Title: Finished Town
Post by: Rob_Jedi on 11 February 2012, 11:17:41 AM
I've posted some WIP shots of these in the past. I got a bit of help to get the whole town finished to go on display at the recent CANCON. This will be a bit of an image flood. I've been working on these for over a year or more now and I'm really happy to have them all done. Although now I want to design a church and some extra buildings and make a bigger board to put them all on cause they really crowd up this 2x2 foot board. For those wanting to know who makes them they are all from http://www.aetherworks.com.au/ (http://www.aetherworks.com.au/) Most of the models in the shots are from Malifaux with the occasional Dead Lands as well and a truck from I'm not sure, excuse the lame plastic horse in the 1st few shots.

I would really like to play with such an old west town. The buildings are top notch. How did you create the shops signs ?

Not certain, but looking on the Aetherworks site I *think* they are pre-made laser-cut signs.

Wow.
Some of the finest western building I have seen for awhile.
My hat is off to all those who spend the extra time to go the extra mile.
Really outstanding.

To OP Rob_Jedi: airbrush or hand-painted/dry-brushing washes etc.?

Great looking town, I can see you having some great battles there.

Really like the frame for the under construction house. Was that scratch built or a kit?

Best use of lasercut models I've seen. They seem to avoid all the pitfalls that usually make similar items stand out as such (unrealistic joins for the walls, general flatness). I may have to get some of these. ;D

Greetings

gosh  :-* are those pictures gorgeous.

If there is one thing which disturbs me a little, then it is the fact every building is the same height
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/Rob_Jedi/WesternTerrain/IMG_8760.jpg)
Even the signs have the same width and height. A little diversity would have been great. And perhaps one or two two or more stories buildings. But that's just me.   ;) :D

Your work is still outstanding and fabulous.
Thank you a lot for showing
Jo

Thanks for all the compliments everyone, glad everyone likes it. Also thanks for the feedback, keep it coming.

To answer a few questions:

The signs are all lasercut and they can make custom ones too. Fair point they are all the same size though, may try mixing that up a bit.

The under construction building is also a kit.

The painting was mostly all by hand. I did try to airbrush the saloon a bit but then went over it with washes. The undertakers was done by my friend and had the main colour section airbrushed in. My method was more lots of washes and dirty shading then paint in the trim and drybrush that a bit before more washes and lining all the panel lines. You can see lots of WIP stuff on my blog

The all the same height thing is one of the drawbacks of using kits and trying to have them fit in the same style packaging I guess, though there are 4 different types of 1 story building, the flat roof one has a shorter frontage so it can mix it up a bit, plus there is a stepped front on another one.

Glad the under construction building is so popular. That was my most recent design. I figured every town could use one. Here's the kit page LINK (http://store.aetherworks.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=176_179_181&products_id=5353)

To rob_jedi, can you explain what you did for the buildings with the black/dark grey (pitch? I'm not an architectural historian LOL!) roofs?
Title: Re: Finished Town
Post by: Rob_Jedi on 21 February 2012, 01:25:15 AM
Sure the dark roofs are just the mdf painted black and drybrushed through a couple greys with some strips of wood added on top painted and drybrushed like the rest of the wood parts. They are meant to represent roofs covered in tar paper.

Simply spectacular!  :o  :-*

And your choice of colors for the buildings makes this town a very prosperous place to live (or die  ;)).

Thanks for sharing.
