Hey guys,
I just started on the head of a Calot. I feel something is off about the face. You guys care to help me figure it out?

This is basically the face I was shooting for:

Thanks,

I dunno Dan, it looks pretty good to me.
:-*
PS: I want one.

Looks good to me too, I could see what it was straight away, even though the name didn't ring a bell at first (I am bad at remembering names and such)
-
It seems perfect and I wish I could sculpt like you do.
-
Looks great to me. In the picture the mouth is open, showing off the teeth more & suggesting a subtle smile. Just a slightly different expression from the sculpt.
-
I was going to critique the long legs, but this is early days on the lower body. lol
The head looks bang on to me; we usually see it looking up, mind you, and the jaw agape. Also, don't think the eyeballs need the pits, as the pupil would probably be best painted in.
Edit: Whoops, sorry, General. You beat me to part of that...
Now, getting to indescribably cute is the really tough part, and probably also requires that coat of paint...

The only thing that I could see that may give you that "off" feeling is the mouth on the cgi goes much further back into the skull, more like a hinge. Even then, yours looks great as is.
-
Big B,
Do you mean the back of the jaw or the front of the mouth?
Thanks!
Dan

back of the jaw. The cgi seems to go back further in the head. Easily solved with a dark line when painting though. No biggie. It really does look good, CC

Tonight it started to look more like Bandit, from Jonny Quest:

I definitely do NOT want it to look like an Earth dog! So I think I would be safer to try to maintain the "salamander" or "frog" characteristics described by ERB and also ishown in poster from the latest JCM film:

That means I had to change the eyes to allow space for the distinctive nose. I've made the eyes smaller and a little wider apart (not by much). And, since the jaw isn't really open all the way, I've also simplified the corners of the mouth and softened the curvature of the upper lip.
I hope to have pics taken tomorrow, so you guys can steer me in the right direction as you have so far.
Thanks a million!

Actually, the more I look at the sculpt the more I can see more of a canine look to it. Compared to the pics there is something Bulldog-ish happening.
It still looks great though. Maybe leave off the face and concentrate on the body. Then re-try the face and it may fall into place a bit easier when you have the rest of the creature for comparison.

STAGE 2 OF MY CALOT
I took and posted another set of 5 pictures on my Flickr account. Here's one of them:

The first of the five starts here:

At Stage 2 of the project, the face is just about finished. In a couple of days I will begin work on the lower set of legs, then the outer set and, finally the body. But I can only work a little at a time for now, until my fingers stop cramping and trembling. It's getting better each day since the surgeries, and I couldn't wait to play with putty again.
Please let me know what you think of the finished face!
For the face I tried to make it look more like the one here, which looks a lot like a salamander. I hope I succeeded a little in capturing the essence of the face on this critter:

Thanks,

Ahhh... That's a better pic.
The face you've sculpted is similar to the poster but a bit different too. Overall, it works so I wouldn't be overly worried.
The only thing I'd really think about changing is the divets in the eyes. I think it would be better to fill them in and maybe give him some eyelids to "fit" the eyeballs into the head a bit better.
Cheers,
IanKH

Guys,
Stage 3 (last 5 photos showing up now): Face definitely complete. Filled out the legs more and underbelly. The "belly" legs are NOT done by any means. Added limits of where the skin flaps will cover.
