Has anybody tried using Death in the Dark Continent for a slightly earlier period, i.e. the late 1500s, when the Wazunga would have had matchlocks and worn armour? I would be interested in gaming (say) the Portuguese with or vs. the Kongo Kingdom.

I'm planning to do that. :D
I wrote a couple of articles on the subject and have some unfinished papers somewhere but here are the links to my blog:

The East African expeditions are also very interesting. Not only Cristóvão da Gama's Abyssinia expedition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethiopian%E2%80%93Adal_war) but especially Francisco Barreto's expedition to the Monomotapa (Great Zimbabwe): http://www.rhodesia.nl/theal_3_202.htm
Mark Copplestone started some figures and still has the sculpts but isn't interested in returning to the Conquistadores project (Foundry issues?). Eureka has some fine Portuguese for the period that are perfect for such a project but you'll need lots of natives...
Brazil is also on the pipeline... If anyone has Foundry Afro-Caribbean Renegades or Copplestone Indians to sell send me a PM.
Cheers

Hi,
Are these "Afro-Caribbean Renegades" perchance ? ?

There are 45 of `em I think but sadly NO quivers for the bowmen : (
Also a bit of flash on some though they look like they should clean up just dandy,
Cheers ! Gary

........Ahhh we did once sail The Bay Beyond Dee , happy days ! Then the sailing fees increased, our little boat was holed and sank, ( it was full of lead ) so we sail there no more :'( . Perhaps we shall one day refloat her.....
As for the minis I'm open to offers :)
-
@Kingscarbine: Thanks for those details! Do you think that the Afro-Caribbeans might also be used as Kongo troops who have undergone some Portuguese influence?
@Gary: PM sent, but please give Kingscarbine first priority.

Gary's figures just fired up the market... :D I suppose some can be used as a Kongolese noble's bodyguards but I never planned to used them as such.

An interesting account of an Englishman's adventures in late 16th and early 17th c. Angola and Congo:
