Title: 2SS Das Reich - for Rules of Engagement new pics 2/4
Post by: Galland on 28 March 2012, 03:58:54 PM
Here are some vehicles that I have been working on lately. I am painting various vehicles and hardware, transports and combat vehicles, without any specific plan, I just paint what ever I feel like, knowing that all of them will be used one way or another, if not in the game per se, they will be used as terrain and to create atmosphere.
First out are a Warlords Phanomen lorry, Warlords Stug IIIG and a Marder II from Die Waffenkammer.

Phanomen Granit H25 Truck

At the moment I have a Waffenkammer Stug IV, Pz IV, Panther G and a Köningstiger. Warlords Opel Blitz, Schwimwagen, BMW and a Kübelwagen on the painting table. I will post pics as they get read.
I have also started out a Wirbelwind and a Marder IIIM in 1/48 that will be incorporated at a later stage.

I am currently building up forces for Rules and Engagement and NUTS!, all (eccept the Köningstiger) will belong to a Kampfgruppe from 2SS Das Reich, wich are one of my favourite units from WWII. I will propably bolster the forces with some LAH and 12SS as well, to get some variety to the vehicles and troops used.
I have lots of miniatures on the table as well, in various stages of completion, pictures will follow as they get ready and are presentable.

Some of the miniatures that will be used for NUTS! and other games related to WWII. Pulpy but with a WWII theme, so I hope that they will be allowed in here, otherwise just let me know and I will remove them.
The pilot will serve as Luftwaffe liason officer for my panzergrenadieren.

These pictures are doing your vehicles and miniatures no justice, dear friend. Only a fraction of the work you've put into them is coming through in these photos. Yet still, they rock my socks off :)

Heya Simon

I am greatly humbled when you ask me something about painting, and I will send you a pm where I can try to explain a bit and hopefully make it comprehencable.

With a little tweaking in ACDsee I think they may be closer to how they are IRL. Very worn and dirty frontline look  :)

Great looking vehicles and miniatures so far.  I wish I could weather my vehicles like that!

P.S.  I feel your pain on the photography.  Ugh.

Heya DFlynSqrl

Actually, you can weather your vehicles like that. Its just a matter of getting some experience with an airbrush, some oil paints + white spirits and make thin washes, also get some pigments, either from a regular artists shop or use MIG alternatively AK Interactive. Also the chipping effects are not that hard to learn how to do. Experiment a bit with various greys and browns, and it will not take you long time to get there. The main thing is, dare to do it!

By the way guys, thanks for the kind words, its really nice to hear!
Photography on the other hand... thats the devils work! :-P

Here are some new stuff that will be added to the forces... SS runes removed due to the rules of the forums, I forgot that they where not allowed, I thought it was only for the Swastika proper.

Superb. Your vehicles really look as if they have come off the front line after some serious action.

The best I can do is a qucik dry brush so they look dirty!

Thank you guys, much appreciated! Actually, I havent used any drybrushing at all on any of the vehicles I think. The Balkenkreuzes and SS runes are made with a stencil and airbrush, same on all vehicles.

Both of these vehicles and the poor fieldgun accidently went flying since our cat freaked out and made a mess out of the model table, but I have managed to get most parts and get them together again.

Excellent work on those vehicles (the weathering on the Granit is stunning), but you'll have to blot out those runes on the Schwimmwagen pics.

I have also finished some of the characters for our more pulp oriented games. First out is a Reaper miniature, I am not sure what he was supposed to represent originally, but I will use him as a Spanish Mercenary Officer.

All camo variants I will be using are documented from original wartime captures. I say this so we dont dwell in to useless discussions regarding german camo. I heard that the gentlemen over at PTM gave Stone-Cold-Lead some flak for his choosen camo scheme, very silly.
Some explenations regarding the camo. A variety of early wartime camo smocks where made, and its a whole history dicipline of its own, along with KZ made SS specific garments, not necesarely official, but at least semi-industrial productions. A wide variety of privately purchased garments are found in this period along with locally produced uniforms from regimental level. I have opted to allow one of the soldiers here to have a Mouse grey reversible jacket, he might be a volenteer from Luftwaffe or Heer, wich was not unusuall during this period (Normandy to Ardennes), on the contrary, there was a great influx of these volenteers or sort of volenteers. All soldiers will have a mix of Oakleaf Fall, Oakleaf Spring, Planetree Spring and Peadot, with some Mouse grey and Italian here and there. By the way, the names of the camo is not wartime but rather post war collectors terms.

I am not the best miniature painter, but it have been fun to experiement, and I am absolutely learning a lot while doing this, the camo gets better and better, especially when I dont over complicate things. As I have said before, I dont paint much miniatures these days, but I have been greatly inspired by FKSN and the others in the gang, I even got glasses and other optical aids, wich have greatly enhanced my experience. I am having a great time, and really love the fact that I am painting again, not only vehicles and airplanes, but even normal miniatures.

I have seen and lived with these figures and vehicles for some time and I must say that the pictures dont really make them justice.

And on the subject of weathering I can recommend reading anything Mig Jimenez has written, and invest in pigments and oils.

Yeah that's quite nifty. I always wondered how best to get around the casualty issue with multi based models.

Heya guys, thanks for the kind words.

Regarding the split bases, its a friend of mine (he is on the forums under the name of Manmachine) who made these for me. He simply takes the (in this case GW round 40mm) bases, cut them in half with a fine saw, then he glues a piece of plastic strip or a simple match in to the area that needs to be filled. Then if needed just sand the base to be smooth. When painted it looks like it was made like this. He have done that with some of the larger round bases as well, to accomodate larger crews, like HMGs (well in the german case its the MG34/42 on lavette for sustained fire) or the 8cm Mortar crew and such. However, for the larger stuff I prefer to base every miniature on their own bases and keep the weapon either on a small base of its own (it yields the opportunity to add some scenic stuff, like grenades, grenade cases and whatnots) or I just keep the weapon as it is.
There are a few advantages with this. For instance, all weapons on bases can be considered to be usable by who ever can get in contact with them (both sides used captured gear, equipment, vehicles and weaponry). Its also a bit fun to find a MG standing in a house or the like, and that you can actually deside to assign a model to operate it!
The other way is to leave the weapons without a base, and at times use them as part of the scenery, this I do with larger weaponry, like larger fieldguns, PAK and FLAK guns etc. Most of the time this kind of ordanance is a bit to heavy to be using in 28mm anyway, but it looks great with a battery of 105mm standing on a field. They can also be uses as objectives or landmarks.

This is what we are doing. One table with a rural area, modular terrain for variation and bouccage terrain. The other one is a city/village area that is non-modular. Its easier to build a beutiful village if everything is "stuck" where its supposed to be, with gardens and whatnots.

I just bought Normandy Firefight by Warwick Kinrade (great price at Northstar Miniatures atm), and I am really looking forward to see how this works, and to be able to play WWII in a really detailed gaming enviroment.
I have Kampfgruppe Normandie, wich is a very well written and by Warwick Kinrade as well (and the most beutiful rules book that I own) and looks really good, even though I am not interested in smaller scales and above all not interested in rules that use abstract values to that extent, and hope that this will be reason enough to buy it.

I only use the variants that Mini-Natur are making, sold as Silflor from Antenocitis Workshop. I think its the best there is on the market, and also the price is better than any other brand, for instance GW or Army Painter. So, you get the best product at a better price, hard to beat in my book.

Man, I was going to photograp two new vehicles today and show, but alas, faith had something else in mind for these. First of all, the cat have mangled one of them, and now its almost impossible to get the windshield to stick to the damn vehicle, its a Sdkfz 7 and its driving me nuts. Something else that also is making me crazy is the fact that my right hand is acting up. I have had EXTENSIVE surgery to the hand in the past, and I can only use a few fingers, but whats even worse, is that they changed and tried to alter the nerve system, and every now and then I involuntary throw or drop things. I did that yesterday. The damn model, a Sdkfz 215 was done, ready for taking fotos, and I sort of throw a brush full of paint on it. naturally, it lands right on the front top part of it, leaving a large dark grey area. I tried to wipe it off, cleaning it with water... then I took out the white spririt, and it did work, but I got a bit too enthusiastic and all of a sudden I had wiped all the paint of the plate. I have tried to save it, but alas, it doesnt work. I was about to throw the damn thing out through the window, but decided to actually leave it with the failed painting, its "mended" and they have "fixed" it with fresh paint :-P
I will try to re-attach the windshield on the Sdkfz 7 and take some photographs of the vehicles tomorrow.
Pictures will follow...

Pfft... the Hand is doing fine... still looking for those dead fishes!

Anyway, I didnt really get any good pics, but will post these anyway, to bolster my ego, primarely because it feels like progress when you have posted about your stuff online. Its the ill fated Sdkfz 251 and Sdkfz 7. Of course, as the curse is still on, the windshield came of again today. I think I will have to bite the bullet, and actually file it down, the same with the frame where its supposed to go, and if that doesnt work, greenstuff it (that got to be the wargamers gaffa?).

I will also show some WIP on my Waffenkammer Panzers... PzIV and Königstiger.

The Sdkfz 7

Beautiful painting, chipping and weathering!
One photographic tip though:

Get a bigger distance from the object (still use macro function) and cut the photo later. Also use as much light as you can (but no flash) and even make the photo lighter later (until backdrop turns to pure white).
Use a white curved large sheet of paper without folds that forms a bottom and a wall like the letter "J".
This will enable you to photograph bigger objects without blurry sections.

There used to be a farmer somewhere near Derby (UK) who had what appeared to be a SDKFZ 251/1 C (I think) parked up in a field. Couldn't get close to look though.

I had a neighbor as a kid that had a Schwimwagen (among other military vehicles), I used to sneak around his yard and just stand and stare at it. I loved it so much, but my cheap parents didnt want to buy it for me.
He did collect amphibous vehicles primarely I belive, but had some jeeps and such as well. He also had a nasty dog I remember, wich really freaked me and my friend out, but it was worth the horror, just to be able for us to stand and hang around the Schwimwagen every now and then.

A funny thing with the pepple in our wargaming group that are involved in the WWII campaign, is that we have more Allied players than German! It seems that many where thinking something like "Oh better make some Allies, everyone else will play German".

Ah well, we will win on good looking panzers and smart uniforms.

Disappointing, Michi.  I was expecting to see some scantily clad Falschmirjaegerettes stepping out of that flying saucer.   ;)

Great painting, Galland. That Marder is my favourite, it looks like it's been through a lot.

Great painting, Galland. That Marder is my favourite, it looks like it's been through a lot.

Thank you, coming from you makes it even better. My idea with the Marder is that it have gone through a lot of combat, during several operations, and somehow survived and will now be used in the later stages of the pre-ardennes fighting. I really want my Marder crews and vehicles to look like they are reall frontschweine.
I want a good mix of eastern front veterans and some second line infantry, even voulenteers like Blitzmädeln and Hilferins and perhaps some mechanics. I do have some sort of plan for my forces hehe.

Oh Michi, that is awsome! Hehe, I got to introduce some "secret wapons" to the allied players, I mean, its not like they dont really dislike my Köningstigers and whatnots as it is! :D

Thanks for the suggestion, but please remove the Swastika, due to the forum rules, wich are under the laws of Germany. I am aware of the fact that it might seem odd and perhaps silly, but laws are laws, and we have to respect this, its a german forum. I will report it to a moderator, not because I didnt like your post, but due to the rules, we dont want this thread locked and we dont want the owner of the forum to get any trouble.

A small update, well not so small since its 4 pieces of 60 x 120 cm boards, but its a little side project while painting miniatures and vehicles... the Stockholm part of our new Normandy table. Its in its most humble form at the moment, but the work will continue during the week.
I perhaps should add that the buildings are there for scale and such to give me some sort of idea of what kind of space the new buildings need.

Ah well, the progess have been slow, I got a bit tired of the whole Dunkelgelb business, and was a bit sidetracked with some other projects, but I think it was for the greater good. I sort of, when putting all the Tabletop World houses on the table, was dragged in to the world of fantasy and finished off another building that have been waiting for painting, hehe, but on the other side, cant be a bad thing when you actually complete something that will be used on the gaming table sooner or later.

Back to Normandy, and I have been carving out more of the trenches running next to the roads, making the ford a bit deeper and will start sanding and adding some filler today to smooth things out. I also have to make some desisions regarding the height differences, as for now, it looks way too much like removable hills, wich is not my intention at all. I just need to get my huge thumb out of the place where the sun doesnt shine and actually start shaping the hills and such, perhaps actually lowering parts of the ground as well, to get yet another dimension and illusion of a varied landscape.

Just noticed this thread.
Great looking stuff, the weathering is fantastic.
Looking forward to seeing the gaming board finished.

Trees... for a table consisting of four 60 x 120 of bocage landscape, I can tell you that you need a lot of damn trees. This was the first batch finished, two more batches to go. I dont really mind making trees, but with these amounts I get stomache ache thinking about them.

Not only trees, also alot of large hedgerows. I thought they were fun to make though. But then again, I only have 4 pieces (of 12" each). Curious about the rest of your table, Galland!

Well its slow progress with the table, I have other comitments at the moment, medieval events to attend and such, but are slowly working on it. I am trying to convince my fiancé that she needs to do all my hand sewing instead of me, but I dont think I am gaining any ground, she dont think its a fair trade... that I do the table and she makes my clothing hehe. To her defence I must say that she is also making our doughters clothing, so I am sure she have enough to sew as it is.
I all of a sudden had an urge to redesign the main layout, and wanted to add more level difference, and had to start cutting the foam, it was a larger undertaking than I had anticipated. I also managed to get some new ideas in the loop, and have decided to make the table totally non-modular. All features will be features of the table and non-removable, besides the trees, wich have sharp sticks at the bottom, something we have used before and it works very well, since you can remove them for transport or storage and re-arrange them if you need/like/want too do that.

Yes, there will be loads of hedges. However, they are very easy to make, and most of the bocage is actually not very detailed, its more of a pile of stone with dirt on top of it, and the stones very very very seldom show. With that in mind, its rather easy to re-create them. Basically xps scraps with schlam™ (sand/paint/glue mix) on top. We will start the first ground covering tomorrow, if I can get my act together and actually get the cutting done, but I think I will. I am getting some help with painting the edges and other tedious work. Its good to have minions doing my biddings in these cases. I really find painting edges booring.

Next step is to make the ground coverage that goes on top of the schlam™, and I am currently experimenting with various mixes. I am getting tired of that though, and will propably go for some sort of flock and static grass mix... unless, I can find some energy to go outside and get some stuff from the park next to our house. If I do, and get it to work satisfactory, I wil take some pics.

Hehe, well I dont have much more to show really, especially since I am primarley making/building accesories and flora stuff at the moment, like threes, brushes/shrubberies and so on. I am also experiementing with various groundcovers, like dirt and whatnots along with washes, since I dont want to go down the usuall wargaming table look, and instead will do it more like a large diorama. This takes time though, and also consumes a lot of material, and I mean a lot.

I also started to build and paint a whole new set of vehicles, wich will take some time, since I dont have the right tools at home at the moment (for photoetch stuff), so I am a bit stuck with the airbrushing, cant move on until I get the stuff that I need, but I promise to post some pics of my new Marder IIIM, Panther G, Steyr 1500A, Steyr Kommandeur Wagen that currently are in the pipe.

We are also working on another table at the moment, also with some connections to this.
