I watched 'The Twilight Samurai' the other day (very good film) and was inspired to make a lower class samurai house similar to one featured in the film.
I usually try and get stuff done before posting but this is probably going to be long term as I'm making the interior as well as taking time on the exterior.
The main house construction is done along with the main external timbering. The main roof will be a hipped thatch and the projecting roof will be wooden with a gable. I'm even toying with the idea of lighting it using yellow LEDs kept in the roof.
The windows and doors will be typical shoji (paper) and these will allow the light to come through :)

The house is on a slight rise as it will be near a river and this would help to prevent flooding.
More to follow in the coming weeks and if all goes well ill make a middle class samurai home and who knows, maybe even a rich one :)

It looks very delicate, Jim. But in a good way.
What will make it a low ranking samurai's house? Is that restricted to size, decoration?
I'm intrigued!
-
Great start to the house Jim.
Is the Twilight samurai movie the one where his wife has died and he looks after the kids?He also has a fight using a wooden sword if I remember correctly.Good film if it is the one I am thinking of.Watched it years ago.
After watching Thirteen Assassins I would love to do a village set-up like in the movie.
-
Thanks chaps :)
Christian, all samurai that belonged to a clan had a stipend of a certain amount, referred to as koku (one koku was a value that was determined by the amount of rice that would keep one man for a year). It generally wasn't literal but was only a way of determining a value etc. this house is for a 40-60 koku samurai.
Manic, that is the same film :) 'The Thirteen Assasins' is quite enjoyable but the village at the end has a slight touch of whimsy to it and probably isn't 100% historically accurate although all the basic elements are right.

Looking SWEET!

Really liking this.

Weird I just watched that film last week as well.
Good start to the build.
-
It's quite good isn't it Colin :)
I'll have an update tomorrow as I'm at work today sorting out the tatami and shoji and bamboo fencing.

Nice 'clean' start! Any time I do anything I need to cover it polyfilla and green stuff to hide mistakes, but yours are always soo precise!
-
Looking good, James! Just the residence for Ono Onomoro I would have thought... ;)

Was going to say the same thing, what materials do you use? is it foamed PVC?
-
so far so good!
I look forward to see more.
-
Nice to see how it goes together ;)
-
Really nice one, Jimbo!
I for one is absolute shit when it comes to construct buildings, so I'd love a very thourough step-by-step-guide ;)
-
I saw the Twilight Samurai a few years ago. It was a great movie.
Your building is really doing the film justice. :-*
Great work.
-
Thanks very much gents :)

It's all mounting card (the type used by picture framers) that's 1.5mm thick. It seems the right thickness for most work, sturdy and yet not overly outsized.
I was hoping to get the tatami done yesterday but something went wrong with the transfer between Autocad, Coral Draw and Trotec :-[ I think I know where the problem lies so I'll have another go this week. Got the shoji frames done though, got to stick the paper on yet...

I'm just sitting here digging it - and trying to suck up information.
What are those shoji frames? They're perfect!
Do they slide? ;)
(Pst! It's the 20.5.12 today! ;))

You know, I'm jealous for your resources - roof tile mould, laser cut shoji... ;)
Where do you get laser cut shoji? Custom ordered?
-
Beautiful work there Jim! :-*

Well, it's taken long enough to get a bit more done on this but it's progressing :)
The woodwork, basic groundwork and wall panels are done all in pretty much the same way as I do all my Japanese terrain and there is a more detailed write up on my blog (link below).
The shoji had thin paper applied to them with very thin superglue and will probably need a coat of matt varnish. The woodwork had three higlight drybrushes as opposed to the normal two. I will also be highlighting the shoji frames as they look a little flat.
Still a fair amount to do and I'm changing the roof from thatch to tile as I'm not happy with the thatch experiments I've done so far :? I'm also not there with the tatami yet but I'm not far off.
Anyway, some pictures :D

Splendid! :-*
I do wish that you did a tutorial sometime. So I can start my samurai project :)
-
Very nice! Definitely feels like the Twilight Samurai!
-
Looks almost better than my own flat. :o Then again I'd be an ashigaru at best...
Well done, looking forward to the final steps.
-
Thanks chaps :)

I'm afraid I barely have time for the rambling rubbish I post on my blog and here let alone doing a full blown tutorial. Maybe one day, if I'm incapacitated from the waist down or something :)

Well, you could break a foot (or something smaller even, like a toe, that doesn't really hurt that much) in about one and a half year. Need to do some samurai stuff for Gubbspel Galore V then you see... ;)
And if that fails, at least tell me how to do those nice japanese bambooesque roof tiles :) And you don't have to wait one and a half year for that reply by the way.
-
That looks lovely James :)

It does look rather splendid, but hasn't Tobi made a similar one already ??? ;)
-
That's looking wonderful. As ever you creations are at once inspiring and yet depressing for those of us with more modest talents. I look forward to seeing the finished article.
-
Looking great so far!
-
I'm impressed by the paper effect on the windows: any more details about it? It seems that you put the frame on bot sides!
-
Splendid indeed! :-*
-
Thanks again chaps, if I'm not working Sunday I'll be doing a bit more (roof hopefully :) ).

In the next post I'll deal with both in more detail if I can :)
