaper. I have read this thread and am very interested in using the German Wehrwolf Half Squad by Victory Force, which can be seen at the link below, as cobra troopers:
http://www.victoryforce.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=VFM&Product_Code=034503&Category_Code=newwar
Unfortunately I cannot find any better pictures of these minis than the one on the VF site and I have no idea if they will scale well with Col. Zanzibar. Can anyone share some better pictures of the German Wehrwolf Half Squad troopers? Or even provide a scale shot of them with Col. Zanzibar?
Thanks

What a fantastic idea - I would love to play GI Joe indeed I have fond memories where in one comic Cobra Commander takes over a small town and the front cover had him ranting on about being more American than apple pie - make a great scenario the objectives being key places of infrastructure within the town such as the radio station etc as one would do in any well orchestrated coup.

Would any of our new heads help...

I started working on a Pulp era Cobra force. Here's Major Bludd:

I have started a blog about making your own GI Joe 28mm miniatures (for playing Necromunda with them). MY main resources are HeroClix miniatures. Pig Iron has some nice heads for sale. And various 40K bits come in handy for weapons. See: toco.be/blog

You called me out. Soon. I promise. I just back into Pulp.

Sorry about the threadomancy but was the colonel Zanzibar ever released?
-
Yes. You can find him at East Riding Miniatures or Hasslefree Miniatures.
