Title: Basing larger models

I jumped on the metal washer bandwagon a while ago.
What a great idea. They look good and they are cheap. 1 1/4 washer costs me around $0.14 U.S. a piece.

I have some cavalry, vehicles, and artillery models I want to base up on larger circular and square bases.

Any cheap ideas for basing options?

I have some very large (@ 2") washers that comfortable fit 28mm mounted models. You can get 3" wooden discs and a multitude of other sizes and shapes at craft stores like Michaels. I just glue a couple of thin steel bases to the bottom of them so I can transport them sith all of the steel washer-based stuff.

for the square bases :

try to find someone with access to a sheet cutter, buy a sheet of (ferro !) metal in a DIY and have it cut at your desired dimensions.
Mind you, large surfaces of metal sheet, even not so thick will make for lots of weigth to carry around.

I don't know anyone with a sheet cutter so I think I'll start out with my local craft store.

I always feel like someone's gonna spot me in there though and take away my man card!  lol

If your looking to have the bases stick to magnetic stock in your army tote trays, you can use the raised cav plastic base and glue finishing nails to be flush with the bottom. The go right into the casting slots on the underside.

I got custom laser cut plywood cavalry bases from Fenris Games. Pill shaped, with rounded edges the same dimensions as my washers, so it's 25 mm wide and 50 mm long with half circle endings.
