WARNING: Unpainted Miniatures Included!
This year at Horisont we have agreed that it will be time to bring back VSF once more. This time we will do an alternative Rorke's Drift, where the Zulus have been eaten by Arachnids and now Roke's Drift is overrun by Arachnids instead.
For this project we will be using a modded form of Starship Troopers/Battlefield Evolution rules, aproximately 100 Brits and 200 Arachnids.
These pics are from our first playtest and at this point we still need to figure out how we will do this, what victory conditions we want, stats and special rules for vehicles and character + tons more.
We played the game for 6 rounds and it took us almost 5 hours, so we need to streamline it all and have some straight guide lines to follow.
The goal is to let 2 playes join on each side and hopefully get the game to finish in 2-2½ hours time. So it will probably only be run a few times during Horisont.
But enough of that, here is the pictures of the first chaotic playtest:

The British camp, defended by 60 riflemen, 2 cannons, 1 gatling gun, 2 steam tanks, a scout aeronef, 3 walking bombs and some random hearos.

The Arachnid horde approaches.

100 Arachnids quickly advancing. (Killed Arachnids would form new units and re-enter as the game progressed).

Steamdriven dropships send reinforcment to the British, they try to get the Brainbug.

But fail.
Lot of dead bugs so far.

Arachnids try to destroy the walking bomb before it detonates.

Tanker bug emerges and spews forth acid and kills lot of Brits.

Some readcoats is getting close up confrontation from the bugs.
Some more reinforcement arrives and dies only slightly slowing down the Arachnid hordes.

The Royal Mail Rifle Corps is getting tough Arachnid love.

Some shooty bugs trying their best to beet the Martini Henry rifles, but with little luck.
The camp is getting overrun.
In the end only a handful of Brits survived.
The camp was evacuated and Zululand is now ruled by Arachnids.
I think there were no real winners, in the end more than 100 bugs had died, actually only 6 of the first wave bugs had survived. But the Brits also suffered heavy losses, only one unit was left nearly intact, the rest was wiped out only had 1 or 2 models left.
A fun game, I only wish I hadn't been so tired during the game, but we got the system and idea tested and we will deffinately work on to get this game running.

:-*
Wow... looks fun!
Now I know why I have also been buying bugs... ;)
-
Yeah, who needs Zulus when you can have Arachnid bugs do the job much better ;D
-
Lovely VSF madness at it best. :-* :-* :-*
Great idea to use the bugs
-
Yes a very fine test of our new rules! lol
Not knowing what was up or down in them had us just trying everything out for size at once.
Several variations on martini rifles were tried but in the end lowering the target value of the bugs seems to be our next try out.
We even discussed having a "get the artillery" scenario running next to this one with British or French troops trying to take out 5 plasma bugs. ;D
Oh well I have some 100 more warriors bugs I need to assemble. ::)
-
That looks fun 8)
I like the giraffe mixed in with the bugs you crazy Viking lol
cheers
James
-
The giraffe was an unlucky and unwilling participant, it tried to run from the bugs but got eaten by the horde.
-
Great idea and execution but how dare you, warning or not, post unpainted figures? I bet it was that Doctor Horny Helmets fault
-
Great VSF fun! Loads of eye candy.
The Royal Mail Rifles lol More details on this unit please.

I will have to say that I did not know we were going to post this at the LAF... It is entirely Jonas' at discretion. lol
But I share his eagerness to share our project. Although I already have a dedicated thread from last year when I was trying to do it on my own. lol

I think the blue table subtracts quite a bit from whatever candy moments you would find in the photos. ;D
But I think that when we're done and everything is set up it will look rather splendid.

What a great idea! :o

WARNING: Unpainted Miniatures Included!
You are forgiven! Great miniatures. It looked like a fun playtest. :-*
The giraffe was an unlucky and unwilling participant, it tried to run from the bugs but got eaten by the horde.
I thought that was the evil doctor giraffe who was in charge of the invading bug horde! lol
You have to admit, you and Dr. The Viking have come up with crazier ideas! ;D
-

Don't give him ideas.. ;)
-
Bloody great eye-candy!
Looked like great fun, and yet more great VSF inspiration.
Love it!

Looks like a really fun game.
By the by, who makes the hulk-like figure in the bottom right of the last photo? Looks like a clix to me, but can't place it.

It's some kind superhero clix figure that I put a pith helmet on. :D
Sorry I can't be more of use with regards to exact naming...

The unpainted minis are a forgiveable oversight, but that china blue table... ! Even a sheet of brown paper would have done.
It's okay Lieutenant, all is forgiven this time, due to an excellent and hilarious batrep which will be mentioned in the next despatch. But you're on watch, mind! Don't let it happen again, there's a good chappie. ;)

Everybody knows that the British painted the earth blue in all their colonies, so it would be easy to destinguish their land from space.
Sigh, some of you VSF nuts should read up on the historic parts too ;)
-
No, the British painted theirs red, as you can see on any map of the world printed in Britain before 1955. The French painted theirs blue. I can only assume that the dastardly French had come along and tried to pretend that was their land under our soldiers.
Gorgeous game, looks like it was great fun, and I think we have to forgive the unpainted minis and naked table, for starters because it was just a test-run, and secondly because you did it with such great style.

Those walking bombs are an excellent idea! Where did they come from? that way I can steal them more easily!
My mad Scientist, Herr Doktor Professor Otto Maton, makes all sorts of mechanickal marvels. One item in his arsenal is a unit of steam spiders that can act as limpet mines against armoured vehicles. Not as devastating as those walking bombs against infantry groups, though.
-
The bombs are made from some Super Mario Candy. They are made by Dr The Viking, I think he bought them in Germany.

Strong Guy!
Fantastic looking game and a wonderful concept.

This is giving me ideas ;)
-
Well you want a good hoard xenomorph, who better than the Arachnids? Really lovely - the walking bombs are top notch.
-
Thanks Jonas. I'll see what google-fu and ebay-itsu can dig up for me.

Great and fun looking game!!!!!
