Title: Thinking of getting into SE. Questions...
Post by: styx on February 09, 2012, 04:30:52 PM

This may be a few months out before I can expend any money on a new game but I am interested in Strange Aeons and was looking for some advice. My income has been limited as my wife and I are on a debt crusade to make our lives better.

That said, what would you suggest as starting models to consider purchasing?

How many Threshold agents should I consider a good “pool” of models to buy? What are some good items to make sure is on the models? Tommy Guns and Pistols seem to be popular.

Same for the Lurkers? What is a good “pool” to consider? I was looking at some cultists, fishman and perhaps some other odd items.

On paper I have something like up to 12 agents and perhaps double that in Lurker models depending on money or at least a spending plan. I figure this would give me a good pool of models to share with others that are interested in playing the game and be able to play a variety of games as well.

Feedback Welcome….

8-10 cultists with various weapons, and a few of the various tougher lurkers- say 3 zombies, a couple ghouls, fishman or two, serpantman or two, one nightgaunt, one conglomerate. To start you really don't need to buy lurkers that cost higher than 10 points, especially if you are in control of how powerful the threshold team becomes. For the threshold team I would get one guy with smg, one with rifle, and one with shotgun. Then get a few more you think look cool. Six or so is probably good to start. I've painted more figures for this game in the last two months than I have painted in the last two years, but I'm a Lovecraft nut. Fun game. We've got some really nice terrain going right now; the board looks good and is getting positive comments at the FLGS.

Cool, thanks for the advice. Looking forward from others to see their views. I don't have the rules yet but I was looking at the bundle of rules and the 3 model packs. Then looking at other companies as well as Mike's range to expand upon.

As for Lovecraft, I am a huge fan from long time. Played COC RPGs in High School and College (mainly a GM) (Both old and now rules) as well as I did a report in college for one of my papers in American Lit...the prof really gave me props for my choice and analysis of his works. Plus I have on my desk at work "Cthulu for President. Why choose the lesser evil?" with him standing in front of an american flag with the nixon fingers out. Plus the stuffed Cthulu is right in front. Only two people at work understand what it was....gamers both of them. The rest I had to explain it to, but one already came back and said she got an email joke with a Cthulu reference in it...

This miniature version looks fun and interesting. Sadly, not sure how many people I could rally to play around here. People are very set in their ways of Warhammer, locked in Historical specific games and Warmachine/Hordes.

I just don't want to jump into this too deep and buy something I can't use or not have enough for a decent variety.

A couple of years ago I got into Pulp games, but I found the terrain and miniature options too large.  Strange Aeons has a simple and fast rulebook, you only need a few miniatures, and the terrain possiblities are endless.  Great book and Canadian to boot!

Yea, well I have a huge and still growing collection. May be a good idea to talk about saving money with SE with wise shopping techniques.

The good thing about games such as Strange Aeons is that you only need a couple of minis to get started. The bad thing is that you WANT a horde of miniatures for every occasion, for every profile and of every flavor. This problem evens out down the road if you pick up more rulesets that allow you to "recycle" miniatures. At the moment my Gothic Horror collection really shines as a golden example as I started out buying miniatures for Malifaux, then used them for Strange Aeons, now they double for Empire of the Dead - and probably will work they way into Chaos in Carpathia down the road.

I try to steer my habits into that direction if I can, more sets of rules - same amount/kind of miniatures.
