Title: The Terror of Shindig Sandbar by Nameless Design miniatures
Post by: Alxbates on 02 May 2012, 03:50:08 PM
I finally finished painting the Terror of Shindig Sandbar from Nameless Design Miniatures:

I love this miniature; it was a real joy to paint.  I think it perfectly captures the look of a "man in a rubber monster suit" - and the sculptor (Brian Roe) even sells it with the option of getting a zipper on the back!

The casting was sharp and clean and didn't need much prep work. The head in particular is easy to paint - details have just the right depth to hold washes and take highlights.

The body has a few pockmarks between the scales - after I did an initial green wash over the figure, I had to go back with a fine brush and touch the pockets with wash to get paint in there, but it's a minor gripe.  The scales on the body left me a little stymied;  I wanted to do something with them that was more than "three layers of green!", but I didn't feel like painting each scale individually, so I did a couple of layers of drybrushing and left it at that.  C+C here would be appreciated, I feel like I should have done more with the body, but I'm not sure what.

It's a great miniature - perfect for light-hearted horror or 1950's sci-fi games, even superhero games.

Thanks for looking,

Very effective paint scheme, almost a B Movie charicature of a monster.

If I remember rightly, it is based on a real B movie.  Good painting, there, Alxbates.  Purple and green: classic comic book villain secondary colours!

Correct - it's inspired by this classic drive-in flick:

Thanks for the kind words!

Great job Mr. Bates! I love seeing how other folks paint these minis. And I'm really looking forward to seeing your take on the Elder Things.

Now I've got to finish those Basti wardancers...

Fun miniature and a nice paintjob.  :-*

I seem to remember the monster from the movie looked like it had a bunch of hotdogs stuck in its mouth though.  lol

Teeth was probably a better decision.

I just realised that Khurusan does the same monster in 15mm: http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/planet15.html (http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/planet15.html) (near the bottom).  You could do Pa Terror and the kids!

Now I just need "warbands" of surfer-dudes and surfettes, and the "Wild Bunch" wanna-bes like "Erich von Zipper" from those Frankie Avalon-Annette Funicello movies I used to watch on UHF on Saturday afternoons...

Any miniatures recommendations, especially surfettes in appropriately demure 1950s swim-wear?

Reaper's Chronoscope Range has a surfer dude, I think.

I had no idea that they were doing these! They've got some great figures in this line. Good to see someone else inspired by cheesy movies. I guess great minds think alike. ;D

Man... I had no idea those figures existed, either.

I really like that idea - the Terror and his (her?) spawnlings!

I assure you the creature is all male. The movie has a "panty raid" scene.  lol

Again quoting MST3K: Crow: "Every male of any species has the biological urge to panty raid."

I love the 'zipper back' option on this figure. It could be useful for chasing around a bunch of nosy kids and their dog....
