Hey everybody, how are we all keeping? :D
With little Rochie only three months away, I'm faced with the realisation that day long games of tabletop butchery are soon to be either a fond memory or a once in a blue moon luxury :D
So, a quick trip Ganesha Games, a ridiculously small amount of money spent and an email later, and my fantasy skirmish project is born! My plan (for now) is to put together a few warbands for a fantasy campaign set in an as yet unnamed region, as well as slowly (very slowly) picking away at my Chaos army for warhammer fantasy 3rd edition. So far I have one warband nearly finished, and am re-basing my favourite miniatures from my different armies to take along for the ride.
So, first up is a goblin tribe;
The whole group, led by the enigmatic (and highly vicious) Gaffer (the one in the fur coat)
Just a bit of a close up to show the skin tone - as popular as green goblins are, I by far prefer a more fleshy colour scheme, as it gives more room to play around with different skin tones, and that's always a good thing! :)
With this model, I wanted something with a bit of speed to support the warband, but didn't want to use the gw wolves, as I wanted unique models rather than a bunch of the same monopose mounts, so after an expedition up the lead mountain, I came up with four Kroot hounds, and the old metal wolf riders fit on with the bear minimum of faffing about - result! :D
I'm thinking of calling them Quill-Beaks, but I'm open to suggestions!
The premise of the warband is a roving group of bandits/trappers who use the Quill-Beaks to run down larger prey as well as for forward reconnaisance.
There's more to come, but I don't want to open proceedings with a massively long first post, and if I showed everything at once, you won't come and visit, will you? ;)
All C&C is most welcome, so rip into em!
Cheers guys! :D
-
Great stuff - using the Kroot Hound as a mount is really clever and effective.
-
Cheers Andy! To be honest, it was completely accidental that I ended up using them, I had a few ideas on what to use, but once I came across the Kroot hounds I knew I was on to a winner :)
I still have regular wolf riders in my big army, it's just they didn't give enough variety for my liking, but for anyone intersted, this is what they look like;

Those are really cool. Fantastic paint jobs.
I love seeing goblins in natural flesh tones instead of the usual green.
It gives them a folkloric quality.
-
As an admitted Goblin Guy, I've got to say your Goblins are TERRIFICALLY WELL DONE...the skin colors are EXCELLENT, as are the Wolves & your color choices in general. Using the Kroot Hound as a mount was sheer genius...never admit to an "accident", it's termed "inspiration". I look forward to more of your WONDROUS works...I have a vague idea what the Chaos Lads will look like.

I thought you might have an inkling of the direction my chaos army's taking Al! ;) (on that note, the last of the neccessary grown up stuff's been finally sorted, I'll be in touch very soon!) How about instead of "accident" we call it a "fortuitous sequence of events that led to inspiration?" :D
And thank you Aggro84 for the positive feedback, I've really enjoyed looking through your threads the past couple of days, looking forward to more!

Nice wolf or two there!
Love the 'Quill-Beaks' though. I am going through a pile or two to drop on eBay and came across two of these - going to keep them now!
I do like 'flesh' goblins and the old GW Fire goblin was my favourite species.
Keep us up to date please.
-
Lovely Gobbo's, Rochie!
:-*
I know opinion is split on the 'correct' skin tone for Goblins, but I must admit I am on your side of the fence, fleshy tones all day for me.
You may not be so keen on the wolf riders due to their lack of variety, but considering you are not so keen, you have done a cracking job on them.
Joining the queue on the excellent Kroot Hound idea. Inspired!
Very much looking forward to the next installment........
-
Cheers guys! Next installment you say? bit of chaos do ye?

All of them need rebasing and shields doing, but I'm basing the larger stuff on English 2p coins, and I'm running low on the small supply I managed to gather together when I was visiting the in laws in Yorkshire over the christmas... looks like a return journey might be on the cards! :D
Oh, and a quick question...

What's a fire goblin look like? I'm not familiar with it and for some reason I feel like I need to own one... ;)

That's a FINE looking Band of Beasty Boys. The One Eyed Fellow with the pistol, in addition to being OH-SO-COOL, is a mini I don't think I've ever seen before. All are VERY WELL DONE!

Cheers mate! :D The nurgle champ with the one eye and the monkey arm is my favourite miniature. Ever. I bought him years ago when gw had their great lead sale with some birthday money, and he has appeared on the table in every game I've ever played with my chaos army(and I use them with alarming regularity), and has been dipped and repainted more times than I can remember :D
-
yeah! I love oldschool project!
Very nice minis choice Rochie and splendid paintjob on them. Realy like it!
Chaos rules but what a gobbos crew! :-*
Keep going mate! What's next? :P
cheers
Faber
-
Cheers Faber! What's next eh? Well with the Goblins and Chaos guys dirtying up the place and lowering property prices, I thought that I should start introducing some order to proceedings, and show you a couple of adventurers, I intend on having a good few more of these, it's just a matter of coming across suitable models :)
and a rear view showing the shield design, still not set on it, may change it if the mood takes me;
There's Orcs and chaos dwarfs to come, I'll try to get on it later ;)
-
that is what I call a quick reply! :D
Yeah! Love the dwarf! Very nice shield too, I would not change it...maybe only a little retouch. The design itself is cool! Keep going mate!
-
Lovely stuff - I especially like those beastmen. Nice "realistic" tones on the Gobbo's too. 8)
Good work on the shield - gives him a kind of Mongolian/Chinese barbarian feel.
-
The fire goblins date from an old White Dwarf (270 ish) and I only have a clip now:
It was the idea of red / yellow splotched one that did it for me :-*
I started a blue one many moons ago (Viktor from HF) but he needs to be stripped and done again (yes I know its his back):
I do remember they had white ones but they left me cold lol

Cheers mate! The shield came about because of the model itself, the old citadel easterlings have a really strong mongolian vibe, so I used my rudimentary google-fu to find an image that would suit the model rather than the old faithful heraldry over a bright primary colour route

AH!! I remember them now! Loved the Dust goblins from that article too :D Now that I look at it, that's not a bad scheme to try out, bloody hate those plastic gobbos though, maybe it'd look good on the Redbox Bonebacks, couple of them would make really nice henchmen/bodyguards for the Gaffer :)
Lovely work on that cloak too, must have a look at the HF gobbos again too.... Bloody hell, I've started this project to downscale and I'm still making a shopping list!! ::)
-
Great figs Rochie, and bloody nice painting as well! Really like it!
-
Some really nice minis you've got there and with great paintjobs to match. Love the goblins especially, but then again who doesn't?
Yeah playtime will take a hit after the arrival of your little 'un, but you'll still find time as it'll help you keep sane!

Cheers Phreedh, I'm quite chuffed you like them, seeing as how it was your fantasy thread along with a couple of others that started all this in the first place! :D

lol Hopefully mate, although I think I'll be better entertained by the baby than by a bunch of little metal men!
Here's some orcs I've dug out, forgive the motley collection of bases, they're in progress, I promise!

Again, very nice work. I really like your color choices. :-*
You really breathed new life into these old miniatures (which I actually prefer more often than not).

Superb work and the orc with the two swords is one of my favourite minis of all times,
Duncan

You're becoming prolific. The Heroes & now the Old Kind-of-Green Guys look SUPER. All are VERY WELL DONE!

Cheers guys! :D

This is actually a backlog of stuff I've been at for the past couple of weeks, things may slow down, be warned!! :D
Mate of mine was visiting last night, gave me the new plastic Nurgle lord from GW as a trade for some skaven I'd given him, he's actually a really nice model, very little clutter and big flat areas to practice my blending on :) I made a start on him, and have decided to keep him square based (for my chaos army), and possibly pick up a second one to use in the skirmish games as part of my chaos warband. Anyway, I'll post the results as and when I get them done, but for now, here's some Chaos Dwarfs, the real ones, before the big hat fashion craze took off.....

Yeah! Marauder rocks, as always. Lovely dark stunties! :-*
I'm curious to see the Nurgle Champion when finished...it's a real beauty. I'll buy one, I know :'(
BTW, I know I'm pretty heretic saying this but...I prefer square bases. I play skirmish game with square bases and I have never had any problem. Plus, you can properly and easily play warhammer et similia with the same models.
-
COOL! Some Old Friends...you did a nice job bringing the Lads to life. I must admit liking the preBabylonian, Funny Hat Chaos Dwarfs better than their latter day Brethren...different strokes & all that. VERY WELL DONE!

I've been agonising over this since the start of the project to be honest, I've been swapping them from base to base every so often to try and make a final decision, but I just seem to be drawn more to the look of the circular ones, I've been thinking of trying to do something like Captain Blood's done with the movement trays for his WoTR collection, but I'm still trying to get my head around how to go about it cheaply and easily, so far I've been using the Lord of the Rings trays, but they're too big for 5cent coins, and JUST too small for English 2p's... >:(

Cheers buddy! :D I used to love the big hats, but the further I slipped into the old RoC stuff the more the older stuff took precedence! I've another bunch of these to get on with too, bought twenty of em off a guy I used to work with along with a mint copy of 2nd ed Blood Bowl for a sinfully low sum about two years ago, and only just gotten around to doing something with them ::)
-
Love the new additions, Rochie!
:-*
(Well new since I last posted! ;) )
Those Orcs are from a period where just about every Citadel figure had great character, and these are no exeption.
I also agree with you about the Chaos Dwarfs. Those were so much better than the Chimney-Heads!
Every single one was an individual, and even though I am selling a few off, I have kept a few for future use in Mordheim Chaos warbands.
Old school still rocks! 8)

Wow, nice shield there!
Regarding the orcs, care to share your method for their skin? They look really good, and pretty much exactly what I'd want to do myself with my rather hefty orc collection.

Cheers pal!
My skin recipe is basically;
Black undercoat
Basecoat gw Graveyard Earth(nice and thin, it usually needs two or three coats)
Highlight 50:50 basecoat and gw Rotting Flesh
Highlight Rotting Flesh
Extreme highlight gw Bleached Bone (just on the very tips of ears, nose etc)
Glaze with Green Ink (I use the really old gw Orc Flesh Wash, but Thraka Green pretty much does the job)
- The glaze is literally green tinted water, two or three coats just tints the flesh with a green hue -
Gw Baal Red ink in the eye sockets and bottom lip
Gw Leviathan Purple ink in on top of the red wash, try to just get it running in the deep recesses
Hope that helps!
-
Lovely Chaos Dwarfs - that shield is brilliant - genuinely creepy! 8)
Might pinch that Orc flesh recipe for some more Tolkien friendly Orcs I've got in the paint queue! ;)

Thanks! I still have an old pot of orc flesh wash, might take it out for a spin. =)

Thanks! I still have an old pot of orc flesh wash, might take it out for a spin. =)
Just make sure to water it RIGHT down, I didn't initially... I could have been arrested for the language I used...
Anyway, another update, this time Talisman. I had a crack at a thread detailing this project last year, but it petered out pretty quickly as I had a hell of a lot of "green"skins to paint over the summer, but now that I'm shelving my armies in favour of smaller projects, Talisman got its time in the sun once more!!
I've changed the bases I was using to 30mm round ones, because I like doing fancy bases and these give me more room to play with.
The colour schemes were all very much inspired by (and in some cases directly ripped off from ;)) Stone Cold Lead's Talisman minis on his blog, so a big thank you to him for saving me the hassle of trying to lift a colour scheme from the original character cards!! :D
here we go!

Comments/Criticisms most welcome! :D

This is great, really like the way you underlined their profession by adding specific details to their bases. Just lovely.
-
Nice collection of old GW minis!
They used to have so much character.
-
OH BABY! You got some of the OH-SO-COOL Oldies...you did them all up WONDERFULLY. WELL DONE!
-
These are o so nice!!! While Julie Guthries Grenadier and Tom Meiers Ral Partha sculpts from that "era" are so much better in proportions and detail, these are just oozing atmosphere and are a joy to paint.
You did a great job on them! :-*
-
Marvellous, they are quite lovely and the work on bases is just great. I really love the mad witch and the noble man. :-*
-
Great stuff there. Really like that you've gone for the colour schemes off the game cards. A bold move considering some of the colours used in the artwork. I did a bunch of these for a client many years ago and they were great fun to paint.
-
:-* :-* :-*
Absolutely fantastic, Rochie!
I had a hankering to do a Talisman collection, those old sculpts are just great.
So full of character that works really well in the context of the damn awful game!
That was the reason the idea didnt get off the ground- I hate the game!
The miniatures are great, though, and your paintjob really does them justice.
And those bases........ ;D
-
Cheers everybody! :D
Stone Cold Lead; The one I had the most trouble with so far is the soldier, orange purple and green are a proper **** to tie together without it looking too fruity, and I've still to add the bright yellow shield!!! :? And like I said, it was your commission work that helped immesurably with the project, only problem is, I've another 12 to do, and I've to go it alone with them! ;D
Aggro84; They're an absolute joy to paint mate, but bloody expensive to track down >:(
WelfVIII and Mason; The bases are a (loose)visual guide to where the models start on the board, starting to run out of ideas for the city style bases thogh, there's only so many ways to pimp flagstones ;)
DeafNala; Cheers again buddy, I don't know if you noticed, but your mushroom campaign is spreading, couldn't resist sticking some on the Barbarians base :D
And I think it's a cracking game, so there :P
:D
-
The soldier is a tricky one as far as the colours go. Similar issue with the assassin (green and magenta I recall). Good luck with the soldier's shield. I somehow managed to freehand it and haven't done anything that complex since! Wish the models were cheaper (it's not as if there aren't plenty on Ebay) to pick up as I'd love a full set and another crack at them.

I've managed to pick up a couple fairly cheaply through blind luck, but for the most part it's a pain in the bum, I only need the dwarf and warrior to complete the first set for example, but I've had to bow out of nearly a dozen auctions since last year because of the price of the buggers. They come up fairly regularly, it's just a case of hoping there isn't a big interest in them that particular week!! ;)
As for that shield... I have it sat in front of me since yesterday, and just can't bring myself to put a brush to the bugger yet ::)
-
Right, now that real life's stopped sticking the boot in, I've had some time to paint some goblins for a commission, camera's being a sod, so forgive the dodgy photos! :)

-
OH BABY...more Goblins & VERY COOL ones at that! All three of the Lads painted up TERRIFIC, but I must admit having a particular fondness for The Archer. VERY WELL DONE!
-
wow love those OLD school minis!!! great job! :o :o :o :-* :-* :-*
-
I'm really bored with the typical GW green skin Goblins.
I really like those miniatures though. :-*
Great paint jobs and color choices!
-
Tons of beautiful eye-candy on this thread. Absolutely fantastic paint work. I too prefer the flesh tones to the GW green option.

I think they're citadel mate, but to be honest you're better off asking our very own Binmann, cos they're his, I'm just his paint monkey at the minute :D There's more of these to come, but with little Rochies imminent arrival(two days if all goes to schedule!!!) I can't seem to get the time to get the pics sorted :?
And thank you to everyone else for your comments!!

Great minis, and great painting! :-*
They just don't make them like they used to.... Those old figures simply ooze personality.

Very fond of the one on the left, the one to the right looks a bit like William Hague.
