Assorted repeats, plus Handbot and "Minotaur" god.

Dammit Steve, if it wasn't for you and these advanced warnings I wouldn't have to smuggle bagfuls of kids magazines into the house past the missus lol
-
Dammit, only 1 handbot! >:(

Pardon the ignorance of but a mere mortal colonial, but, what does this mean?
My daughter has become a Dr. Who fanatic. She makes these sculpy 10mm Dalek ear rings and sells them to her friends. If this is something she can get free,
help a brother out?

Doctor Who Adventures is a weekly children's magazine published in the UK, containing articles, pin-ups, puzzles and comic strips based on the TV series. Each issue has a toy or some-such either attached to the cover or in a polybag with the magazine. This week it's a mask. Next week, it's this pack of minis (roughly to 30mm size - see numerous previous threads).
These toys and other geegaws are billed as "free gifts", but the costs are, of course, factored into the cover price - usually £2.50 GBP an issue. The more desirable of them generally turn up for sale separately on eBay, often at ridiculously inflated prices.

How much would you need from me to get me 2 of them?
-
I suggest, Pariah, that you ask someone rather more reliable (and less selfish) than me: I can be reasonably sure of getting a copy for myself from the local newsagent, but getting multiple copies in my little town would involve foraging further afield, and I can't always manage that. Sorry.
-
Hi Parriah,
I'm a newbie here but I could probably pick up a couple of copies from my local branch of WH Smith (if they don't sell out fast). If you could cover the cost of purchase and postage then I'd be more than happy to help a fellow out.

I'm surprised about they're only being 1 Handbot and one Minotaur. Most of these figures have been released before in lots of at least five. Got to wonder if at some time in the near future there's going to be a release with more Handbots. Certainly hope so - medical care has rarely been so menacing!

That'd be fantastic, PM sent!

Thanx for the quick response anyway Steve! ;)

What size are these things anyway?
-
I'm surprised about they're only being... one Minotaur.
Perhaps it is actually a Nimon :)

Roughly 30mm-ish. See here for photos with a ruler: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=37326.15 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=37326.15)

"Praiseworthy alien god-being and handbot scanned alongside measuring implement. This is a kindness."

Have to say that I picked them up today in WH Smiths and put them back again :(
-
Great work Steve.
Bit of a David Walliams thing going on there with the Handbot! :D
-
I put them back too, only because I already had enough already.
You have a gift of bringing out the best in these very basic miniatures.
If it were not for these grotty freebies, we would be in some difficulties.
-
Looking really good there Steve. The eyes on the minotaur are ace.
Sadly I haven't been able to find any in the vicinity - as it goes, I probably don't need many handbots (though more generic robots are always useful), and I suppose it won't be hard to find a minotaur if I need one.
-
Yes, the Minotaur paint job is amazing, considering how uninspiring the bare plastic sculpt looks! 8) 8) 8) 8)
Didn't pick any up, as I didn't think I needed the one handbot! Not likely to be a 'Army' re-release in the near future, and I don't think it's likely that the series will reuse them anyway.
-
Thanks, chaps: I really haven't done anything special with these - it's all there in the model. For cover mounts on a kids' comic they are, Cybermen apart, really a lot better then we have any reason to expect.
-
Well, I have to say my attempts at painting the Ood, Judoon, Silurians and Silence came out far better than I expected - I'm a total muppet with a brush, and they looked OK, so I have to agree with you - at approximately 17p each or there abouts, they're pretty good value I think.
-
I will be trying to get this - the Minotaur looks like a civilian Minotaur indeed makes a difference from the usual axe carrying muscled bovine. It could be used to make a statue as detailing on a building or some such likewise the angels would be great for a cemetery. I am sure other interesting uses can be found.
-
So far, all I've gotten are the Daleks x 17. If anyone can pick up extras, and willing to ship to the US, please do mention it on the Bazar.
Even for the repeat 'extras'.
Thanks!
Doug

The Weeping Angels are ideal for that use.
I made a very quick piece of scenery for Strange Aeons with them.
Highly recomended if you can get hold of them.

What episode did the minotaur feature in?
The hand bot, judoon, ood, etc I am familiar with. I don't recall the minotaur (I also don't watch every episode, as some were just too cheesy for words).
-
What episode did the minotaur feature in?
"The God Complex" - the one set in a fake hotel.
-
Ah. That one. Thanks.
It wasn't one of the "good ones" that I missed then. :D
(Unlike the wife who grew up with B7 and DW, I didn't. I still regard them as little better than panto - and the wobbly cardboard sets don't help).

Blasphemy! Burn the heretic!
I really liked "The God Complex", had bit of a "Sapphire & Steel" vibe to it.
-
Is this where I mention I don't really like S&S either?
:D
I watched Dr who as a kid for less than a season. It was the Jon Pertwee years. Then I had better things to do.
-
Even seeing some of the paint jobs on here, I still maintain that the only free plastic toys from the Dr Who magazines worth having are the Daleks. The rest, quite frankly, are no better than the rubbish you get from Christmas crackers.

Coming with issue 267, on sale 3 May:
The figures pictured are the same as in the previous set. I don't know what the "surprise" is.
-
Surprise! No handbot or Nimon!
-
WHY???
They must have a warehouse full of these things to get rid of.
Now if they'd like to have a go at Autons...but I suppose that was 2005...at 7 years ago [can you believe it?] it would be ancient history for the DWA readers.

And again, as Romans, in 2010. Don't forget that all of 2005-2011 Doctor Who is on almost constant rotation on BBC3 and UK Gold and that DVDs, iPlayer etc make it almost perpetually available.
By the way, Doctor Who Adventures does make references in most issues to the 1963-1989 run (and even sometimes to the 1996 TV movie). The latest issue features photographs of a 1963 Dalek, a 1966 Cyberman, and the third Doctor with the Brigadier from 1971, while the AAAGH comic strip features a Sea Devil (last seen in 1984), a Marshman (1980) and a Haemovore (1989).
Doctor Who makes spods of all its fans, no matter how young!
-
Perhaps you get one army of any of the figures shown . An army of Cyberfatguys , or Squatarens etc .
It's quite common to get a random toy week when the warehouse stock is getting low .
-
Hi folks
Figured I would post this stuff here rather than start a new topic.
While waiting in the cue at my local Argos I spied bags emblazoned with the Dr Who logo for the small sum of 99p. So picked up a couple and was quite chuffed with what they contained.
The first bag I opened contained a 9 piece hard plastic white supreme Dalek kit.
The details nice and crisp with only light mold lines on a couple of the parts. Its just over 40mm tall, but its base is quite large so it can clip into scenery sets like lego. Even if you cut the base down a bit its probably better suited to 32mm heroic scale than 25mm.
Daleks can also be bought in sets of 5 for £9.99. If you want to get them cheaper you can buy the single bags, but you will need to give them a good fondling to tell if it contains a Dalek lol

The other bag contained one of those silence blokes, a nice little model but he would look a bit out of place on a gaming table.

-
My children discovered these. They are woefully unavailable here in the USA. So we have to order from Amazon. The nice part is they scale with my kids MegaBloks figs and Lego minifigs. Their little feet attach to Lego as well.
-
I've used the 11 Doctors Character Building set to decorate the appropriate spots on my DVD shelves. Seriously cute models.
For 28mm gaming purposes, some of the playsets might provide usable terrain pieces, if the nobbly bits aren't too obtrusive.
Character had this Dalek Saucer on display at the London Toy Fair in January:

I could make good use of THAT, nobbly bits notwithstanding.

My local Morrisons had the sets of 5 Daleks or Cybermen reduced to £1.99 last week. No use for wargaming but I bought Daleks :D
-
That Dalek saucer looks great, could definitely find a use for that. I have had an idea of doing a tabletop version of UFO/X-COM, and that would make the perfect scout saucer.
The HM Forces range they do has lots interesting bits and bobs that could be converted up into sci-fi vehicles.

I am starting to feel the temptation to run a table top game using the little Doctor Who figures as they are. Does that mean as a grown man I am going to be collecting Lego again :?

Er...............more reasons to shop at Morereasons........... or so the advert went in their early days :D
-
Not sure I want any more Daleks! That saucer would be very useful, though. I'll have to start looking in the local toyshops in the future.

Don't be silly, you can never have enough Daleks.

there was a big game with that stuff at Salute...

It looks like the "surprise" is which set you're getting.
The mag is bagged up so you cant see which monsters you're getting in advance :(

Had a peek today in a couple of packs (just give the bag a shake and peek in the edges) and each pack had 5 Daleks in it, but couldn't see the other figures.
-
Any chance those Character Building Daleks and Cybermen squads are still marked down in the UK? Any generous souls out there that would post me some? Even with postage that's going to be less than half the cost on Amazon.

I won't be in Morrisons again until next Thursday I'm afraid, and they didn't have many left, but I will pick a couple up if they are there.
-
Not seen the Character Builder sets but I've started a thread for anyone who wants a pack of figures from the magazine. If anyone else wants to volunteer to get sets too, please do.
-
If anybody needs the pack of figures and the magazine then I could pick some up for you - I was in W.H. Smiths yesterday and they had about 5 left on the shelf. As already mentioned it's the luck of the draw as to what you get but I did sneak a peek at one set and I could see 4 x Ood.
-
Just thought that I'd give you a heads-up that they've sold out.

yes! it's a kind of surprise bag, I got mine from a friend coming from London past week, I was expecting to get the little assortmen displayed on the picture and instead I got a pack of judoon and oods, the same one they released some weeks ago, then I realized the exact meaning of "surprise", I'm a bit upset to be honest.
