Title: *UPDATE* Confederate infantry part 12 *UNIT FINISHED!*
Post by: General Lee on March 31, 2012, 06:38:02 PM
Since I can no longer wait on the forthcoming plastic Confederate infantry by the Perry brothers, I have decided to paint up an entirely new unit made up of the old plastic acw infantry set (the marching figs). Apparantly, you can become addicted! Renedra seriously need to expand!  :smt010 Because I am in dire need of some variation, I have also decided on using some metal figures from the Perry line. Normally, I wouldn't even consider buying metals. It is going to be a 24 man unit

In any case, here are the ingredients:

- ACW plastic infantry
- 1 pack of ACW32 Confederate infantry
- half a pack of ACW20 Confederate infantry command
- half a pack of ACW 36 Confederate infantry in frock coats
- 1 pike (to be used as a flag staff)
- Renedra plastic bases (20mm by 60mm)
- GMB banners
- assorted Vallejo/GW paints

I will get back to you on the paints.

A reliable source told me that the Confederate infantry will probably be released by the end of the year............(same goes for the British AWI infantry which I'm also looking forward to)

unfortunately yes.............they still have their Austrians and Prussian reservists, which I believe are further in the tooling process. but who knows, I think we will get more information at Salute!

It's not a Perry one, their's are steel (unless they've changed since I last bought some). That looks more like a Warlord one, although I suspect others sell them too.

Where is the metal head on the plastic guy from? Is it from the head pack?

Allright, primed and ready to go! I always use a light grey primer for my Confederates. It's a cheap can from a discount Store in the Netherlands: (Action) They only cost €2,- a can which is ridiculous, but not complaining!  ;D

I am going to paint four stands at a time (in order to ensure that I maintain some semblance of sanity)

so I have started on the uniforms. there is some debate as to how ragged Confederate infantry looked. How much variation among the men there really was. Although it is true that regiments received new unoforms from time to time (for example, before the battles of Gettysburg and Chickamauga). there is a general concensus however that as a campaign wore on, it became increasingly difficult for the Confederate army to maintain its uniformity. A lot of men received clothing from home or secured items from other sources. I also tend to go back to the paintings of Don Troiani which show a lot of different uniforms (and I also like the look of it :-D)

I have varied between different shades of grey and khaki (which you can use as butternut) some of the colors are:

Vallejo Model color:
- Khaki
- US Field Drab
- Green brown
- English uniform
- neutral grey
- light grey
- German Grey

Vallejo Game Color
- khaki (very different shade than the model color one)

GW
- commando khaki

Cheers! I'm going to dip them with Army Painter Dark Tone. If I didn't have the dip, I would not be able to finish my units so quickly  ;D

that's always the problem right, lack of time! There so many other things I would also like to do. What is your main project?

Just finished mine and I am going to apply the matte finish.

I save time by skipping the intense detail of the blanket roll, I know they look great with this detail on them, but "oh well". :D

Do you literally dip yours or do you brush the dip on.....looking good, I cant belive sometimes what the dip does for the figures.

I brush it on. I never really understood the need of literally dipping them into a can, it's such a messy business. But yeah, it works so well. you get great results very quickly (I just don't have the time or patience to paint them in the traditional manner)

Well that is pretty damn awesome!

It would appear that dry brushing a bit reaps a significant enhancement of the resulting dip.
Title: Re: painting ACW Confederate infantry, a blog: part 9 *varnish*
Post by: General Lee on April 05, 2012, 05:46:47 PM
So, let's talk varnish. I think it is fair to say that everyone has his or her own method. It took me a while to figure out what worked best on dipped figures. I started out with a spray can, but that made a mess (cracks, and often a white milky trace)

So no spray cans for me. I used to have a small bottle of testors varnish, the acrylic version, but I found out that they do not produce it anymore. So I was left with Testors Dullcote (Model Master), the enamel one. Not a fan of enamel, it stinks up the place, but I gave it a go. And you know what? if you want a 100% matt finish, this is the one to go for.

Unfortunately, darker colors become foggy, this is especially noticable on ACW northern troops with their dark blue uniforms. I fixed this by giving my figures a second coat of varnish, namely, Vallejo matt varnish

So, two coats of varnish. The first by Model Master, to completely negate the glossy finish of the dip, and a second coat of Vallejo varnish, to counteract the fogginess. You may ask, "why not one coat of Vallejo varnish?" Well I've tried, and it is simply not strong enough to negate the gloss effect of the dip. anyway, here are two pictures. the first, after the first coating, and then one with the second coating of varnish
