Title: By Fire & Sword: Lithuanian field hetman Gosiewski (14/4/14)
Post by: Anatoli on 22 January 2012, 11:14:45 AM
Received my order from Wargamer during the week so I'm super excited to finally get started. Polish dragoons will be up on the painting table first since this will be my only infantry unit for now, but Winged Hussars, Pancerni and Cossack style cavalry will follow.

Since this game and the models are rather obscure I figured I would write reviews for the boxed sets while I work my way through the lead pile. Since this is my first contact with miniatures from the Polish manufacturer "Wargamer" I paid extra attention to metal and casting quality, mould lines, poses, defects etc.

I'm happy to say that the models are very nice and pictures of a few painted stands will be up very soon.

Post by: Anatoli on 23 January 2012, 07:46:54 AM
Just started painting my first company for my "By Fire and Sword" Polish-Lithuanian army yesterday. These 3 stands were something of a test to try out some colors and get the feel of the sculpts. They did paint up fairly easy, experimented a bit with horseflesh - controlled vs a more "patched" approach to get more contrast and think I found a technique that I'll be using on the horses for this project.

My goal is to have the remaining 2 infantry and 4 cavalry stands painted up by this weekend. The dismounted dragoons are all trimmed and prepped, just need to do the same with the mounted dragoons. The bases are something of a improvised solution at the moment. Homemade 2mm thick plasticard bases, will probably use the same for the rest of this box as I just placed an order for mdf bases and don't know when they'll show up.

Anyways, more pictures on my blog:

Something I put together yesterday when I painted up the last dismounted dragoon stands. The mounted dragoons are painted the same way. There will be a related tutorial on painting horses posted soon as well.

You're my personal hero for bravely going into this game and letting me see what I'd be getting into if I took the plunge! It looks really really nice, and is in an area of history I find fascinating. Lovely paint jobs by the way!

Thanks Gibby :-)

Thanks again for the comments guys  :)

Well, the first out of two boxes painted up and ready - I will paint a few things in between before I return to finish the Dragoon company :-)
I figure I want a bit of everything for playtesting and showing how the game works for my friends and fellow gamers.

;) Sorry, I just had to write that.
Winged hussars, every miniature gamer’s wet dream, even for a space marine players. :D
Title: Re: By Fire & Sword: Cavalry command (30/1)
Post by: Anatoli on 30 January 2012, 03:13:39 PM
@WhiteKnight,
The models are 15mm from the "By Fire & Sword" miniature range, produced by the Polish manufacturers "Wargamer" who is also working on an English version of the "BY fire and sword" rules I have reviewed on my blog just before Christmas.

@Frontal Assault,

Most definitely. They are pretty much "essential" - being the elite of the cavalry they form a tiny part of any Polish or Lithuanian cavalry regiment. The box I have will give me 2 companies of 3stands each. I will paint Winged hussars after I finish a company of cossack style cavalry and "Pancerni" - both of which make up the backbone of the Polish cavalry.

@Engel LOL!  Too true, and a big part of why I was interested in this game and project in the first place. Even though I predict they will be the most time consuming unit to paint I still look forward to fielding them and ripping the enemy army a new one with their charge  ;D

A review of the cossack style cavalry boxed set is now up on the blog. This box has superb variation when it comes to rider sculpts which also have a very cool irregular look about them with their mixed clothing and weapons.

No, but I know of the game  :)
The title of the thread is based upon the English translation of the title for the rules for these miniatures. And that is in turn based upon the trilogy of novels by Polish writer Sienkiewicz  lol

Just about to start painting a company of Pancerni, in the meantime however I thought I could share a little info on how I painted my Polish cossack style cavalry. It's not a step by step tutorial, but I did write down what colors I used and how they were mixed etc on the different areas of the miniatures.

Last unit to be reviewed and painted before the Winged Hussars which I think everyone is looking forward to (me included :-D).

The Pancerni were actually really nice and fun to paint despite initially not having been my favorite Polish-Lithuanian cavalry unit.

The box had as good a variety of riders as the cossack style cavalry box had, that is 8 different riders including commanders and bannermen. And just like the previous box you get 18 cavalry miniatures, which makes 6 stands - which makes 2 full companies or 1 full squadron.

I've had zero time for painting due to an upcoming exam, but I'll be able to pick up my brushes again tomorrow. I did however manage to asseble, undercoat and basecoat my Winged Hussars and thought I could share info on the contents of the box in detail as it includes a few extra parts which would explain the slightly increased price tag.

The Winged Hussars finally painted up, after schoolwork and exam related delays and a Flames of War tournament in between. Wanted to make this guys look the part so it also took 2-3 times as long to paint them as it has done with my previous units. After all, I will most likely only field 2 companies/6 bases of these guys in the end and they are the elite and probably the best unit in the game.

I also took a few pictures of what's painted up so far, I'm halfway through my lead pile for this project. When the cavalry and dragoon regiment is painted up I will most likely add a regiment of mercenary infantry or infantry of any kind to get a change of pace from painting cavalry.

Flag and pennants are handmade and handpainted, regular paper brushed with PVA glue and then painted up.

Oooooo!  Nice toys.  I have a similar army using 20 year old Essex miniatures which are variable (ranging from very good to average) - these figs seem to have a lot more action about them and look like they would would match in - I'll give them a try.

.....and then I read your review of the rule book and started salivating!  Wow!  I'll be getting the english translation the moment it is published.

Good review - thanks.

I think the game has huge potential to be a hit here in Sweden. It's not often gamers get to play Sweden at the height of their power either.

Painted up my second Pancerni company yesterday which means I now have a complete small Crown regiment of cavalry.

I've also ordered some additional volunteer cavalry, infantry and light artillery to complete the 3 regiment requirement that is the minimum size for an army in this game. Hopefully they will arrive shortly after I have finished writing on my bachelor degree so I can paint them up quickly. It's been quite a lot of schoolwork preventing long painting sessions lately.

More pictures of the second Pancerni company and the whole cavalry regiment can be seen on my blog.

A small company of Polish-Hungarian infantry. These are among the infantry types of Polish character that can be fielded as divisional support as they only appeared in small numbers.

Wanted to start out by adding some of these guys before I buy a box of German/Swedish style mercenary Pike&Shote infantry. The Polish-Hungarians actually have pretty good combat capabilities, and may field cavalry obstacles when defending (which I will build from scratch). My intention is to use two companies to flank and protect my artillery battery.

Miniatures are Legio Heroica, while the flag is one of the flags I had left over from the Polish Dragoons boxed set by Wargamer.

Ordered some infantry and artillery guns from Legio Heroica a week ago to fill some gaps in my Polish-Lithuanian army.

The miniatures are very nice sculpts with very little flash and cast in good quality metal that is neither too hard or too soft. The customer service was also top notch so I really recommend this retailer.

I put a few more pictures of the blisters and two comparison pictures with my Polish Dragoons from Wargamer on my blog:

So nice! I haven't got my Cossacks done yet. I struggle to clean the flash off the riders as they're really quite delicate. Not that there's much, they're lovely figures. When's the English translation meant to be out again?

Sadly the English version seem to be delayed, no date is given but the original May release is probably pushed to the summer months. A couple of months ago I received roughly half of the English translation and they had translated all of the rules of the first half of the rulebook - the army list, scenarios and history part was left. Quality of the translation was very good and they said they pushed the date so that the English version was on par with the Polish language version.

I can say that it is worth the wait, but too bad about the delay. I think the game will be a smash hit once released in English.

Third out of four cavalry companies. Just one more to go and I have a complete 3 regiment strong army. Last company, the regimental command and the divisional general will follow shortly. Had hoped to have finished this project last week but my last week at school proved to be a lot busier than I had anticipated.

I've been working on the latest addition to my Polish-Lithuanian army for the past couple of days. A Pike & Shot regiment made up of "Old type" infantry to make up my Royal Guards regiment. Started painting the command base first to try out what colors I would use for the regiment and to hand paint the flag which always takes a bit of time. I'll post pictures of the complete unit tomorrow.

Another large terrain piece from Wargamer and their 15mm By Fire & Sword terrain range.

The windmill is a massive cast in one piece resin building that stands 4 stories tall. It comes with a little balcony entrance and separate windmill wings, the later requires a bit of steady hand and care to cut clean from the resin frame.

Army Painter Steppe Grass, I also use a mix of Woodland Scenics "fine turf", it's like a powder that I bought a couple of plastic containers of from Maelstrom games a while ago. Used it to make my game table surface and have used it for some basing on miniatures and terrain as well.

The Wooden Church is the latest addition to the terrain offered by Wargamer.pl for their game By Fire & Sword. I have previously reviewed and painted up a couple of their excellent pieces, you can find the links for those at the end of my review.

As usual the model has excellent wooden textures, authentic design to make it fit in with 17th century Eastern Europe and radiates a lot of character. Cast in resin the building itself is as always hollow so that you can leave the roof to be removed during games if you like. The By Fire & Sword rules to include rules of occupying and firing out of buildings and all the buildings in the BFaS terrain range are actually sculpted so that you will be able to fix the correct amount of bases into the building instead of having to calculate how many you can put inside.

Check the full review and a bunch of pictures of the parts in this kit over at my blog:

And here is the Wooden Church painted up and ready to be plundered by Swedes and other invading nations. The building, like any other from the Wargamer.pl range, pretty much paints itself. It doesn't require any effort to look good as it is well textured and allows for a great result with just a mix of drybrushing and washes.

Wish the pictures were better though, but the lightning here at home sucks for taking pictures of large objects - I will take better pictures of this tomorrow down at the club when I demo By Fire & Sword.

Andreas at my club got hold of some buildings suitable for By Fire & Sword and asked me if I would be interested in painting them up for him, the deal was I paint 5 houses and keep 2 of them.

I thought it was a good deal, and the buildings below are the ones I picked for myself. The decision to pick these two was rather easy, as I already have several large buildings from Wargamer I wanted some smaller houses for my own collection.

I kept the Wargamer manufactured peasant hut with pigsty and another medium sized (wealthy?) peasant building from an unknown manufacturer.

I have the Big Peasant Hut with Pig Sty as well and I wondered whether they forgot to pack a chimney, but from your model it really is just a hole in the roof, right?

Post by: Anatoli on 16 May 2013, 12:58:01 PM
It's indeed a hole in the roof for the poor people's dwellings.

I use Scorched Brown, Steeel Legion Drab, Bestial Brown, Yellow, Bone White, Devlan Mud wash and Khaki highlight for the wood. The roof is Scorched brown, with added Steel legion drab and Dark Sand.

It's just a matter of adding more colors to the mix and mainly drybrushing and washes overlaping each other.

A banner of elite cossack style cavalry, painted up for today's game where I'm going to use them in a Lithuanian list that can be found as a downloadable PDF from the Wargamer site (not translated yet though).

The whole list is made up of cossack style cavalry and dragoons alone. The drawback of being able to field a larger number of dragoons than usual is that they are quite reluctant to fight (and according to the historical description screwed over the cavalry by running away without a fight in a skirmish battle with the Muscovite troops).

The list includes 5 bases of elite cossack style cavalry, which should be interesting to try out. This is my first unit with shields, which serve to increase the armor save by +1 in close combat and against arrows/javelins.

Remembered that I had some pictures from a while ago when I delivered the commissioned buildings to Andreas at the club prior to one of our games of By Fire & Sword. I arranged them all to form a small village so we could see the amount of terrain we had and what it would look like if we played with everything. The buildings are a mix of Wargamer.pl and Total Battle Miniatures and are all in 15mm scale.

Second banner of elite cossack style cavalry for my Polish-Lithuanian army - and the last banner of this type of cavalry that I need and that am going to paint. All that remains for me to paint to get a complete Crown cavalry regiment is just one more banner of Pancerni (which are next in my painting cue). The elite cossacks will see action in the Lithuanian skirmish lists supporting Polish dragoons and reiters, but may from time to time make guest appearances in the Polish skirmish lists as well.

Looks top notch Alex!  I was wondering if the rules can scale to 28mm play?

I get that question from time to time, it will be hard but not impossible. However you will require a lot bigger gaming area than the 4x4 or 6x4 sized tables used for the 15mm ranges which are all in centimeters. Cavalry is very fast in this game and just turning centimeters into inches would make such units cross the table in one or two turns. Such movement rate would also make terrain placement very difficult since you would need very sparse terrain (probably less terrain than in 15mm games) else charges and movement become very difficult.

It really comes down to table size if you want to solve most of the problems that will arise, Unfortunately I don't think games have tables that are larger than 6x4 in most clubs or at home. I imagine you would need something like 6x6 if you want to play the skirmish battles in 28mm without making the troop density impossible to maneuver.

The BFaS range is good, models have a good amount of detail but aren't cluttered. The only thing worth mentioning is that you have to be careful with the swords of the riders/some infantry as they are on the soft side. I tend to place my riders that wave their swords about in the middle of the base or in a way so that exposure from the sides is minimal, especially if I want to form them into a nice line or transport them. Pikes, lances and flagpoles are all made out of brass wire which you get in the boxes/blisters (along with flags) so no risk bending or breaking those.

Ok.
Thank for your answer.
You say that they aren't cluttered, so they are quite static???
Yor pics are great.
You are right about the swords, many miniatures in this scale have the problem...

Best regards.

@Alejandro, I think there is a unit or two that can be considered to have static poses - but the majority of the range have nice living poses  :)

..

Second banner of spear armed Pancerni cavalry - and the very last company to be painted for my Polish Crown cavalry regiment which is maxed out to the limit and thus allows me to field 6 bases of Winged Hussars if I want to. Good times are ahead :-D

For those wondering how it may look on the table with three regiments of cavalry heading towards you in By Fire & Sword :-D

I took some army pictures as soon as I had painted up my latest banner of Pancerni cavalry to get a feel for the amount of cavalry I have painted so far (still waiting for Reiter’s to be added to the mix).

A lot more pictures on my blog:

Beautiful!  Just love those winged Hussars!

Are we still waiting for the rules to be published in English?  I haven't seen them advertised yet.

No you can already order them through regular retailers  :)
Northstar has the rulebook IIRC, you could also order straight from Wargamer.pl in Poland. Not sure what other retailers have it in the US / UK.

Finally the insane daytime temperatures seem to have passed here in Sweden and I was able to start painting again yesterday after a break that had lasted a couple of weeks.

This is one of the two historical commanders that are part of the Lithuanian Winged hussar skirmish list for By Fire & Sword. Figured I would start with Gantzkopf and follow that up with some reiter bases since I already have all the Winged Hussars and everything else for that list painted up (except for the commanding officer Wincenty Gosiewski).

You would think that after having painted 200+ cavalry miniatures you would go crazy painting even more cavalry - but painting a new type of cavalry such as the reiters is a nice enough break and change of pace. I figure the rest of the reiters will have elements of red and yellow on their clothing just like the command base.

The flag itself is hand painted and based upon a historical Lithuanian reiter flag which was lost to the Russians during the battle for Vilnius in 1655. I took some liberty with the border pattern though.

First 3 (out of 6 bases) with Lithuanian Reiter's armed with arquebus for my Polish-Lithuanian army. They will be a welcome addition on both skirmish and division level.

Last 3 bases of Reiters painted up, which means I can field a full squadron of them along with the historical commander Gantzkopf. These models are all painted in a very uniform look, which would perhaps not be historically supported. But I just wanted to paint the troops a bit different than my regular Polish units, and also wanted a change of pace from painting each rider in different colors in order to speed up the painting a little.

As a unit, Reiter's are ridiculously versatile when it comes to including them in army lists. At the moment I am able to field them as part of the regular, and the Winged Hussar, Lithuanian skirmish lists. I can also field them as a regiment to support my Polish division if I get another box of armored Reiter's in the future, for now I can opt to field them as divisional support units.

You can also use the models for Courland and the city of Gdansk skirmish lists. And I am pretty sure that they will be part of any of the upcoming Danish, Imperial and Brandenburg PDF lists - just need to get some armored Reiter's as well. But at the moment, and after having painted some 300 cavalry models, I am pretty tired of painting cavalry. I look forward to starting a Cossack skirmish force sometime next month (which is why I'm eagerly waiting for the remainder of my BF&S Kickstarter which includes Ivan Bohun who I will use as a Cossack skirmish commander :-D )

Anyway, more pictures of the last trio and pictures of the full squadron with command can be seen over at my blog:

Lithuanian field hetman Wincenty Gosiewski painted up and ready to lead the Winged hussar skirmish list tomorrow :-D

Really great miniature, painted up easily and looks awesome. I used him together with the contents of a regular Polish command blister, but the flag is custom made and hand painted.

Now I just wait for the Polish infantry blisters to arrive so that I can finish my Polish-Lithuanian army for the time being and start up a Cossack skirmish force next. More pictures over at my blog:

Great painting, Anatoli!

I've ordered three skirmish sets: Polish, Cossacks and Swedish...  I guess that I read Sienkiewicz a time too many when I was a teenager!  lol

Painted up the first base for my Royal city of Gdansk skirmish list  (all units will also be part of my regular Polish-Lithuanian army), the models for the Gdansk troops are really nice and make for great extra musketeer and reiter troops with a tad more irregular look to them - perfect to use for Courland as well as other western type armies/regiments.

For cavalry, 3 bases that makes a unit, it takes me 3-4 sessions of roughly 4-5 hours each. The same timeframe for twice the amount of infantry bases.

Am new to the forum but just read your entire thread...really impressive and doing great justice to this fascinating period of history...all f your painting has an excellent feel to it especially the irregular cavalry/cossacks - what are you using for uniform reference if I may ask ?.....thanks so much for sharing it all
