Title: Rainbow Six-like ruleset ?
Post by: sundayhero on January 16, 2012, 10:31:40 PM
Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone knows a miniature ruleset to simulate anti-terrorist/anti gang/CQB military action with miniatures ?

I know plenty of nice 15mm and 1/72mm (and other scale) miniatures wich can be used : swat, SAS, Spetnatz, foreign legion, us special forces, and of course, insurgents from diferent parts of the world, not speaking or urban riot crowd, etc...

I'm thinking about books and video games like Rainbow Six, movies like Tropa de Elite (brasilian BOPE), tv shows like Ultimate Force (great britain SAS), etc, etc...

Typical game scenarios should be hostages rescue, vip escort, elimination, recon, bomb clearing, enemy extraction, etc, etc...

Typical game scenery : anything from deep jungle camp to planes, offices and buildings,  urban environnement , etc, etc...Really interesting.

But for now, I didn't find anything concerning rules for that typical kind of game (well trained small combat groups vs terrorists or urban riots). The graal would be a fast paced ruleset (to simulate the very quick action) but realistic (realistic soldier loadouts and weapons, ways to simulate specialists like sharp shooters and stuff like that).

So....Any idea or suggestion ?

thanks!

Force on Force?

I'll second Force on Force. You can do small unit actions against larger Insurgent forces. Essentially "unbalanced" games actually work with this ruleset :)

I'll third Force on Force, it works very well for asymmetrical engagements. :)

I'll fourth FoF too... but I get the impression that something more 'in depth' was what was looked for, sort of 'Battlefield 3' on the tabletop, or a semi-RPG type set?

Yes, the "perfect" thing should be a ruleset with two levels :

1st level, "classic" skirmish, for exterior urban combat : commando taking position outside a building or favella, that kind of thing.

2st level, detailed semi rpg : special rules for snipers or explosives specialists, for example (not just extra range, but really special rules : wind and other weather behaviour, physical reactions like combat pressure, breath control after a run or climb, etc... ), real weapons rules (ammo count, rate of fire, power, diferent types of grenade, sight systems, etc...). After all, there must be a reason for commandos to use sometimes MP5 submachines guns instead of assault rifles, for example.

Rule for infiltration : if the commando move slowly, and use silencers, they cannot be discovered, in an opposite way, if they run quick using flashbangs, shotguns, etc... they can alert enemy.

Rule for "IA" crowd (riot, hostages, etc...) panic movement

Rules for experience and campaign gaming (veterans will be better than rookies)

I believe it would be very cool to play. Take a typical rainbow six situation : about 4-8 commandos, about 3 to 16 terrorists or criminals (bank hold up, for example).

Maybe I should try to make my own system ? Any ideas about a generic (and "open source" maybe) ruleset I should use ?

Rebel Minis has [irl=http://rebelminis.com/modernhavokpdf.html]Modern Havok

Rebel Minis is proud to announce our new 15mm modern skirmish game, Modern Havok.

Modern Havok is a fast paced set of skirmish rules for modern urban warfare. Designed for our 15mm modern miniatures line, these rules are based on the award winning Chain Reaction System by Two Hour War Games.

Players control gangs, law enforcement or even mercenaries in a bid to control the streets. The PDF even has 3 starting scenarios designed by Ed himself!

Modern Havok is a standalone game and a great way to get started in the Chain Reaction system.

Sounds like it'd fit the bill exactly :)

Flying Lead (http://ganeshagames.net/) by Ganesha Games appears to have what you want. Personalisation for your characters and an easily adaptable system. Or at least it looks that way, I have them, but haven't played them yet.

Or try Chain Reaction 3 (freely available here (http://www.twohourwargames.com/free.html)) and add your own rules for more "modern urbarn warfare" style.
