No idea why, but I've had a hankering for vikings for a while. Guess it's the spring time, saps are flowing and all that. ;D
Which would be the best rock to look under for 28 mm metal vikings?
-
I really like the Foundry line of vikings. Lots of character and enjoyable to paint, though I can't speak to their historical accuracy. The Gripping Beast vikings I've acquired have been pretty good, as well.

Personally, I think Artizan & Crusader are the best, closely followed by Gripping Beast, Black Tree & Foundry

Thanks for the pointers!
I was looking at the Crusader ones and found them nice looking and affordable. How do they scale up next to say... vintage Citadel? I'm pretty sure that if I build a warband of vikings they will square off against orcs, goblins and pirates sooner or later.

Not too bad i think, I have an old citadel adventurer that i'm about to start painting, so I will try to get you some scale shots tonight if you like?

Citadel, Foundry, and Gripping Beast, if that helps.
Buy SAGA. Totally worth it!!

& Make sure you check out the new GB Jomsvikings

That would be very kind. Thanks!
Nice unit there Chris! Since you've given up on 28mm why not just send those to me? =)

Since I bought SAGA, I'm back! :D

You might check out Old Glory.
I think their Vikings are some of their better figures.
I am finishing up a 6 point Vikking Warband with some of their figures in the units.
Hope to post photos in a few days.

Cannot beat Gripping Beast for historical accuracy.
Some other manufacturers produce fantasy versions of what the Norse looked like. I even had one miniature that had a horned helmet at one time lol.
Just being honest :)
Darrell.

I will whole-heartedly disagree w/ the endorsement of Old Glory Vikings. I bought a few bags to beef up a WAB army cheaply, got them in hand, and they were so weirdly posed, badly sculpted, and uninspiring, I sold them right off. :-[
GB yes! OG no!
And the occasional horned Viking? What the hell?! Why not?! ::) :D

I don't have any but there's Newline miniatures. The pics on the site are not very clear, but I've heard they do look nice in the flesh.

Hi Phreed
I know you said metal but I wouldn't overlook the Groping Beast platics though particularly if you are looking at a sizeable force and want a cheaper way of bulking this out. I've not tackled my Vikings yet but did get some GB plastic Vikings along with the Saxon plastics to beef out my Saxon force
Blacktree (he said holding his breath and crossing his fingers) also mix and match well and will fit with Artizan and Groping Beast, but I confined myself to only buying a unit at the time from them just in case but I had no hassle

Sorry not had chance for a picture yet but black tree have 35% off darka age stuff & free shipping over £20!

There are some lovely looking units on here. Just right to go up against the Norman army I am currently putting together. I still don't have Saga, so what with Salute only a few weeks away, I shall put my hard earned into GB's hands for a copy.

Northern Fury will also be out! so you can use some of those Normans as Bretons :D

Finally got a picture

Artizan - Crusader - Old Citadel - Foundry - Gripping Beast
Hope this helps

Finally got a picture
Thanks mate! As is obvious with your figs, as long as the basing and painting are the same there's really no glaring differences between manufacturers. I'll see what I can get on the cheap.

I love the Foundry ones. May not be the most historically accurate but they have the most character and are great sculpts.

Old Glory have two ranges of vikings though. One is terrible and one is not bad. Sounds like you got the former.
I painted some casualties for my Fantasy Norse (Jutenheim) project:
