Title: I want a demon army
Post by: sgarris on 02 March 2012, 05:04:11 AM
The other day I was rummaging through some old figures and came across my old Vor, The Maelstrom, Growler figures.  I have a lot of them and I have always been very fond of my Razorbacks.  I’m saddened that I couldn’t use them in another game system. Or so I thought.  Cruising the web I came across this site:

http://wargamesunlimited.net/noquarter/index.html

Here, I found a system that allows me to assign abilities, traits and attributes and give them a uniform point value.  While looking it over, I thought it would be a good time to start a demon army.  However, I don’t care for the large stereotypical horned archetype demon, and I don’t wish to collect any of the four daemon armies of GW.  I want my own spin on the denizens of the lower planes.  What’s a person to do?  Then I remembered these from my own lead pile.

I have also made an order for some Hell Dorado Wormpiles and Moggot Bearers.  I also figured that since maggots to turn into flies in the so called "real world" I would track down some old Ral Partha Chasme figures and mix in some Reaper Fly Demons and cichstus for good measure.  It is my hope that mixing in these similar poses it will make up for the numerous Grenadier Larva miniatures.

So now I was wondering, does any one know of some other maggoty figures that are out there I can consider for my choice of army?

I love the idea of a mix-n-match demon army. You can really get creative with your choice of models. Maggots sound good too.

If you're looking for fantasy skirmish rules that let you assign stats to any model, I can recommend Skulldred and Song of Blades & Heroes. Skulldred is still in beta testing - it's being written by Dave King, a member of this forum - and it's great. You might be able to score a beta test copy of the rules if you go to the Skulldred site (http://skulldred.blogspot.com/) and mail Dave.

SoBH is a bit simpler, but still loads of fun. You can download the PDF pretty cheap from the Ganesha Games site.

Re: maggot models: if you can find the old OOP metal Rackham Incubi from the Mid-Nor faction, they are great:

The Troll Forged Worm Grubs (http://trollforged.com/shelf_sci-fi_Aliens.html) are pretty cool, and would make excellent giant maggots with a little conversion.

Mortimer and Mortimers girl might work well for the force.

Looking forward to seeing this force take shape.

Not only good choices (and leads) but a challange as well. Just how difficult are these Mid-Nor Incubi going to be to get anyways. Not a single listing or site with them at all? Worst part...I really like them.   lol

gribblyminiatures.co.uk
do have some very nice giant grubs, very easy to paint:

This 'miniature' is about 70mm tall.

There have been two grub sculpts called 'Cthonian Larvae' by Rackham and, of course, the ones by
otherworldminiatures.co.uk

I had a similar idea a while ago and made up a skirmish group looking like this:

CP Models have some maggoty things: http://www.cpmodelsminiatures.co.uk/CP%20MODELS%2028MM%20%20NIGHT%20TERRORS.htm

Not maggots, but rather worms: http://achesoncreations.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=82&Itemid=1

In their 'cinematic effects' line Armorcast don't only have plasma blasts & muzzle flash, they also have maggot & slime streams- might come in handy:
http://armorcast.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=100&products_id=798

There's also some suitable minis among the d&d ppp clix stuff (carrion crawler, centiped thingy, bone naga)

I saw a thread recently (or was it a blog post?) about using anglers' plastic imitation maggots to represent foot-long versions in 28mm.  Might make good basing extras, if nothing else.

Also have a look at the various manufacturers that produce cthulhu stuff: rafm (http://www.rafm.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=RAF&Product_Code=RAF02926&Category_Code=COCM), Mirliton (the old grenadier minis) (http://miniature-heroes.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=462_485&products_id=20910) (via Miniature Heroes (http://miniature-heroes.co.uk))

.:edit:.

Take a gander through the Dreamblade collectible miniatures as well - they are out of production now, but pretty easy to get.  The HellShrieker, Lady Chrysalis and others are very maggoty/flyish.

And a few more:

Wyrd/ Malifaux: https://wyrd-games.net/shop/Primordial-Magic.html, https://wyrd-games.net/shop/Razorspine-Rattler.html

Fenryll have some caterpillar men, but they don't look all that great: http://www.fenryll.com/product.php?id_product=509 - I guess with some cheapo Halloween decoration and some bits from the bitsbox (maybe something slightly rotten like the mantic zombies for torsos) you could build a fairly repulsive looking unit of similar creatures on the cheap.

I love seeing more unique denizens and spheres of the hellish planes, this is going to be a fun thread to watch.
You could try some Carrion Crawlers, the ones made by Otherworld are delightfully annelidic.

The Dark Age Games Brood Howler also looks like he might fit in.
