Hello all,
My big Gaslight project for 2012 is to refight the final battle from the film Avatar but done in Gaslight/VSF style!
The battle will instead be set on Venus and the Parrotmen will take the place of the Na'vee.
The "bad guys" will be played by a strange alliance of brits and Prussians.
The game will be a public participation game at the Melbourne Little Wars day in May.
So I have gone crazy on ebay and picked up a heap of Kroot, Knarloc and greater Knarlocs to make my Na'vee parrotmen.
I also picked up some GW High Elf dragon wings, tail bits etc off ebay so I can convert some knarloc into flying Knarloc for the flying creatures in the film.
I hope to post pictures soon.
Cheers
Fuzzy :)
-
That sounds awesome! Looking forward to some pictures.
-
Excellent!
Hope soon is real soon. ;)
Very interested in how you approach and make the flying creatures especially.
-
Yes, pictures please!

Chris Palmer, one of the GASLIGHT authors has been running Venus games for a while. In fact, we played one yesterday at club night. See a picture here: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vJgsoK4K9h0/Tq77dCLCgRI/AAAAAAAABFw/Dk8LDg7JMv0/s1600/IMG_7961.JPG
Everyone concentrates on Mars, so the Venus games are an interesting diversion.

Cool idea.
Looking forward to the progress pictures.

Good to see the French holding their line. I've just finished my final unit of 3 Legion Extraterrestrial for Venus. Now I'm painting additional units to support them on the plains of Mars.
-
I'll be keeping my Arabs shelved for this one, but would you be interested in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen making an appearance Fuzzy?
-
LOEG? No doubt they will be defending the rights of the oppressed Na'vee parrot people :D

Sounds more like a job for the Magnificent Seven. ;->=
Really looking forward to this, as well. Never saw the movie, but the images I've seen suggest this should be of awesome scale.
Will there be steam conveyance walkers (exoskeletons)? Carrying big a** knives?
Now that I think on it, Venus is usually assumed to have thick jungles populated by large reptilians. Given the same actor is in both, you could always bleed in a bit of Terra Nova. lol
Everyone concentrates on Mars, so the Venus games are an interesting diversion.
Fair's fair, Buck. Venusian Parrotmen have long been a staple of this list, along with Selenites, fishmen, Pelucidarans...
Now, the Venusian Amazons seemed fresh, ahem, to me.
It's horse-blindered thinkers such as myself who are totally focused on Martian flyers. :D
Unless, if I ever get those GI Joe M.O.L.Es converted to a subterranean train...
And, the VSF terror fish...
And...
Doug
Edit: Aha! I've haven't considered Jovians!
-
Yes there will be aerial conveyances a plenty. Balloons, zeppelins, steam gyrocopters, aeronef and for the parrotmen, flying repitles and dirigibles.
and that's just the aerial forces! :D
I'm painting some kroot troopers right now and hope to post pictures soon.
Cheers
Fuzzy.

The Navee Parrotmen warhost assembles!
The preparation for my display game at Little Wars 2012 in Melbourne continues.
The first troops off the paint table are the Parrotmen tribesmen. These will soon be joined by mounted parrotmen and flying Parrotmen!
The painting was quite simple. I undercoated them all with Army painter Crystal blue. Dry brushed the body with a lighter blue shade. I then painted all the equipment and then applied the strong tone army painter dip. After the matt varnish I flocked the bases and they're finished.

I have also started work on the floating islands. They are painted but I'll put up some pictures once I have glued on vegetation etc.

Fantastic job!!
-
Yes! Beautifully done!
-
Nice work on the parrottmen. Its funny how the concept has become a VSF wargames standard.
So now for the parrotmen quiz question : Who originally came up with the Parrottmen concept?
-
Very nice work on those Parrot men chaps!
-
Very nice job, I like them.
How are you doing your flying Parrotmen? I've got some put aside which I keep meaning to start on.... I'm going for flying fox style wings. Essentially leather/skins tied on at the wrists and ankles, probably connected to a belt too.
So now for the parrotmen quiz question : Who originally came up with the Parrottmen concept?
I know! I know!
-
genius!
I've always wnated to use 40mm plains indians painted in blue tones for the Na'vi! =)
-
Awesome job on the Parrotment! :-*
I have a box of them and I was planning to paint them in the same basic paint scheme.
I know! I know!
lol
-
I know! I know!
It couldn't be, could it? ;) lol
-
Well clearly I could tell you the answer but that'd be cheating :D

The Flying Parrotmen are actually going to be conversions of knarloc riders. The knarloc will be converted into a flying knarloc using bits from the GW High Elf dragon

Was it Cacique Caribe?
Oh, and great job on those parrotmen. I need to do mine one of these days. I have a good thirty or forty of the things in pieces.
-
Looking good there Neil. Let's keep our finger crossed and hope Little Wars is still going to be be a going concern!
-
Was it Cacique Caribe?
Nope, but it's not a bad guess, it's the kind of nonsense he would come up with :)

Cool, look forward to seeing them.

I have started work on my Greater Knarloc conversion to make the Tarok.
The Tarok was the massive flying creature that Jake Sully flies in the climatic battle of the film Avatar.
For the conversion I am taking a Forge World Greater Knarloc and adding a tail and some wings from the GW High Elf Dragon kit.
Here are some initial work in progress shots. The wings and tail were pinned with aluminium sculpture wire and then I use some Knead it (plumber's epoxy putty) which cures in around 10-15 mins to a rock hard finish to set the tail and wings in place. I will then use green stuff to sculpt up the details.

I'll use a dremel to remove the scales from the tail and wings as the flying creatures in Avatar did not have scales.
I'll post some more WIP when I have sculpted the green stuff.
Follow my blog to keep updated with this and my other Wargamming projects.

Now that is one hell'va conversion... :o o_o :-*
-
Great conversion!
Cant wait to see it progress.
:-*
-
Had a heck of a time finding the original beast's image. Seems there's a variety of spellings floating about. ;)
I'm assuming you aren't going for the multi-eyes, though I will say the head is working better than I assumed, as the only animals I have a moderately clear mental image are of the horsey things, and they look rather like seahorse heads.
Coming along VERY well; a most worthy project!

Amazing paint job and idea, love the theme.....
-
An alternative name for this display is Avatar 1884!
I am going for a VSF gaslight game which captures the essence of the film Avatar without copying it too much.
This gives me the artistic freedom to make a flying Knarloc. If I wanted to be closer to the film Tarok I probably would have just gone with the whole GW High elf dragon and modified it slightly, extra eyes etc. etc.
Cheers

Outstanding conversion! Well done!
-
Very nice. I look forward to seeing him soon.

Okay some more pictures of the Tarok/Knarloc conversion.
I have now finished the green stuff sculpting and its ready for its undercoat

I did a slight repositioning of one of the legs to make it look more like the creature is in flight and I had to resculpt the foot once the base was removed

The next pictures should be of the finished painted Tarok!

Interesting indeed!

:-*
Love it! Can't wait to see more progress.
-
Looking good!
:-*
Seemless putty-pushing resulting in a great result.
Looking forward to updates on this.
;D
-
Okay, here is the finished result.
I do need to apply the army painter dip to complete the shading but couldn't wait to show you guys. I'm pretty happy with how it has turned out! :D
Now need to make a base for it. The Tarok is mounted on an antenna so I can move it up and down for the different altitudes.
Cheers
Fuzzy.

Brilliant, mind you. Deliciously so, mind you. I shall mutter unintelligibly here for a bit...
Snickies, that's awesome!
Dazzle AND scare the heck out of the opposition! Take them five minutes to getting around to noticing the bolt sticking out of their chest!

I was wondering if anyone had seen these?

I think the nightmare and jabberwock would work for this kind of thing.
