Hi all
If anyone would like to check out some sword and sorcery skirmish rules (http://andyhoare.blogspot.com/2012/02/get-girl-kill-baddies-friday-update.html) I've been working on, I'd be most grateful for any feedback at all. The file is on my blog, and the opening few pages contain an explanation of the basic principles, who they're aimed at etc.

Many thanks!

I'll have a read of the rules once I have finished for the day later tonight :)
-
Probably the best titled rule set I've seen in a while. lol
I guess to download the rules I need a Yahoo account or something?
-
You click on the title in the first paragraph to get to the rules.

Thanks skachman,
You click on the title in the first paragraph to get to the rules.
But I tried that.
I get redirected and asked to create account or enter a password. :'(

Google/Youtube account.
Glancing at the rules, it feels a lot like the Silhouette system. Incidentally, last summer I was tinkering around with adapting it for solo dungeons...

I guys - I wasn't aware you had to have a Google account to view Google Documents, I'll have a look into hosting it some other way (I should have known it was too simple!)
Despite being a gamer since the mid '80s and working in the industry for a decade I haven't heard of the Silhouette system! I'll have to have a look now just out of curiosity :)
All the best

Right then, I've moved the file from Google Docs to Dropbox, so hopefully it should appear on a browser page without the need to log in now. Let me know if there are still any issues.
Many thanks

Looks interesting but i havent got any fantasy figs painted up as yet. All Splintered light and Copplestone 15mm in the lead pile for the moment. Still, i will have a read through in due course.

I'll have a look at thoses soon. Unfortunately my job keeps me kind of busy theses days but I'll try to get a good look at them these days. Thx for posting.

Ok, I see the comparison with Silhouette now, in that I'm aiming for a set of core mechanics that can be applied across genres. I'm not doing exactly that, because I wouldn't release a set of core, generic rules that I'd expect to work in all genres. The compromises you'd have to make to a set of rules that covered (for example) both WW2 and old school dungeon crawls would work against the subtleties of both. Rather, I'd want to present a complete set of rules for each setting, keeping as many aspects familiar as possible but changing what needed to be changed to play up the unique elements of each specific genre.
For example, if I was playing a mythos type game I'd want rules for insanity and the likes, and if I was playing WW2 I'd want a good orders system. I wouldn't want both types of rules in both settings though.
Does that make sense?
-
Yeah, it does. I completely agree with you here.

Actually, I was going more with the mechanics. All dice rolling 1s being a fumble, all 6s being a success, stats being simple modifiers with zero being average.
-
Ah, gotcha. I'll give the rules a look out of curiosity.
-
@JN: 1s and 6s? So, 2/3 of your unmodified rolls would be outliers in Silhouette. I wonder if D10s might have been better...?
@AH: Downloaded! Cheers!
-
Thank for clarifying. A friend of mine has been bugging me to start a Google for over a year.

Only if you're unskilled. The average character has Skill 2, which means they roll 2d6. Legendary characters have skill 4 or 5...
-
Ah, that makes more sense.

Bit the bullet, created a Google account, and downloaded the rules.
Nice miniatures. I like the traditional Sword and Sorcery theme. :-*
I just glanced over the rules for now and there are some very interesting concepts.
-
Well you didn't need to since I moved the file to DropBox, but its great to hear you have :)
Thanks for your kind words on the miniatures. I can't afford to fill the book with loads of custom art (though the art internal I have was very kindly donated, and I got mate's rates on the cover as I used to work with the artist!) so I'm using photography instead of illustration.
Once I have a few more miniatures painted I'll do a playtest battle report, and post it here and on the blog.

Downloaded. Thank you.
I'll check the rules asap, but tomorrow morning I'll have to travel for a week.
Hope to post some opinions after that.
Waiting to see an AAR, as the rules seem interesting.
Thanks for sharing.

Just updated my blog with some revised rules and a playtest report of sorts. Many thanks for the feedback I've had so far, and keep it coming :)

Nice AAR.
Very evocative and moody. I was instantly reminded of old Creepy magazine covers. :-*
Hope you don't mind but I linked a pic.

No problem at all, thanks for your kind words! I'm finishing up on the bases for the subhuman horde by the way, so I'll post a pic here if anyone's interested.

I'm interested. :)
-
Defenitly interested :)
I hope to find time too take a look at your rules, but it might take a while :(
-
I'm having to stay away from reading them until I have finished my own as I don't want to intentionally use someone else's system.

I know that feeling well! (I've just been commissioned to project manage the writing of a new historicals game, so I think its time to separate my mind into several autonomous shards!)

I'm interested. :)
Just finished the four bases worth of Mantic Ghouls (to serve as regressed subhuman cannibal types). Here's a shot of one base, and all four can be seen in the Miniatures Gallery section of my blog.

They look even nicer based! :-*
Fantastic work.
The "regressed subhuman cannibal types" theme is both in line with R.E Howardian themes as well as Lovecraftian themes.
I must stay focused... I'm doing Post Apoc right now. Must stay focused...

Just finished this, its a Reaper 'Faceless Horror' and the girl is a Hasslefree Taxxis.

Truly gruesome, Andy. (The horror, not the girl, that is.)

Shoggoths now!
I love it. :-*

A very quick job on Reaper's Demonic Ape (or I'll never get through everything!)

Another quicky, this time a Reaper Giant Snake

There are plastic trees in the background! ;)
Anyway, I'm going for a more 'old school' look, and as Reaper are especially good at that, that's where a lot of my stuff is coming from (plus Ed was nice enough to supply me with some toy soldiers for the project!)

Couple more, both from Reaper and suitably 'mythos' for an old school S&S game :)

Hi guys
I've updated the blog with an updated version of the rules if anyone's interested :)
http://andyhoare.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/updated-get-girl-kill-baddies-are-go.html
I've some some great feedback from a couple of members of LAF, proving this forum is undoubtedly one of the most excellent hobby forums on the interwebs, so many thanks!
All the best
