Title: Superhero project (updated 10/05/2013)
Post by: Christian on 25 April 2012, 11:17:18 AM
Hi everyone, here is the start of my super hero project, which I'm putting together with my wife - Painting Princess. She will be posting here too.

Anyway, we had a go at the Super System rules and think they're pretty cool. So we're making an urban board and duking it out comic-book style.

So, I've started with a couple of figures... first, one you've already seen (still not finished!), The Incredible Bulk:

And I've also started a small group of elite enforcers, think S.H.I.E.L.D., from West Wind's SWAT team. I'm going to have them lead by Matakishi's African Warlord with some modifications...

I've added an eye-patch and a collared shirt with tie to make him look a little bit more respectable!

So, keep your eyes peeled, true believers!

That's right, Supercity is on the way! Lame name, I know ... oh well, it's a work in progress. We'll see what we can come up with later on.

Anyway, back to more important things. Here's a plan of what our urban board may look like:

The spot next to the News building may be a cafe and the "tall building" down the bottom may become a basketball court ... not sure yet.

Any thoughts?

Looks like a good layout, with my own city (see my SSUA thread) I'm aiming for buildings that are usable in multiple periods and games.

I spent a bit of time wandering the inner suburbs of Melbourne looking at how sub-urban areas are laid out.

Thanks Hat Guy, will take a look at your project.

Was in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago and they make good work of blending buildings from different eras together.

Will have to think about how a retro comic book-y style board could  be reused ...

Maybe something that would work with a Pulp/Gangster setting.......

Yep, me too. There are many heavyweights in the superhero world, but never quite enough overweights* :P

*) Heck they had to count Night Owl (II) as fat in one list - for being a little soft in the middle!

Interesting idea. That might work with a .45 Adventures game, if we could find some retro minis to go with it ... We've got some pulp miniatures, but they look a little older than the 60s, maybe 20s/30s. Something to think about!

We were thinking of having it retro style but more like in Futurama where it's the future and most of the buildings are relics from the 90s (except, obviously, our relics would be from the 60s!), but then there are some buildings that are totally futuristic with funny antennae on sticking out of them ...

I'm not sure if we discarded that idea or what, but I did like the idea of retro Futurama, with hover cars! Just paid for them today, so hopefully the postie will be dropping them off in the next week or so!

Some food for thought on the Futurama-ish idea:

I want a pizza place that looks sort of like this, except maybe a bit more friendly-looking ... next to a comic book shop!

Hi all,

Well, it's been quite a while, but we're back with Supercity!! Alas, our urban-retro-futuristic table has not really made any progress, but we have some renewed excitement in the characters themselves. We're hoping to play a game of SuperSystem soon, so I've come up with my first super heroine!

This is Nebula, the super version of her alter-ego Professor Ariel Sheratan. No stats yet, but I have a character profile in draft, so stay tuned!

The base was put together by Christian. Enjoy!

I like the design. I am going with a simple concept, that like yours can go into other games. I was going to do a gas station, strip mall, parking lot, park, (maybe) zoo, construction site, junkyard, warehouse/storage area with containers and a graveyard...kicking around the idea of a bank or museum also.

some very good stuff. Which figure did you use for the Bulk? I am tempted to copy you excellent work.

Also, I love the black and white star pattern on you heroine. inspired.

It is from Moongooe Publishing Judge Dread Line. They make a cool few other figs like the Pyro girl...

These all look fantastic. Are either of you planning to make it to Little Wars Melbourne in May? I'll be running my Supers Table and I'd be glad to scrape off the brand name heroes to slap some of our homebrew ones down.

Thanks Mason!!

Styx: feel free to pinch it! ;) Your table plan sounds good too ... I was tossing up the idea of a construction site too after I made my drawing - it would provide some interesting terrain for gaming scenarios! I think Christian bought a power plant or something, though, which might also make its way onto the table once we really put some effort into building it!

Thanks!

As styx pointed out, Christian did indeed use a Mongoose figure for The Incredible Bulk - it's "Fattie":

I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you used the idea :)

Nebula is "Torrent" from Reaper Miniatures:

Would be great to play our heroes on your awesome table! Not sure if we'll be able to get down to Melbourne this year; we've got a great big holiday later this year ... we'll see!

I feel like I need to get my wife to move to Australia...all of the best gaming that I love is down under! Super Heroes, Bolt Action, Blood Bowl and 40k to name a few!

I looked at the fattie but you really put that to life. I may get the pryo from that line as the flaming hands is very sweet!

Hey, this thread looks pretty nice so far!
There are some buildings or scenery for zombie/post-apoc games that might fit in your project. I'm no sure if there's anything about the Futurama designs... But I encourage you to create it! ;)

Welcome to Supercity, Suber! Yes, we will probably have to scratch build or convert some buildings to get a Futurama look ... We'll see how we go with the era for that board ...

Not sure about using post-Apoc for Supercity, as I want it to look like a comic book style city, but we're also planning a board for Atomic Cafe that will have that sort of retro/post-Apoc look. Any suggestions on where to look for PA buildings? We've got a couple of diners etc that we'll do some work on for it, but that's only two or three buildings!

Thanks Badger! I "highlighted" the black with some more black mixed with a dash of purple, then I watered down some White Scar a little bit, loaded some onto a wash brush and flicked it gently onto the mini (just flicking the tip of the brush, not the whole thing). I covered the base and hair with tissue to avoid getting the specks on there.

The key was to do it gently and with not too much paint to achieve a sparser look, with dots instead of the streaks that you'd get if the brush was too close to the mini or used too much paint :)

Thanks for the tip. I thought it couldn't be done that way as I have always done that with a loaded brush and blood for zombies / arterial spray and you get dots and streaks. Really well done, that is very effective

I have been working on some character cards for our game... based on the version carlosyc did on the web, I went and spent some time on Photoshop and came up with this:

Still a bit of a draft version, but the actual stats will go over the watermarked text.

I've also painted two of the newly formed Holistic Enforcement and Logistics Mandate (H.E.L.M.), but I haven't got pics yet :)

So, I'm finally happy with Nebula's back-story! Here's a teaser:

NEBULA
(http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w414/Painting_Princess/Supercity/0dbd00596eb2505c307a7c8bd46a482d.jpg)

Professor Ariel Sheratan, a research astronomer, had been researching the practical applications of stellar energy as a power source aboard the privately-owned Next Element Space Station (N.E.S.S.). Her hypothesis was that the energy possessed by stars could rival the efficiency of nuclear power as an energy source, if it could somehow be harnessed.

In order to more closely study this stellar energy, Professor Sheratan built a one-of-a-kind telescope (the Nebulous Starscope 1.0) designed to analyse the spectra of light observed in outer space. While observing stars aboard the N.E.S.S., Professor Sheratan witnessed a supernova explosion through her telescope—an explosion so blinding that she was knocked unconscious ...

How do you modifie the atributes? with microsoft word? with paint i think it would be a little slow work
Iniciative, BP and AP son´t have space to punt a number a continue viewing the words

Thanks, carlosyc.

I guess you've got the option to use word, or a more advanced picture editor than Paint. I've made the text watermarked so you can type, write or draw over it.

I guess what would be good is an editable PDF or something? I wouldn't know where to start :) Good luck, though. Let me know how it goes and if there's any improvements to be made. I'm yet to test them out, my self.
