Title: Cheetors Malifaux: Guild Executioner Finished
Post by: cheetor on 22 February 2012, 08:13:03 PM
Hi everyone

I recently came across a local Malifaux player and decided to test the waters.  I have finished my first five man crew and I am putting photos of them up on my blog (http://"http://sho3box.wordpress.com/") over the next few days, starting with Judge:

I have only played a couple of games of Malifaux so I am still very much in the learning stages.  Below are a couple of shots of the games.

I have some more pictures and talk about this stuff on my blog (http://"http://sho3box.wordpress.com/") if anyone is interested.  I will add the rest of the crew here as I get them photographed and posted up.

Comments and criticisms all desired if you get a chance :)

LIke the way you did the white color in the judge. Generally a great choice of colours on him.

Thank you.  Lady Justices crew (including the Judge above) is finished.  Next on the table is the Ortega crew.

Thanks.  I used a little of that white and green on Lady Justice too, in an effort to visually tie them together.

I went through a six month painting slump last year and it really is amazing how much about painting miniatures I have forgotten.  I painted the Death Marshals coats before I painted the Judge and I approached them the wrong way, with inferior end results.

I am pleased with how the Judge turned out though, as I am slowly relearning/remembering some of what I have forgotten.

Like the Judge a lot! Great work.

You didn't choose to do him just because of your Dredd stuff, did you? being a Judge and all...  ;D

Nice! Really nice! That judge model is superb - very crisp painting, lovely smooth colours and shading/highlighting. I know nothing about Malifaux (other than liking the look and feel of the miniatures) but I'll be on my way to your blog now to find out more. Happy you're out of your painting slump - it happens to all of us, but this is a great return to form!

Thanks for the feedback guys.  Judge probably worked out better than any of the other figures in the crew, so I hope that the follows ups dont let it down too much.

You didn't choose to do him just because of your Dredd stuff, did you? being a Judge and all...  ;D

:)

Its slightly odd that that was how things worked out, but its just a coincidence.  I dont have a subconscious fetish for extremely right wing authoritarian figures.  At least, I dont think that I do...

Thanks.  I dont have my painting notebook with me right now so I cant be certain at the moment, so I will put the recipes up later.

I dont use any very complicated techniques and I dont wet blend or anything like that, just hasty layering. I tend to avoid mixing complicated colours too: for me its all about getting the figures painted to above a certain standard, ready to game with so that I can tackle some of the other stuff in the lead mountain. I just layer with occasional hasty blurring of edges, if you know what I mean.

Recipes this evening.

Not my very best work, but I am happy enough all the same.  More photos and info on my blog (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/) for anyone interested.

Feedback appreciated as usual :)

Recipe for the white, green and grey please.  :-*

Sorry for the delay.  I currently paint with a pretty simple base coat everything, wash everything (usually Devlan Mud) and add an average of two layers on top of each colour approach.  Its all pretty straightforward, just reasonably thin layering, no complicated techniques.

Judges coat
GW Astronomican Grey
GW Devlan Mud
GW Astronomican Grey
GW Astronomican Grey/White mix
White

Often I would use Game Colour off white when painting something like this, but I went with a straight cold white for the Judge.

Judges scarf
GW Knarloc Green
GW Devlan Mud
GW Knarloc Green
GW Knarloc Green/Scorpion Green mix
GW Scorpion Green
Model Colour Flat Yellow/GW Scorpion Green mix

Judges gloves and trousers
GW Charadon Granite
GW Devlan Mud
GW Charadon Granite
GW Charadon Granite/Kommando Khaki mix
GW Kommando Khaki

I hope that that is some use.

Lovely rich colours there, Cheetor.

Thanks for the recipe.

Naturally I don't have any of thsoe colours, but sounds like I need to break down and finally buy some of that devlan mud everyone keeps singing the praises of.

Devlan Mud isnt a magic bullet, but it is useful for prepping decent tabletop standard figures.  Covering a base coated figure in it shades the base tones while also defining the various areas quickly, a lot like "dipping" really but without the stigma ;)  Its handy stuff.

Saw Lady Justice on your blog - lovely painting. That's a great group shot as well. They've come together very nicely, and the gravestones look cool too. Are they the Renedra (spelling) ones?

Excellent! So, is this the end of your Malifaux project, or have our plans for 2012 now been derailed? I know mine would be!

Thanks.  One of the gravestones above is from the GW Zombie sprue, and the other two are Renedra, like the ones here:

Half of the LAF (me included) seem to have recently bought Renedra gravestones to go with one or two GW Garden of Morr cemeteries.  A full graveyard is high on my to-do list.

Plans for 2012 have been derailed a bit by Malifaux alright.  The small number of figures required to play plus access to a regular weekly game has made me switch priorities for a while.

I have Malifaux Ortegas primed and I am currently working on some other Weird West stuff.  Some of them should be finished over the next week or two.  I am also working on more post-apoc/Western/Malifaux terrain which I hope to have up an running within the next month or so.

Thanks for the feedback.

Superb Lady J!

Might have to put some pics of my own version.

Superb Lady J!

Thanks.  I forgot to include a bigger picture of Lady J on her own.  There are some problems with the painting on some of the areas, but I am pleased with the overall colour scheme.

Francisco and Santiago Ortega are on the painting table at the moment, but real life is getting in the way.  I hope to have a few more Malifaux bits done over the next week or two.

I got distracted from painting the Ortegas by painting some objective bits and pieces for my "Schemes" and "Strategies".

Not the most exciting miniatures that I have ever painted, but necessary and good for narrative.

Some Ortegas next.

Like those objective markers - how did you do the letters on the first six? They look very cool.

Looking forward to the Ortegas!

The letters come from a model railroad signage set.  I would have preferred to use numbers but the letters will do.

Looking forward to the Ortegas!

Real life is slowing things a bit right now, but Santiago is finished bar basing, with Nino not that far behind.

Malifaux crew progress has been slow, although other projects have been flying along so thats something.

Just to prove that this project is still ticking over, here is the finished Santiago Ortega.

Im not sure who will be next.  It will likely be Nino Ortega or Lady Justice totem, the Scale of Justice.

Nice, Cheetor! Love the coat, and the blue of the trousers - could you spill the beans on the recipe for them? Lovely shading and the style is so crisp and clean - even more than usual with this one! The gang is going to look great when it's all done.

Love the coat, and the blue of the trousers - could you spill the beans on the recipe for them?

Unfortunately many of the paints are from the "old" GW range, but here goes anyway:

Denim:
Black undercoat
GW Necron Abyss
GW Devlan Mud
GW Necron Abyss/Fenris Grey mix
GW Necron Abyss/Fenris Grey/ Game Color Off White mix
Game Color Off White edging to worn areas.

Coat:
GW Calthan Brown
Devlan Mud
GW Calthan Brown
GW Calthan Brown/Khemri Brown mix
GW Calthan Brown/Khemri Brown mix/Game Color Off White
GW Gryphonne Sepia wash

Pretty straightforward stuff I reckon.  All colours simply layered on in reasonably thin coats.  I hope that that helps.

That definitely helps, Cheetor - thank you! I have lots of different browns, always looking for the right ones for naturalistic colours, but Calthan Brown was never one I picked up. Believe it or not, our local store still has all the old GW paints alongside the new ones, so I'll pick up a pot tonight when I'm there - oh, and Khemri Brown. The denim looks like a good recipe - it's going in my notebook!
Looking forward to more - in particular to seeing the whole gang together when they're all done. Lovely project, this.

I've got a primed ortega warband so your denim recipe is much appreciated...  ;)

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Nino Ortega has been sitting half painted on the table since early March ~30 other miniatures have gone through the entire process in front of him.

I do hope to get him done soon though.  The denim recipe will be slightly varied for him :)

You have some very lovely figures there. The Judge has always been one of my favorites and you've really done him justice (pun intended).

The older Malifaux figures have so much character and they are a pleasure to paint (I've painted 10 crews). Unfortunately I can't say the same for many of the newer ones although some of them are on par with the older ones.

Really nice work.  I have several figures as I think they are really well done, but to be honest I am intimidated by them, so they sit on my paint table.  I really don't have too much time to paint, with work and family stuff.  But I might just drag my figures to the front of the queue for a change of pace.

I manged to get a pair of figures for this project finished on time for my first Malifaux tournament last Monday (which I actually won, which was genuinely unexpected).  I havent had a chance to take any photos of the two additions yet so in the meantime I will put up a photo of a game that I played on Tuesday using my nearly completed cemetery terrain (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/tag/st-craniums/).

Thanks.  The Judge has an interesting look.  There is something quite anime/manga about the figure that I find quite appealing (even though I am not really an anime fan).

The older Malifaux figures have so much character and they are a pleasure to paint (I've painted 10 crews).

In all honesty while I have found the Malifaux figures pleasant to have finished, I found them troublesome to paint.  The detail is fine and tough to get right.  The casting quality of the Wyrd stuff is a little disappointing I find too.  Not that it has stopped me from buying a load more :)

Really nice work.  I have several figures as I think they are really well done, but to be honest I am intimidated by them, so they sit on my paint table.  I really don't have too much time to paint, with work and family stuff.  But I might just drag my figures to the front of the queue for a change of pace.

Thanks.  I absolutely get why you would find the figures intimidating: the detail is fine and there tends to be quite a lot of it.  I usually paint in batches of about three to five models.  For Malifaux I have reduced that to batches of only two or even just one model.  More than that and I find that I can get bogged down.

Overall my Malifaux output is a little slow as a result, but at least it is reasonably steady.  Try one of the figures that you have (a minion would be better than a master to start as they tend to have less detail), whats the worst that could happen?  Even if you make a mess of it, I guarantee that you will learn something form the experience.

I played in my first Malifaux tournament just over a week ago.  The games went well and I learned a lot about playing the rather convoluted but (finally) somewhat satisfying game.

Part of the reason that I decided to enter was so that I was forced to put some paint on some Malifaux figures that I had been avoiding.  I managed to get a couple of figures finished on time for the tournament, the first of which is this big guy:

I had to rush to get the figure finished on time and there are some parts that I should really go back to fix, but at this stage I am unlikely to bother.

More info and photos are on my blog (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/). My Malifaux progress has picked up again so I hope to be updating here again soon.
