Title: 15 feet of post- apocalyptic highway
Post by: Papa Spanky on January 30, 2012, 06:39:22 PM
I finished up my road for my Car Wars / apocalyptic  games. It turned out ok, but it could have been better. The problem? Basing. I used foamcore instead of MDF. Ive been mking terrain for 16 years now, I know better. Oh well, maybe Ill redo them someday...

Brilliant!

Do you have any crossings or junctions for it, or is it just one long Mad Max like stretch into infinity? (Not that that's a bad thing, mind!)

Needs a truck stop at the kink in the road, crying out for a '76' gas station or a diner I reckon.

Modhail: One long streeetch. In the future if I do a redo I will add a junction, but for now its Mad Max infinity road all the way!

Commander Vyper: There will be *something* there when the game is set up. Be it a diner or rocks or a bearded lady depends on the game being played.

How'd you get the broken pavement effect? I'd like to do something similar...

Its thin rolled cork. (1/16)* corrected* I cut it to length and finished to the point just before weathering. Then I tore it, tore chuncks from it. I arranged them correctly with a slight gap and glued them down. ( color the edges first) You will have to shave off extra on the ends thats created from the gaps. some of the others "cracks" are just painted on to give the effect of that ashphalt repair goo they use.
Send me another reply if theres something I didnt explain correctly.

Hobby Lobby has some, but its not on thier website. Hit or miss if they have the 1/16" in stock. Ace Hardware will do a ship to store and thats originally where I got mine from. However they dont seem to be carrying it in the 24" wide x 48" rolls anymore, only 12"x 36". I also found the larger roll on amazon. oh and I edited my original response, its 1/16" thick.

Those roads look great. I also really like the Builder from the Dollar Tree container. Its cool the way the 2nd floor interior is exposed when the top lifts off.
